Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Kindle

My wife got a Kindle a while back.  She put some stuff on it before travelling and then didn't use it much.  I stuck a couple books on it recently and read them, in part just to test it out, and I must say I really enjoy reading on that device!  I think I prefer it to both paperback (bending back pages) and hardcover (too big).  I'll probably still buy Tad's stuff on hardcover for the bookcase, but I think I'll get my stories on the kindle a majority of the time now.

Re: Kindle

I've been debating getting one for a long time (and trying to decide whether it'd be kindle or nook).  I'm leaning very strongly towards just finally doing it.... I'll always have a large traditional library (I /love/ my books!) but, for stuff I don't really want to keep around, an e-reader seems handy.  Just haven't quite decided if I can get used to it, but if it's like you say, it must be an easy adjustment. (I have same issues with bending paperbacks and heavy hardcovers.)

Also, I may be getting involved with e-book conversions, so probably should have a device to see how the output looks.

Re: Kindle

I have a Nook, but I would not recommend it. B&N's customer service is not as good as Amazon. If this one breaks again out of warranty, I will be replacing it with a Kindle. Both my daughters have Kindles.

I love my physical books as well. The reasons I purchased an e-book reader are: (1) we would have to move into a bigger house to accommodate any more books (which is not an option); (2) to read classics, which are available for free through the Gutenberg Project; and (3) traveling - I always run out of room to bring enough books.

Re: Kindle

We're going to start carrying Kindles at work in August, so I'm considering getting one for travel purposes. What annoys me, though, is that I do a LOT of rereading, and I really don't want to have to pay twice for the same book in a different format.

Re: Kindle

I recently received a kindle as a gift so I'm trying it out now.  There is one thing that annoys me about it - when I read in bed, I have to angle it *just so* to avoid getting glare from the bedside lamp.  But it is quite handy when you're eating too.  I think bf will end up using it more than me though.  He's managed to break every pair of reading glasses within weeks of purchasing them so being able to adjust the font size would be really good for him.

My Nook is not a replacement for my books. I use it (mostly) to read the classics I can get for free and do not have room to store.

My wife got a case for hers for $20 that flips open and becomes a stand that holds it upright at an adjustable angle for reading.

Re: Kindle

Thanks, Wolfshade!  I'll have to get one of those 'cuz I've also discovered that if you nod off while reading the kindle and it slips out of your hand, it hurts more than a paperback.

However, falling asleep with one of Mr. Williams' books in a hard book can cause major injury to one's nose!

Re: Kindle

Popping out of the woodwork for a brief moment (If anyone remembers me:  Hey!  It's been a while!)... I picked up a Kindle to make reading on my daily commute less of a hassle, particularly when reading the genre I refer to as "wristbreaker fantasy".

It's been a godsend.  I'd go so far as to say that it's been massively influential in getting me reading again after a bout of ill health left me unable to read sensibly for several months (long story, thankfully mostly over now).  Now I couldn't do without it.

My plan is to use the kindle for books I want to read, and to buy the physical objects for books I want to own.  It's working out pretty well for me so far, to be honest.

...and now I shall vanish woodwork-wards again, most likely!

Re: Kindle

I don't actually have a Kindle, but I have the Kindle app on my phone and I am so loving it. I was actually very surprised by that fact because I cannot abide reading on my computer and I just assumed that reading on my phone would be like reading on my laptop. So not. I don't think I could go without my Kindle app enabled phone. I love being able to read between classes without having to drag extra books around with me. And reading at the movies while waiting for things to get started. And riding in cars while others drive.
