Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

shortages

i don't know.

would somebody with some extra time find a bunch of articles saying 'no, the world isn't going to collapse on itself as a result of using too much crap' ?

because i'm starting to imagine my community evacuated, me building vegetable gardens all over the place while i stroll, kind of scared and euphoric, and clearly this is a product of me being a nut anyhow, but still. if nothing else.

for me. for my nerves.

tell me we're not going to run out of stuff.

but you know. appeal to authority.

I could tell you that, Max, but hey, I'm not so sure I believe it. :)

I wouldn't worry too much. Nothing wrong with growing food. Nothing wrong with post-apocalyptic Road-Warrior type days, right? ;)

Seriously, I have no idea how bad it could be. But if you want to see a bunch of people who think the world is going to hell in a handbasket, fast, go here: http://www.mikeruppert.blogspot.com/  These people are so convinced that Peak Oil and a demand-destruction economy is creating the End Times that they are stocking up on food, buying land, gold and weapons and moving out of cities. Only odd thing is that they have an uncanny ability to be correct in their projections. Freaky. :)

If you want to see a bunch of people who say that it will all be fine, just as soon as they fix a few things, then look to the government.

If you want an optimistic and activist look at things then look to Michael Pollan ( http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_7_ … ix=michael ) and Vandana Shiva ( http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_0_ … ix=vandana )

Check out Gwynne Dyer and Jared Diamond, too. But you prolly already know these people. All are decent, if you know how to read and think--which you do.

If you want the news, straight up and depressing, http://whatreallyhappened.com/  (reader beware, it's got some odd viewpoints, but if you look, the real news is there.)

And, if you are really worried about how to survive if it all goes downhill, here's a start, an idea of what to look forward to: http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/w … sons.shtml  It's a great article that's been floating around for a few years, feeding the fears of those who have, well, fears. :)

part three: http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/w … art3.shtml

If you have a bunch of friends and want to prepare, you know, before the Rapture happens, go here: http://www.survivalblog.com/   :D

I'm not too much help, I spend too much time surfing through the lunatic fringe of the tinfoil-hat league, looking for fun stories.

On a truly serious note, I think I hit a state of slight despair when I saw 'The World According to Monsanto.' I've been growing my own food ever since. Not a lot of it, but it's a start. It's fun, too. And organic. I love it.

(I've said, five million and I can start the smarch commune, man. Seriously. *g*)

Re: shortages

He's back in California, Max. Seems he's doing a lot better, but he seems a bit on the paranoid side nowadays, not without justification, or so the story goes.

He keeps thinking they're going to kill him for posting at his blog, or for sorting out info from news sources he links up. It's kinda sad, but he's still got a decent journalistic mind and is still very often correct in his predictions.

Re: shortages

crossing the rubicon! that's what it's called. i can't believe i read the whole thing.

i basically shifted from reading tad's books to those kind.

both kind of insane devotions i guess.

just the latter makes me shit myself more often. unhealthy habit either way.
