Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Prometheus

You know... I'm kinda shocked we don't have a Prometheus thread here yet.

I liked it... though it was deeply flawed.  I think I could have bought the high concepts that Ridley Scott was trying to introduce if the characters didn't act like buffoons all the time.  Taking your helmet off in an alien environment that could be teeming with parasites?  Really?  Shouldn't we have at least introduced a scene where they're running out of oxygen, and they have no oxygen but to remove their helmets?

Ridley Scott, though, does seem like the kind of director whose "Director's Cut" versions seems to be way better than the originals (Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven).  So I'm actually kinda curious to see what scenes were deleted from this movie to get the running time down.

Re: Prometheus

Saw it and hated it. I was completely bored out of my mind.

Re: Prometheus

I enjoyed the film very much.  I thought it was very good science fiction.  The viewer now knows how the Aliens were created.  However, I am still left with questions that should be answered in the next film.

Re: Prometheus

It's still not playing here. I'll definetly watch it although the reviews are so mixed ...

Re: Prometheus

Well, ylvs, I definitely thought the visuals were worth the price of admission even if the story was riddled with plotholes.

Basically like most Ridley Scott movies.

Re: Prometheus

Forgot to mention that I saw this while it was in theaters. While the visuals were great, I knew from the minute the ship's crew was introduced that they were doomed. Unlikeable crew = cannon fodder. Utterly predictable. Not Ridley's best film (for me, that's Legend).

Re: Prometheus

My verdict: Gorgeous but stupid. And yes I'll probably see the next one too...

Re: Prometheus

Hee!

But isn't that a bit sad? That we'll go to see a stupid film just because of the visuals? It just encourages them to keep making beautiful films with moronic scripts.

Heck yes it's stupid :) But sometimes you luck out and get a visually stunning film with great story. Though I suppose we often go to the cinema pretty certain it won't be a great plot and just hoping the visuals will be good enough to distract us.

Just the one. Which started off so good, and with so much promise. It devolved into a parody of itself, though.

I think the problem was in the editing. See, the first books were well-edited. One character was even edited out of the first book because his parts were worthless. So in the first book, they were making the effort to chop out worthless parts.

A quote from Harriet McDougal, Jordan's wife -- and his editor-- tells the story:

Harriet McDougal wrote:

McDougal edited Robert Jordan's books until his death in 2007, though her role lessened as the years went on. In her words: "By the last of the Wheel of Time books, my role was primarily that of wife

In other words, the earlier books were heavily edited. By the end, they weren't getting edited any more.

Every author, no matter how talented and popular, needs an editor. If a book is unedited, you end up with the mess that is the Wheel of Time.

Re: Prometheus

That is so true. And it applies to directors as well. If Quentin Tarantino had an editor he would be a great film maker. But he's just too full of himself.

And thanks for the info. I always wondered why the first WoT books were so much better ...
