Marvel's Avengers

Marvel's Avengers!  Coming out next year!  Captain America!  Thor! Iron Man!  And the rest!  Directed by Joss Whedon, best known for his Eisner Award winning comic, Sugarshock!  I'm running out of exclamation points!

Check out the trailer:

Looks like the special effects could definitely use some work.  Was is that Cap is wielding, a garbage can lid?

Re: Marvel's Avengers

Good trailer!!  However, I believe the producers need to increase their budget.  The production values are somewhat..............lacking.

Re: Marvel's Avengers

So I went to see the Avengers ... twice ... yesterday ... and I enjoyed mah bad self both times.  I thought Joss Whedon, a.k.a.  "The Josster," a.k.a. "Jossamonious", really hit it out of the park.  Balancing six different superhero personalities wasn't easy, and we have a ton of superhero movies to prove it.

Anyway, I posted my thoughts on my blog if anyone's interested:

Re: Marvel's Avengers

Saw this over the weekend. Not knowing much about superheroes/comics, I was a little afraid of going in and not understanding what was going on. But that didn't happen! Turns out I have picked up just enough knowledge to get the general jist of things, which was nice. The only parts I was a bit lost on were scenes involving Hawkeye and/or Black Widow. Oh, and Loki was a bit fuzzy; heard the name via mythology, but that's about it. Thought he was a god/demi-god, guess that was kind of true? And didn't know he wasn't Thor's real brother. *shrug* Fiancee had a few more issues with the movie, such as (1) Nick Fury not being depicted how he was shown in the comics, (2) Picking a scrawny, pretty boy for Capt America, (3) How did Cap know Hulk said "Smash" when they'd only just met, and a few other things. Overall, I rate 4/5, would see again. (Also would rent Iron Man movies, because wow I didn't realize Stark was that snarky! It's funny!)

Saw it this weekend. LOVED it! Joss is boss. Still think Stark/Ironman is my fav, but enjoyed all the characters. Happy to see how Hulk was treated in this, too.

Re: Marvel's Avengers

I want so much to see it but all cinis only show it in stupid 3d. And I refuse to pay extra money for a feature I dislike.

Re: Marvel's Avengers

Will they eventually screen it without 3d there? We purposely skipped the 3d, but most screens in our area were 3d, which just gives me a headache.

You definitely should.  Iron Man 1 & 2 were all snarky Stark, and it was wonderful.  Plus Robert Downey does a great job of playing a guy who's probably a pain-in-the-butt to deal with in real life, but is trying oh-so-very-hard to be a good man (and not always succeeding at that).

Re: Marvel's Avengers

Back when I read comic books (which was in the 1980s) Hawkeye looked like this, so I spent the first half of the movie not knowing who this was.

I also noticed a plot hole that kept bugging me, concerning The Hulk. When he first turned into the green guy, he literally wanted to smash everyone (including Black Widow) into pieces. He had absolutely no control of his mental facilities.

Later on in the film, Hulk is not only able to control his emotions enough to make sure the others come to no harm, he actually joins them in killing off the bad guys, going from a mindless, uncontrollable rage machine to a monster who can control himself... yet this is never explained.

Re: Marvel's Avengers

Firs: I noticed that too and found it a bit confusing (Hulk). I have my own theory of why that was, but is there an actual reason that's explained in the comics? (I was thinking it looked like he might've hit his head on the way down, passed out for a couple seconds, maybe that sort of "reset" his control?)

Good theory, Ad1tu! But if so, they should have put it in the movie.

Re: Marvel's Avengers

Since I'm the resident comics guy, there are times that the Hulk does change his personality.  There was a celebrated Peter David run in the 80's where dumb Hulk suddenly gained the same intelligence/rage control as Bruce Banner, for example, so he was a giant green dude with the brain of a scientist.

However, I don't think that's what happened in the movie.  (Most geeky reviews, by the way, are right up there with you, Ron.  I think the dudes at Half in the Bag and iFanboy also pointed out to the same scene, and while they were both positive on the movie, they also said it was a bit of a plot hole.)

The best explanation I've read is the difference is that Hulk had accepted his role.  He was a crazy rage beast earlier because he was fighting it, fighting it, fighting it --- so when the monster came out, he was at odds with his beastial nature.  This time, though, he was solely responsible for his transformation, and thus he was more under control.

But yeah, that wasn't really explained in the movie.  It seems like maybe Whedon cut a scene out there to establish Hulk's transformation.

As for Hawkeye, he's based on Ultimate Hawkeye.  He was a character from Marvel's Ultimate imprint (basically a rebooted Marvel Universe that makes it easy for new readers to jump on).  There he was just a regular military dude with expertise in archery.  They probably went with that guy because Original Recipe Hawkeye was a circus archer who turned to a life of crime before joining up with the Avengers --- and there was no way to fit an entire circus tent on that flying aircraft carrier. :)

Re: Marvel's Avengers

I liked the movie. Seen it twice already and in 3D. I never read the comics so I had nothing to complain about. Joss Whedon did a great job in creating a fun movie, haven't had that much fun in the cinema for a long time. Of course Stark is still the best, but they did a good job in fleshing out all the heroes in this one. It could easily have got awfully wrong with so many big personalities coming together. Thor was the weakest one in my opinion, although he is also my least favourite character, so I don't mind. Liked the Shakespeare in the Park scene though:

Maybe that scene will be restored in the Director's Cut. Let's hope.
