Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

June 1st, and still wearing my winter jacket. And not even a Storm King to blame and to fight against.

Nah, that won't work in this case. I have 6 stitches of black, about 200 of yellow and then another 6 of black. Of course it 'could' work, but it just isn't efficient. I'll just skip the black edge. It was only there to make sure the stockinette wouldn't curl. I'll just make the edge out of yellow as well. (I thought doing it in black would be easier on the counting front.)

You could do selvedge stitch(sounds sophisticated, but it's not, look it up) on the beginnings of the rows so it doesn't curl inwards(towards the purl side). And if you still want to do a black edge, you could crochet it after the blanket's finished.

There's really not a whole lot you can do to prevent stockinette edges from curling while you're still in the knitting stage.  The curling is caused by the structure of the stitch itself.  You can try different types of borders, as sisterdew suggests, but it is more important to block your pieces after you've finished knitting.

There are many online resources on blocking, and many blocking tools available.  Essentially you would wash your piece(s) according to the recommendation on the yarn label (usually by hand, cold water, gentle detergent), then lay them out on a flat surface, coax the piece(s) into the correct finished dimensions, and let dry naturally.  A thick towel on a table works well.  When the piece dries, much* of the inherent curling goes away.

*This is dependent on the fiber content of the yarn; wools and wool-like fibers will block quite flat, while cotton and linen not so much.  I've not worked with bamboo yarn, but my understanding is that they behave much like cotton and linen.

aah, blocking. I keep forgetting about that. Mostly because I didn't need to yet. (socks are blocked on the feet, heh. and scarves, cowls, hats and mitts that are not lace or cabled..well)

your blueness, can I block a blanket after I made a crochet- border? I might want to try it out on my blanket, just to see the effects.

Yes, you can, but I generally recommend blocking first.  This ensure that you are crocheting to the correct finished edge dimension, which you get after the blocking process.

right. I guess I could frog the border, it's only one row slip stitch anyway. Hmhm, will see. First, I need space for that!

*tumbles into mint*

We're back to normal... well... at least semi-normal....I certainly am considering putting n end to this whole month-end business... too much work, especially when one's manager decides to take an extra day off, leaving you to fend the ford... or whatever that expression may be...

Have my first ever irish whistle and irish flute lesson next week... and I'm actually nervous.... I'm playing songs off youtube now, but I have no idea whether I'm good enough for these advanced lessons... and my irish flute is just not sitting in my hands like it should.... so my neighbours have to suffer me using every minute of daylight to practise, practise, practise... Which prolly isn't too bad with the whitles, but you would not believe the horrible sounds I make with the flute.... Maybe seven years of recorder lessons have ruined my hands and brain for the flute....
I am being really silly, so hoping she'll like me and like what I do on the whistles and take me on for more lessons.... *crosses fingers*

Re: QM - Let's Go Hunting!

Yay to flute lessons! Good luck on them!

Sisterdew, I might already be doing a selvedge edge. On every row I purl, I knit 6 stitches in the beginning and 6 at the end. We'll just have to see how it works out. :) I can always block it when it's done.

Re: QM - Let's Go Hunting!

Rain, rain, rain. Came home soaking wet, dreaming of a hot shower - but no chance of that, since we're getting new taps in the bathroom (one has been dripping pretty badly, and Mama seems to have decided she might as well replace both.)
