Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Tell me that when it's 40

I think that's why Canberra houses generally have neither adequate heating nor cooling (WTF don't we all have ceiling fans, at the very least?)  - you forget about each season till it happens, then you don't have the money right then to do something about it, or all the heaters/air-conditioning units are out of stock.  By the time you _are_ able to buy a decent heater, it's in the 30s again and it seems like a silly idea.  Likewise with aircon.

Interesting stat - the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures so far this year has been 45 degrees (82 f).
If we can just hit minus 10 this winter, we'll have a round 50 :)
(not likely to happen though, -6 is the coldest we've had in my memory, -10 is the coldest on record)

Re: QM - Bar de Doom

Maen Mint!

My server didn't come up after a reboot; now waiting for someone from the company I host with to go have a look. Really hoping a press on the power button to make it reboot again will fix it, but frantically getting stuff installed on my backup server just in case. Why did I ever decide on such a byzantine set of programs for my original server? Oh yes - I was young and stupid and didn't know any better...
If the original one has anything seriously wrong, it's going to be a long time before I get a halfway decent website up and running again. (Really should've placed "rewrite website from scratch" nearer to the top of my todo list...) Still, lack of emails bothers me more at the moment... *grumbles*

Re: QM - Bar de Doom

I'm consoling myself with the thought "hey, at least I have a backup server lying around". Which makes me feel good for as long as it then takes me to think, "yeah, which you've had lying around for a friggin' year! Couldn't you have found time to do something with it before now?!"

Re: QM - Bar de Doom

*does the happy dance of happy dance-ness*

I can totally go back to slacking on getting the new server set up. Sooooo many other things to do first. Who cares about that new server anyway??! :D

(Okay, but seriously, as soon as my current project ends come the first of July, I'm going to take as long as it takes to set things up right; don't want to have this happen to me a second time!)

An OTC diet drug that was recently recalled by the FDA on May 1. It causes liver damage and all sorts of other nasty things.

It has been on the market for a while, and was wildly popular.

We're gathering clients for action against the company. I've a couple of people helping me with the phone calls, but otherwise, I'm the only one working the file. As of this morning, I've got almost 3,000 clients, with more coming in daily.

There's all sorts of rules and documentation that I have to follow. We cannot just say "I'm going to ignore this one" because they do not meet criteria.

My paycheck has been very fat lately, what with all the OT.

Re: QM - Bar de Doom

Weekend.

Work was OK, except for a brief time when I wanted to kill the SOB (OK, and one when I wanted to whack him with a bamboo stick).

Now, I should water the balcony and wash the dishes, and come up with something to cook, but I can't get up since I have the cat on my lap. And I'm surrounded by clouds of cat hair.

Re: QM - Bar de Doom

I can turn it into a pencil mug or something. It's mostly a clean break, with the exception of the rim near the break. There lots and lots of chips flaked off.

Re: QM - Bar de Doom

Oooh... I'm so ridiculously tired... ate dinner on the balcony and then nearly fell asleep there, watching the clouds drift and listening to kids playing and someone practising playing the guitar.

I know how you feel. I even had to disappoint Ivo by not wanting to go for a (bicycle) ride with him. But I'm just too tired. Guess I'll tuck in early.

Re: QM - Bar de Doom

/me blinks. This is freaky. I was just coming in to share that I was seriously tired after staying up half the night working on the nackup server and then worrying about the live one during the early morning...
