A Memory of Light
For what it's worth, Brandon Sanderson has finished the first draft of AMoL. He expects it to be published sometime in 2012, probably in the fall. This will (at last) conclude The Wheel of Time.

Re: A Memory of Light
I remember well when I started reading this series, while I was doing my military service in 96-97. 16 years later it's finally coming to an end! It's a shame Jordan couldn't live to see it, but I do think the new writer Sanderson added some much needed action to the final volumes. It will be a strange feeling, I'm sure, to turn the last page of this 10,000-page journey. It's still set for a January release, so that looks good.

Worth 23 years of waiting? no.
Yes.

No spoilers. The book is horribly, horribly padded. 900 pages long, and all of it could have fit comfortably in a 100-page book. Scene after repetitive scene of the same things happening over and over. Lots of focus on characters who were only recently introduced. A mind-numbingly stupid scene about 800 pages in.
Despite all my complaining and eye-rolling, there were good parts, all in the last 50 pages or so. The ending was not worth all the aggravation and endless garbage. But it was an ending, and a pretty good one.
I'm just glad it's over. Finally, finally over.

Ok, so I'll read the synopsises (is that the right plural?) of books 7 to umpteen on wikipedia, the borrow the last from the library and read the last 50 pages ... sounds like a good plan!

Indeed, Ylvs. But nobody could have predicted this train wreck in 1990. Hindsight is 20/20, they say.

Thank god for that. I was expecting the worst. I might actually read it now. maybe. I'm still ploughing through 'Armor' misspelled, uh, I mean written by John Steakly at the moment. It's not bad, but not as good as Starship Troopers or Ender's Game.

No one knows the correct plurals of most formerly-Latin loan words in English. Merriam-Webster gives the plural as "synopses".

Sure sounds smart to me! Starting on the bottom of page 791 would ensure that you get the gist of the whole ending. Still padded, but you get all the important showdowns.

It is not the worst. Although 800 pages (out of 900) are totally useless.

Hee!

Very little Sci Fi in this world is as good as Ender's Game, Gen. That's a total classic. Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn kicks The Wheel of Time's butt, and I say that as someone who has read both series in their entirety.*
If you want a really good fantasy series that you can lose yourself in for many months, MS&T is the one.
*Well, except for some skipped Mat and Aviendha scenes. HHHHAAAATTTEEEDDD them!

I'll get there! I promises!
As for sci-fi my personal all time favourite has to be Dune. Not the sequels, they suck.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was also pretty awesome.
