The Hobbit

My brother and sister and I totally did a Lord of the Rings movie marathon over the Christmas break, and it was an enjoyable experience (though I was the only one to last all the way to the end of the Return of the King).

Anyway, it got my appetite whetted for The Hobbit movie.  It's got an excellent director in Guillermo Del Toro, and it seems a lot of the principal actors, who were all well cast from the Lord of the Rings, are returning (Ian Mckellen, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis).  The rumor that Tobey McGuire may be Bilbo, which worried me a lot, turned out to be false, and it seems like good money that Mr. Baggins of The Shire will instead by played by James McAvoy (which seems more Bilboesque, if you ask me... though Sir Ian Holm will always be Bilbo to me).

Rumor is that the movies will incorporate events that did not occur in The Hobbit, such as the White Council (which will allow them to bring in Cate Blanchett as Galadriel) and their attack on Sauron the Necromancer --- alluded to in the book, expanded in the LOTR appendices.  I'm actually OK with expanded events like that, as long as it doesn't mess with The Hobbit story proper.  I was a little worried when they split the film into two that they'd be tempted to go the epic route, but Del Toro is an experienced hand when it comes to translating kid's books to films, thus I worry no longer.

Anyone else excited?

Re: The Hobbit

I am just as excited as you are Rook!!  I am already looking forward to seeing "The Hobbit" even though the first film is not scheduled to be released until the 2011 Christmas film season.

Also do take note that Peter Jackson is also working with Steven Spielberg on a live action film adaption of "Tintin", which is also scheduled for Christmas 2011. They are making  the two book story,"The Secret of the Unicorn" and "Red Rackham's Treasure" into two distinct films.  I also believe that Andy Serkis will portray Captain Haddock.  Anyway, I am already impatient for the 2011 Christmas film season and that is still just under two years away.

P.S. For those of you unfamiliar with "Tintin", they are series of graphic novel children's books written by Herge, a Belgian writer, between 1928 and 1976.  They were originally published in French, but have since been translated into several different languages.

Re: The Hobbit

Totally stoked! I have been since 2001 when The Fellowship of the Ring first came out. I hope part one comes out soon.

Re: The Hobbit

According to E!Online:

The pair of Hobbit movies has been pushed back to the end of 2012, according to Variety. The studio tells the trade the best outlook for the Lord of the Rings prequels is in the fourth quarter of that year, but even that's not set in stone.

Re: The Hobbit

I wonder if they'll bring in a new director or if Jackson will bite the bullet and do the film himself.

Re: The Hobbit

since Peter Jackson now has the opportunity to direct the film itself.  Let us hope that he will take it.  It would be the perfect follow up to his Lord of the Rings films.

Re: The Hobbit

Wow. Just imagine the 2 years or so that GDT already put into developing what has to be an amazing movie. And then he has to step down because of  funding and scheduling? That has to be disappointing.

The Hobbit is one movie that I would want to see over any other being developed now. I'm imagining years in the future, when we're all snug in our homes watching the special edition DVD features where they talk about the development of the movie, and all the sturm und drang that it took to get the movie out there. I do hope that things get on track soon, and that this ends up being the great movie we all want it to be.

Has PJ made any statements yet that he might direct it?

Re: The Hobbit

I kinda like the idea of a director other than Peter Jackson directing The Hobbit.  PJ is more about epic imagery, which was suitable for the Lord of the Rings.  The Hobbit, though, is different in tone and scope... much more geared toward whimsy.  I thought GDT was a great choice.  I'm not sold that PJ would be the right replacement.  I'd probably throw my hat in for Terry Gilliam if I wasn't so sure that wouldn't somehow get the movie delayed another 6 years.

Re: The Hobbit

Even with all these delays floating around, I'm still pretty excited for this movie! The Hobbit is one of my favourite books behind the Osten Ard trilogy... those four are easily my top picks for favourite books, and to see a movie done of the Hobbit — w-well, a movie that's not the Rankin-Bass animated feature, anyway — makes me so happy!

Now I just have to settle in for the hard part: Waiting. And maybe another re-read or three. ;-)

Re: The Hobbit

I've heard that Neil Blonkamp has a very good chance of directing it. It would make sense, seeing his history with Jackson and how successful their teaming up was with District 9. Please come true.

Re: The Hobbit

It was over on theonering.net that actor Martin Freeman won't be playing Bilbo Baggins, although he was one of the favorites to play the character. He has a scheduling conflict with working on the BBC series *Sherlock*.

Drat, I could definitely seen him playing the role.

Re: The Hobbit

I do hope for Jackson, although he should not turn it into a second LOTR..... but as long as it's not Yates, I'd settle for pretty much anyone... eh... well not really, but please don't let it be Yates.....

As to Bilbo... I'm just going to wait for it.... they were even mentioned David Tennant at a certain time... tschhh.... well, that would be an interesting thing to see... hahahaha

Re: The Hobbit

The controversy now isn't so much who will direct it, but where they will direct. Because of union laws, it looks like it most likely moving from New Zealand to Europe. All I can say is...crap.

Re: The Hobbit

People involved with the films said Friday that they expected a resolution to the union dispute imminently (which means it'll be New Zealand after all). Also:

After months of negotiation and delay, Warner Brothers and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are on the verge of an agreement that would allow the director Peter Jackson to begin shooting a two-part version of J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” early next year.

So that all looks hopeful, except then for this horror:

The films are to be made in 3-D, one of those involved in the bargaining said. That is a shift from when the project was conceived and the plan was to make them in 2-D, but the film world has changed in the many months since then.

Urgh.
