Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Spending 1 1/2 hours playing with my plants, repotting and pinching back and moving around and making a mess with compost, sphagnum moss and pine bark, scattering leaves and pots and saucers all over the balcony...

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Going for a long walk in the forest with my best friend, talking, talking, talking, balancing on cut-down trees, eating blackberries, enjoying the quiet and the clean air...
Walking home in the dark, singing silly songs just to pass the time...
Wearing my cloak because my coat was in the laundry, running across the street with the cloak billowing behind me and laughing at what the passing drivers must think...

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Bright sunshine for the first time in days, lighting up the red and yellow leaves on the trees.

Gandalf learning that putting on the harness means going outside, and going outside is fun. (It's a funny coincidence that I'm writing this/thinking about this today, precisely a year after my best friend's father died. They had a cat they'd take everywhere on a leash, and if it weren't for him, I wouldn't even try this with Gandalf.)

The sight of the Moon in the sky...
Snow falling...
My dog Rhiannon's "ha-ha" face...
Hitting the trail for a hike...
Feeling my cat Buddy curl up next to my leg at night for snoozetime...
An excellent guitar riff...
Pouring a new, delicious-smelling craft brew...
Opening a new box of "Godiva" chocolates...
Seeing the perfect composition for a photograph...
Thinking of a line that becomes a poem...

Re: What Makes You Happy?

I was just thinking about this the other day. I love the quiet hours in the morning before going to work. Instead of doing something constructive, like exercising, I lie down on the couch for awhile after breakfast. My cats will jump up and settle themselves on top of me. My boy, Tristan, will tuck himself under my chin, purr loudly, and knead on my face with his paws. My girl, Isolde is usually down on my legs doing the same thing.

This feeling is just the best in the world.

Re: What Makes You Happy?

That sounds nice!

I just had a lovely evening, sitting in my reading corner, knitting, with a book on my lap and the cat beside me... it's amazing how much space such a small animal can take up (I hardly had room to sit), but he looks so cute when he rolls over onto his back and covers his eyes with a paw!

Coming out of a crowded store on a rainy day to discover the sun is peeking in under the edge of the clouds, and then looking the other way to find a huge double rainbow. And then, when the rainbow fades, a beautiful sunset.

Drugs!

...

Seriously, I've had gout for the past two weeks, and the anti-inflammatory drugs the doctor prescribed me are workin' wonders.

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Finding out that one of my favourite bands are back. I was quite bummed to find out that Nornensanc (a little Austrian medieval band) had broken up (especially after the disappointment that Omnia was this year), but I've just found out they've found two new members to replace the one who left - hopefully they'll still be as funny as they used to be!

ETA: Judging by how much they're goofing around on one of the videos they've posted, they have no problem with being funny!

Clocking out from work! ;)

Also: Today we had a luncheon in my dept, everyone brought a lil something in. I made some fruit & cheese kabobs and everyone liked them! Making food people like and find tasty makes me happy.

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Catching the pot of milk just before it boils over (as in, just when the milk had reached the edge of the pot!)

Random moments at work and on the way to work:
sunrises
frost sparkling in the morning sun
a perfectly star-shaped snowflake landing on my sleeve
the sun coming in through the shop doors and lighting up the daffodils
the gleam of a pansy petal in the sunshine
the sparkle of a water drop on a tulip leaf
the primrose table just glowing in the evening sun

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Yesterday it was GORGEOUS out (sunny, 70F) so me & the fiancee left work early, opened all the windows in apt, and spent the afternoon lounging around together. That made me pretty happy :)

Saturday breakfast on the balcony - without a sweater, even! It's that warm!

And all my vegetable seeds sprouting - I even spotted the first carrot today, and those are notoriously slow.

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Forest hikes. Flowers. Singing birds. And the first scented violets! Oh, I love that smell!

And my Palatschinken (pancakes) finally turning out perfect. I've been so frustrated for over a year, because they always came out either disgustingly oil-soaked or too dry, and too thick and stiff - and the solution turned out to be so simple: I only needed a pan without non-stick coating (which aren't all that easy to get any more). I actually jumped and squealed with joy last night when I flipped over the first one and it looked just as it is supposed to!

Re: What Makes You Happy?

Magpie: I think the only pans we own are ones without non-stick coating. Myself, fiancee, and fiancee's mom all swear they cook better.
