Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: Quotes

Straight from my tattered copy of Inferno:

"Abandon all hope ye who enter here."

I was more fond of the last line in Bolgia 5:

"and he had made a trumpet of his ass."

And Botticelli(sp.?)'s accompanying illustration was quite funny, too. :-)

Re: Quotes

Ah, the divine comedy!  Such sinister door carvings, yes?

Canto III (original, Petrocchi text.)

“Per me si va ne la cittą dolente,
per me si va ne l'etterno dolore,
per me si va tra la perduta gente.
Giustizia mosse il mio alto fattore:
fecemi la divina podestate,
la somma sapienza e 'l primo amore.
Dinanzi a me non fuor cose create
se non etterne, e io etterno duro.
Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate".

--Dante Alighieri (1265-1321)

Canto III (English Translation)

"Through me the way is to the city dolent;
  Through me the way is to eternal dole;
Through me the way among the people lost.
Justice incited my sublime Creator;
  Created me divine Omnipotence,
The highest Wisdom and the primal Love.
Before me there were no created things,
Only eterne, and I eternal last.
All hope abandon, ye who enter in!"

--Trans. (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Canto III (English Translation)

Through me the way into the suffering city,
Through me the way to the eternal pain,
Through me the way that runs among the lost.
Justice urged on my high artificer;
  My maker was divine authority,
The highest wisdom, and the primal love.
Before me nothing but eternal things
Were made, and I endure eternally.
Abandon every hope, who enter here.

--Trans. (Alan Mandelbaum)

*sigh* well, i had always heard it that way myself. i wonder why the fuss in [b]tam lin then??

ah, maybe it just depends on the translator? this is fr.
the annotated dean:

page 51, lines 31-32
"..."Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." It always irritated Janet. "All hope abandon," she muttered."
Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy, Inferno, canto III, line 9.
"All hope abandon, ye who enter here!"
traditional translation of "Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate."

hey happy tell me your story
hey happy give me your name
why have you been sitting there all quiet and shy
have i not been listening?

Re: Quotes

My translation is by John Ciardi:

"I am the way into the city of woe
I am the way to a forsaken people
I am the way into eternal sorrow

Sacred justice moved my architect
I was raised here by divine omnipotence
Primordial love and ultimate intellect

Only those elements time cannot wear
Were made before me, and beyond time I stand
Abandon all hope ye who enter here."

Yield to temptation; it may not pass your way again.

Re: Quotes

What a lot of excellent quotes. I have a terrible memory for quotations, but here are two that have stuck in my mind for years:

"and death i think is no parenthesis" e. e. cummings

"And I have seen the Eternal Footman hold my coat and snicker. And in short, I was afraid." T. E. Eliot

Re: Quotes

I have a bunch of darker ones (as opposed to lighter and funny)saved in my writing notebook.

Thy dewy looks sink in my breast,
Thy gentle words stir poisen there;
Thou hast disturbed the only rest
That was the portion of despair!
Subdued to Duty's hard control,
I could have borne my wayward lot:
The chains that bind this ruined soul
Had cankered then- but crushed it not.

Re: Quotes

re:  Books of Magic stuff.  Posted this before realizing that there was a page 2 to this thread

I believe that comic series is by Neil Gaiman, who's name has appeared on these forums before.  When I got rid of my comic collection, the one series I kept was the Books of Magic.  Some of Gaiman's best work there, very reminiscent of early sandman.

Re: Quotes

W.C. Fields once went missing from the set of one of his films during shooting and Jack Warner, head of Warner Bros., sent a messenger to search for him. Having tried every club in the city, the messenger finally found him relaxing in a quiet bar in Brooklyn. Showing W. C. Fields the bag of golf clubs he was carrying, the messenger said that Jack Warner had invited him to play a round of golf. To which W. C. Fields replied: "Tell him if I wanted to play with a prick, I'd play with my own."

Re: Quotes

About the Dante quotations - love 'em all, but I always go with my own translation, pieced together from what I think are the best bits from all the others.

"Through me is the way to the city of sorrow,
Through me is the way to suffering eternal,
Through me is the way to the lost
...
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!"

I know the ending is supposed to be 'All hope abandon', but I greatly prefer the rhythm on this version.  Rhythm seldom survives the translation from one language to another, so we have to make do.

Re: Quotes

Another quote:

"Assiduus usus uni rei deditus et ingenium et artem saepe vincit."

Latin (trans.) Constant practice devoted to one subject often outdoes both intelligence and skill.

Methinks I have that right.

Re: Quotes

Some random quotes:

-They call a ship "she" because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder. - Admiral Nimitz

-"Sure there's a catch, Catch-22.  Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy." - Joseph Heller

-All animals are equal - but some are more equal than others. - George Orwell

Can't think of any others right now.  It's getting late.
