Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

QM - Splash!

It's been getting stiffling hot in the Mad Office, and as you sit there, gasping for air, you dream of fresh air and cool, refreshing water.
Finally, you decide to leave. You open the door and step outside, taking a deep breath of the cooler, cleaner air - and suddenly, you are falling, falling, until -
*SPLASH*
you land in deep, pleasantly cool water.
Bobbing back to the surface, you find yourself in a lake. Clear blue sky stretches between the wooded hills that surround it, and all around you drift air matresses, tires, pool noodles and inflatable animals with Smarchers clinging to them, and rubber boats filled with drinks, glasses, snacks and extra-waterproof sunscreen.

So grab something to float on, and let's spend the summer where it is best spent - in the lake!

Re: QM - Splash!

Our printer at work is f***ing retarded.

It's slow at everything. Duplexing takes forever, but I'd rather not waste the paper.
We buy cheap toner for it, which is not the printer's fault, but it's still cheap toner that comes off if you rub it too hard (no joke, and it isn't even that hard) and the cartridges are only good for ~3000 pages.
But today took the cake! So this past week, I discovered that when you tell it to print more than 1 copy, it does not automatically collate the pages, this goes for duplex printing, too. Luckily, I've only been printing 2 copies of 3-4 pages, so it wasn't a huge deal. I thought I out-smarted it today, and checked the "collate" box. Well, it showed me up! I was trying to print 2 copies of a 3 page document, duplexed. I got: First paper containing pg 1 & pg 2, Second paper containing pg 3 & pg 1, Third paper containing pg 2 & pg 3. REALLY????????? *goes Office Space on the printer*

Re: QM - Splash!

That's really quite weird!

My first printer was quite strange as well, but at least it printed the pages in proper order. It did crumple the paper, tear the paper, print text in green, in pink or in rainbow colours, with uneven margins, it did constantly complain it was out of paper even when it wasn't - but at least it printed in the proper order!

Re: QM - Splash!

I had a personal printer that had really crappy drivers, so it wouldn't print half the time until I did the uninstall/reinstall tango... but that was about the worst.

The kicker? This is supposedly "better" than one we just got rid of. (I and everyone else who actually uses it disagrees, but big boss who bought all the printers must've gotten some kind of deal. He also sits next to our big multi-function office printer, and anytime you print more than 10 pages on it (because you want it done sometime today), he runs over and stops the process because you "must've accidentally sent it over." Try and logic through why we rent this big beast of a printer but can't use it for big print jobs...)

Re: QM - Splash!

Yeah, newer isn't always better. There was one thing to be said for that old printer: It printed until it was really, truly, out of ink. Sure, it beeped some time and a window saying, "Printer is out of ink" popped up, but you could click "ignore", and it just kept on printing. Even when it could only print in pale pink any more, it kept on printing.
Those newer printers? "Beep, I'm out of ink", and they're not doing anything any more! Even if only one of the colour cartridges is empty (and there's probably still a bit left in it anyway), and you only want to print black and white, they won't do anything.
Also, when the old one broke, or something got stuck in it, I could take it apart and try to fix it. Those new ones? Forget it. My current one has a chocolate egg stuck in it, and I can't get it out!

Sleep well, Sahi!

I'm waiting for my last load of laundry before I can go to bed. Then I will finally have conquered Mount Laundry!

Just wrote a somewhat rant-y blog post about all the thing I wish I could say to stupid customers. It feels strangely cathartic - now I just have to hope I don't accidentally say one of these things out loud the next time someone annoys me.

Re: QM - Splash!

I found some blackberries today - they're absolutely delicious! Sadly, they're so incredibly thorny I can only get a few from the edge of the thicket, no way I could lean in more closely (especially since I was only wearing shorts, a T-shirt and sandals).

Re: QM - Splash!

Busy day so far today at work! Mailing lots of bills, charging credit cards, faxing invoices... Oh and going on a hunt for printer paper (since apparently the person who took the last bit of paper didn't tell anyone or bother going to get more...lazy ppl)

Gotta do some last minute cleaning tonight, fiancee's friend is coming into town tomorrow for a few days which will be fun. I forsee lots of coffee, hookah, and bbq'ing, as long as the weather stays nice, which it looks like it will!

Also, I should've learned by now... I should not place book orders through work, because everyday I come in and hope 'Is it here yet?' And it never is, because it usually takes a week or two for orders to come in, unless we ask them to rush it. I am not a patient person...

Re: QM - Splash!

Looking after my brother today. And of course I got some extra tasks, such as putting stuff on my mother's new mp3 player. Yes, like I don't have anything else to do!

Today, we actually had a busy day at work - a rare thing in summer. But today, not one, but two deliveries of chrysanthemum plants arrived, the cutflower and the ones for pots, so they all needed to be potted up or planted as quickly as possible.

*phew* So they decided to ship a lot of stuff out today... ~50 invoices, all to one billing dept! (We participate in this online ordering program for the air force... people on the bases can order online and if it's a product we have, the air force's system sends the order to us.) wheeeeee

And I was productive... I scheduled my wedding rehearsal, and booked us for tastings!

Re: QM - Splash!

I'm feeling very frustrated - the files my mother wants to have on her mp3 player are in a different format, which is why they wouldn't play when she put them on the player, and I wasted most of my evening on trying to solve the problem, but all the converters I tried either aren't working or are so slow that it would take about five million years to convert everything.

Re: QM - Splash!

Ick, that sucks, Magpie! Maybe you could set up one of the converters to do all the songs you want, but set it to run overnight?

Re: QM - Splash!

I suppose I'll have to. And I'll have to do it on my computer because hers is so noisy.

But I already told her she'll have to wait until next week - I simply have too many other things to do, and I already wasted an entire evening on this.

Phew. Tired. Extra long work out today, as friend is coming into town tonight and we didn't want to abandon him for ~2 hrs on Friday :P Not that he would be awake or untrustworthy, but fiancee didn't want to be a "poor host" I guess.

Re: QM - Splash!

Another day of not getting anything done. I was at my mother's place again, celebrating my other brother's birthday.
The youngest turned 18 last week, and today he finally got our "traditional" 18th-birthday present (our father decided to send it by mail because his plans to come visit didn't work out - not his fault for once).
Back before I was born, my father told my mother, "If we ever have children, the day they turn 18, they'll get 500 schillings, and then we'll kick them out!"
Then, 500 schillings might have been a lot of money - now they'd barely pay three day's rent (and my apartment is pretty cheap)! And who would have guessed that by the time the oldest (me) turned 18, we'd have a different currency?
Luckily, our father planned ahead and bought three silver 500 schilling coins - when I got mine, my youngest brother told him he'd better have one for his 18th birthday as well, but by now, he'd totally forgotten about it, so it came as a nice surprise!

*carefully treads into the mint*

No water for me please, too much of it around me already!!

Well I've had a fantastic weekend with Sahi..... ended up getting locked up in the park, having to climb a fence to get out, played music in the park and had a pick-nick.... and we chatted and chatted anc chatted....

And now I'm soooo ready for my trip to the Netherlands... I just can't focus at work anymore... bought a new skirt and a shrug for Castlefest, and all I can do is think about Castlefest... I'm tired of work, think it
s probably also the weather... but boy, I just need a break!!
