Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

I really should go and reread Mists of Avalon. I loved it so much and have not read it for twenty years (still hate being able to say that!!!)

And if you want to know the answer to your spoilery question Ad1tu you have to read further than book 1, I'm afraid.

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Finally got around to buying part 2 and 3 of the Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb, and I'm ridiculously thrilled about Thick. I actually was from the first glimpse of him in part one, because it made me realize how rarely we see characters with disabilities in Fantasy books... or actually in any books at all, unless the disabilities are what the book is about.
(OK, so there is Prusas... but... shameful admittance... I can't even remember if there was any point to him being a cripple, or a reason why the autarch picked him as his scotarch... I don't know why, but I always had a hard time keeping the characters and events of the Shadowmarch series straight. Never had that problem with Tad's other books.)

Well... fiddlesticks. So I guess I'll start bracing myself for having to buy the other 2 books now... $7.70 and $7.14 off Amazon...

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Finished An Election by Scalzi and I've started Catching Fire (book 2 of The Hunger Games trilogy) by Collins.

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Well, I finished The Hunger Games two nights ago. Decided I really didn't want to try and start Shadowmarch and leave the poor series hanging, so I just went ahead and bought Catching Fire and Mockingjay. I did like how HG ended--it had closure. I didn't feel compelled to buy the next book because I was left with a cliffhanger. So far CF is good, interesting little twist right there in the beginning... I'll be interested to see how that goes. Plus I do like Katniss as a character.

Finished Catching Fire in the wee hours of the morning and started Mockingjay. Wow.

Finished The Hunger Games, finished Catching Fire, onto Mockingjay. Quite enjoying the series so far. Wanting to yell at Katniss a bit, but I suppose that's par for the course...

Finished Mockingjay. Extremely good reading. Next up is How I Proposed to my Wife: An Alien Sex Story by John Scalzi.

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Finished Mockingjay as well. Very good trilogy. To me, it really emphasized the point that there are two sides to every story / war / conflict (the Districts vs. the Capitol) and trading one extreme for the other isn't any better. And also that it's really, really, REALLY hard to get the truth. That's the position so many people are stuck in, you hear bits and pieces from all over and there's so much conflicting information, how do you know what's real?

Onto Shadowmarch! Finally!

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Started reading that ol' Raymond Feist novel "Magician: Apprentice" while I was on vacation last week.  It started out strong, but as I get deeper and the focus drifts from Pug to the other characters, it gets less and less interesting.  Not to mention that Feist hadn't done enough to allay the inherent ridiculousness of a fantasy world getting invaded by "aliens" (the term is used quite often) from another dimension. I feel like when I finish it, it will be because of my own stubbornness rather than any actual enjoyment from the story.

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Reading library books now... Shannara series by Terry Brooks.... It's a pleasant read, well-written, but I keep being reminded of LOTR at every turn of events.... the big events mirror LOTR, baring slight variations... quite weird!

Do love the hints of it being about earth after we destroyed ourselves and our science!!

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

I finished rereading Dragons of Ordinary Farm today, so I'll start Secrets tomorrow. It's already in my bag, so I don't forget it - train rides and lunch breaks without a book would be a sad thing (and I kind of can't wait for the busy season to be over, and me being the only employee again - I mean, my busy-season colleague is nice and all, but I dislike it when she talks to me during break. I want to read!)

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Just finished Kameron Hurley's God's War, which was awesome! Had I read it in 2011 when it was released, it would have been tied with Erikson's The Crippled God for my favorite read of the year!

Do give it a shot!

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Finished "Last Argument of Kings", and followed it up with "Best Served Cold". Now I'm reading "The Heroes". Still really enjoying it, but I liked the trilogy much more than the two stand-alones (at least so far...not done "The Heroes" yet).

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Tada! Finished Shadowmarch, onto Shadowplay!

Itsy bitsy baby potential spoilers...............

I have noticed that it's very odd the things I remember vs the things I don't remember. Like right now, I have this overwhelming feeling that Skurn (creepy raven thing) is bad, and I don't know why. In Smarch, I had this feeling that Brone was not to be trusted, but I had no idea why I thought that. Now I do! And I swear Jeddin meets up with Qinnitan again. Again, don't know why, maybe I'm just being hopeful?

The human brain is a very odd thing..

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Finished Shadowplay, onto Shadowrise! Wheee.

I'm just glad I finally found out where the autarch was going! Qinnitan's part is starting to make sense. I'm a bit confused about the Chert/Opal/Flint storyline, mainly I think I missed a section? As there seemed to be a bit of a jump, so I'm going to have to go back and re-read the end bits of 'play.

Re: What Are You Reading Now, Hmmmmm?

Oh, joy! Oh, rapture! I finally finished a book. I was beginning to wonder if that would ever happen again. ~giggle~ I finally finished My Favorite Fantasy Story edited by Martin H. Greenberg. The only story I knew and really liked in the collection was Unicorn Variations by Zalazny. I also managed to polish of a story by Charles de Lint called The Butter Spirit's Tithe. Now I've moved on to Redshirts by John Scalzi.
