Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

I'm with strangeshe, Ad1tu.
Set your boundaries and stick to them, annoying and exhausting as it is.

I absolutely can't keep up with the amount of lettuce in my tiny garden!

Ad1tu, I can just imagine how annoying it must be to be told you "have to" go out and "have fun" - I don't have anyone telling me that, luckily... I just catch myself thinking it. But in truth, most "fun" things are just exhausting for me, and really not worth the money.

Yep, me too. If "having fun" becomes a goal or even a chore, well, that's no fun!

Mmm, lovely salads & veggies! I'm so glad summer's almost here -- looking forward to all that lovely produce!

I always have a hard time resisting fruit and veggies at the store - much harder than with candy! - which is kind of silly when I can't keep up with what I grow myself!

Re: QM - the mad office

Thanks for the support, everyone :) I have noticed that the more I get into my nutrition / exercise program, the more frustrating it is to see / hear ads that say "Diets don't work! Lose weight quickly and don't change what you eat!" as well as the "Oh I could never do what you're doing" line I hear from people. The first one is annoying because all those things are unhealthy, (1) because it's not good for your body to drop weight that quickly, and (2) It doesn't do anything to prevent you from gaining the weight right back because it doesn't show you where your bad habits are. The second is annoying because I didn't think I could do it, but I'm at least trying. Yeah, it's hard, but it's going to be. You have your tastes and your body is going to get grumpy when it doesn't get what it's used to. And if you don't exercise or only do light exercise, ramping it up is going to be hard, because it does you no good to just lift a 5 lb weight with poor form and it isn't even 50% of your max weight. So yeah, you're gonna be sore! It's just hard for me to find ways to say these things nicely. I have the same reaction to that phrase as I do to, "Wow, you were a physics major! That must've been hard, you must be really smart! I could never do that." Ok thanks? I guess it's supposed to be a compliment?

On a more positive note, I just ate the tastiest yogurt EVER. The stores here just started carrying it, the brand is Fage and I bought the Total 2% kind. It's a greek yogurt. I've been having the Chobani yogurt, but it tasted a bit weird, so I didn't really enjoy it, but it was basically the only one that didn't add suar. The Fage is soooo creamy. And rather than the fruit mixed in, it comes in a little separated portion so you don't have weird watery yogurt. Highly recommend.

Re: QM - the mad office

Today I didn't get asked if I'm a vegetarian - instead, I got asked if I'm religious. Apparently, my bandana (which I wear so as not to get a sunburn on my scalp) makes me look as if I was...
That was kind of a weird conversation anyway - I mean, African immigrants trying to chat me up has happened before (though not in a while, since I hardly ever ride town buses/trams any more), but this is the first time anyone has decided to talk to me because he noticed my dirty feet! (Because he works on a farm and was wondering if I'm working on one too.)

My customers have been various levels of idiotic, again. One time, I very nearly dropped the box I was holding and burst out laughing because one woman got a plant name hilariously wrong. And just before I went home, this guy tries to start haggling? Seriously - you come in past our official closing time and try to tell me you'll only pay € 1.50 for a plant that costs € 1.80? And you're actually serious? Luckily, I had to go catch my train, so I told them to talk to the boss's wife.

Re: QM - the mad office

Getting partially roped into another clean-up / double-check project at work. Not that I particularly mind these tasks, but uhhh we've had this contract for over a year, done something like 22 orders, and we're just now running an audit on this crap? THAT is the annoying part. Also having to hunt down invoices that get "borrowed".

Gonna install Diablo 3 when I get home from work tonight! Fiancee had bought 2 collector's editions, but I was having a moment of "Ehhhh idk if I wanna play, what if I don't like it, I don't want you to have wasted money," blah blah. But it looks fun and I think I wanna play either a wizard or a monk.

Re: QM - the mad office

Brrr. Cold, rainy day - astonishingly many customers, though, and astonishingly good tips for a rainy day, too. Nice! Also, my mother called me in the morning and invited me to dinner, so I didn't have to cook or do the dishes, and even better - tomorrow is a holiday!

Re: QM - the mad office

Oof. So we (work) decided to digitize some of our paper invoices. Waiting for the scanner to transfer to the server takes a looooong time... And then I have to break down all the PDFs into individual invoices. Because I wasn't about to stand at the scanner and spend the 2 minutes it would take to load invoice, name, scan, and transfer for each paper copy...

Re: QM - the mad office

I'm surrounded by very annoying people.

Coworker said "I never put labels in the label printer wrong!" ... This is the same coworker who "broke" the label printer a week or two ago, causing the IT guys to spend over half an hour trying to figure out what was wrong with the computer, the drivers, etc, when nothing was...

Re: QM - the mad office

The guy who asked me about my dirty feet a couple of days ago was there again today. I mean, it's kind of nice to be able to practise talking in English, but today he went all religious on me. One of the things I can't stand is people trying to shove their religion down my throat. So if he expects more than just an occasional chat on the train, that's the perfect reason to say, "sorry, that's not gonna work."

Re: QM - the mad office

Finally, finally weekend. (When customers say, "Good bye, and have a nice weekend" on a Friday, it's so hard not laugh at them. In a rather frustrated and bitter way.)

A little I-wish-I-had-my-camera-with-me moment today as I biked past my mother's house: four cars parked in a row - a green one, a red one, a blue one, a yellow one. It looked so funny, kind of unreal, even.

Re: QM - the mad office

Had a good weekend. Had the usual weekend fun (cleaning, laundry, groceries) plus we went to breakfast with fiancee's parents, which was nice. They didn't want to stay and visit for a while longer though, because their poor DOG was going to be alone. (I'm pretty sure your dog can survive for more than 3 hrs by himself...) So we played a bunch of Diablo 3. I played a wizard, which was fun. Then Sunday we went for an early morning bike ride, saw lots of ducks in the river. Finished up Diablo. Having never played the other 2, I don't really have a good reference, but I thought the game was overall fun. The dialogue was a bit cheesy.. some things you could see coming from a mile away (Yeah, it's so convenient that one character HAPPENS to have all the answers...) how they do skills is a little weird, but apparently there's an option to change them around a bit, which is good (haven't played with it yet).

So we came into work this morning and the servers were down. Fiancee is sys admin, so he went straight to work fixing it. Coworkers mingle about, drink coffee, I go around writing down everyone's clock in time... Then about 30 min later, servers are up and running, yayyyy! (Our crappy proprietary software doesn't play nice with ANYTHING, and somehow it hard locks the server.) So about 15 min later, I overhear coworker say, "Where are all my scans??" We have a big multi function printer (prints, copies, faxes, scans, etc) that everyone uses for scanning. Once the printer scans the paper, it then transfers the PDF scan over to the server. Well, coworker decided to do alllllllll the scanning (a good half hrs worth) while the server was not running. I literally had to walk away to laugh... the button you push says "Scan to Server"... what did you think was going to happen??
