Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

Seeing how I didn't post since yesterday, switching hard disks sucks. It worked all right, but then I had to install Windows and tons of updates. And since it has already BSOD on me twice, I ran the diagnostics on this disk too. Which took me three hours...

And I'm still not done with the updates...

Bummer, Sahi. But, at least you'll have a computer that doesn't crash every so often.

h-m-m-m. My other paralegal has been reassigned.

I wonder if I should dust off my resume?

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

Hello Mint.

It's been some time, but here I am again.

BSOD, I had a couple of them on the old laptop in the last, say, 2 weeks. I'm actually using it more like an expensive typewriter now, and use this new one for all the fancy stuff.

Besides that, my life has been quite busy for... (I don't even know when I last was here in the Mint) But part of it was also that coming here was a habit, and I quit, but kept reading the forums. And now, so it seems, I'm back.

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

Ooh, brownies AND cookies! I'm ever so glad they're virtual. I've just put myself on a no-candy diet. So I'm only snacking on non-salted nuts and veggies (or at least trying to).

Only the cookies are real on my side of the 'net. I guess I'll just stick to the brownies for now.

Time to go. Will have a lot of stuff to do tomorrow.

Besides that, my mouse pointer is running to the top left of the screen quite fast.

'llo.

It's hot, and it's going to stay hot.
But at least it's not as hot as Melbourne, where they're expecting to be over 40 all week.  urk.

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

Heh, over here it's cold and expected to stay cold.

And I'm really starting to hate Windows Vista. This is the first version of Windows that I really actually hate. It's hopelessly unstable (64bit), it keeps hitting you with unneccesary popups that ask if you really want to do whatever it is you're doing. And for some reason an administrator account still doesn't have all administrator rights.

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

heh, I just had some Vista frustration myself:

see: here and here.

Normally I don't have to deal with it, since I use Linux at work, and on my Eee and on my home desktop machine.  But my laptop dual boots because I need Windows for my music stuff, and right now I'm playing around with Ruby in Windows because Dad is trying to learn it...

It's just so demotivating. My applications keep crashing for no reason as well.

*hellos the Mint*

You could install the previous version of Windows, Sahi. A little more cost, but a lot more stable.

Someday will find you.

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

That requires me to HAVE the previous version of Windows. And since this is my work laptop I can't install any non-legal versions...

Tomorrow they're coming to replace more hardware. Silly Dell. I don't believe for one second that that is going to work.

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

When I was purchasing youngest's laptop, I noticed that Dell was offering (for a fee) to install XP on new systems, rather than Vista.

Re: QM - The Genisis X is leaving Mint

Yeah, I wish my boss had ordered that instead. But they chose 64-bit Vista so we could access all our memory. (Since it has 4GB of memory.)

IF it works it's great. But it's getting more and more instable. :(

Sounds like if it is getting more instable, there's something else going on. I would vote for returning the machine and getting a new one rather than keeping trying to fix this one.

Well they didn't ask me to send it to them yet. They're the ones who came up with the idea of replacing more hardware.

64 bit Ubuntu works wonderfully on my Dell with 4GB of memory ;)

And having said that, I'll go back to bed....heh

Night mabs! Chances are big that I will install a Linux distro after next friday. (Maybe even sooner if my boss gives the green light.)
