February Vienna moot

So Ivo is probably going to Vienna on my birthday, and I was thinking that since there are Smarchers living there, it might be nice to just join him. It's not set in stone yet, but looking very likely.

If it goes through, it will be from Thursday the 12th until Sunday the 15th. Not a clue about what time we'd arrive and what time we'd leave.

Anybody want to join me? And if so, what will we do?

Re: February Vienna moot

Erm. I'll be in Brussels the weekend before and in Stockholm the weekend after, but... Yeah, what the hell. It's been far too long since the last moot. If there's more people signing up (magpie? sisterdew? xavie? lian? Peter? ...?), I see distinct possibilities of me being there, too.

Re: February Vienna moot

I'd love to come but I just can't swim to Italy in five days (leaving one day for the train from Venice to Vienna). So sad.

I need at least seven days for the swimming leg. :P

Sorry. Couldn't help myself :P

You wouldn't have a large enough suitcase, now would you? One that I could borrow from you? Mine aren't big enough to smuggle you in.

The moot's in February, not January. You can have thirtysix days for the swimming and still make it in time! So get started! :D

As Sahi has already said, I'm definitely in. (Just hoping there isn't some catastrophe, like me falling ill, which I usually do once a year around that time.)

Re: February Vienna moot

Eek! I just realized that weekend includes Valentine's day. Might mean more expensive accommodation and stuff. Wish I had certainty about work yet so I could decide for certain...

Re: February Vienna moot

Never thought of that. If all goes well ESA will pay for our accommodation. (Since it is their workshop and Ivo is doing his thesis for them.)

Re: February Vienna moot

Well Ivo should hear more about it tomorrow, so this weekend at the latest we'll book a flight.

So what are the sights we should see and things we should do?

Re: February Vienna moot

this is your first stay in vienna?the obvious, of course: the inner city(Hofburg,Spanish riding school, National Library(BEAUTIFUL!!!)Saint Stephens cathedral, Mozart-House...),even if you leave out the sights the inner city is great to spend an afternoon there
then, of course, Castle Schönbrunn(the castle itself and the Butterfly-House), my bookshop, the Albertina museum(Klimt and stuff), the Giant Wheel and Prater(Fun fair), the Museum Quarter(a bunch of modern museums,cafes,design-shops...).....

aboutvienna.org gives a nice overview, wien.info is a bit more exact(and offers much more sights)

Re: February Vienna moot

Yup, never been to Vienna before. Remind me to bring my camera, but more important to also take lots of pictures. That way I can show Ivo all the stuff he's missed. :)

Re: February Vienna moot

Heh, I'd love to come, and I'm really seriously considering it, but everything is up in the air at the moment due to not yet having heard about work, and I can't influence when I will hear (if there was any justice in the world, it should've been definite last week already). I'm also having trouble making plans with a friend from the USA (who's coming over the week after) because of this. Most vexing.
I'll give you even odds that things work out and and I'll decide to come, and then it'll all just depend on accommodation being available and affordable.

If it comes to it, I'm sure I could organize a place to sleep for a night or two, with lots of puppydog eyes and some bribery.

Re: February Vienna moot

I'm still planning to come, but Ivo is waiting for word from ESA before making travel arrangements. And they're not the fastest bunch around. (Surprisingly considering they're firing rockets, which are known to be pretty fast.)

Re: February Vienna moot

Considering that I only check the Meeting Place about twice a year, this is a lot! Castle Fest in August and Vienna in February. I have to choose and I'm going to pick the Castle Fest, I think. I mean, I hope that I'm going to make it. Since I already have a couple of travel plans in April/March, that will be the better option.

Gah! You tempt me! I already checked the train connections to Vieanna!

You know you want tooooo! Give in to the lure of Vienna! When faced with a dilemma of which meet to attend, the only correct answer is "both"! :D

Re: February Vienna moot

Flight tickets are booked.

ETA at Vienna airport: Thursday February 12 11:05
Return flight from Vienna: Sunday February 15 17:55

We're flying Sky Europe (since it was the cheapest direct flight at a reasonable hour).

So from the airport we first go to the hotel (which is as of yet unknown) to dump our luggage and from there I'll go to wherever we decide to meet up.

Re: February Vienna moot

I should know in a week and a half. On the one hand it's looking hopeful (a lot of uncertainty is gone), but on the other hand, my trip to Stockholm ballooned to maybe also include Riga and/or Tallinn and possibly Sevilla (all also to be decided next week), so I might have to conclude that I'm just trying for too much, and if so, I'm not yet certain which cities would fall off.
