Marian's Living Room

Okay, I guess I've been around here long enough to get a place of my own, huh? Back starts to hurt after all that sleeping on couches (and Quiller's Mint benches....). My goal is to post updates here fairly often, so if/when life steals me away again and I can't spend my days and nights in the Mint, I'll at least let ya'll know how I'm doing here.

My living room in Smarch is much like its sister in the mirror world. Small, cozy, just enough room for a small group of friends, not so big that you feel lost in it. Lots of plants (some not so green these days, alas), a couch, a rocking chair and a wicker chair, a cat named Chloe, a guinea pig named Fig. (They can do double-duty in both dimensions; very talented wee creatures.) There's a sliding glass door that lets in sunshine, and if you go out to the balcony, you can see Sahi's greenhouse across the way and down below. Sometimes the sounds from the Musical Pandemonium are a little ... distracting... so feel free to close the door if I'm not around and it gets loud.

So, come on in (unless the "do not disturb" sign is on the front door), grab a seat on the couch, or a cushion for the floor. There's a little yoga-altar in the corner if you're feeling prayerful, and feel free to grab a book or magazine from the bookshelf - or floor, where they are just as likely to be scattered.

Re: Marian's Living Room

*sighs* Don't you guys have your own place for that?

I do more of the, y'know, knitting and coffee....

But just for today, since you're my first visitor and all, we can put football on.

Re: Marian's Living Room

Okay, my life update, for those of you who I haven't already pestered to death with this stuff:

- Had a complete and total blast in Calgary. Full report (and fun follow-up from friends) here. I'm really looking forward to WFC in Con Jose next year.

- Came home and quit my job. Full report on that fun little bit of jumping off a cliff here.

- Am now sitting on my couch a lot, hanging out here, causing all kinds of trouble.... and when I'm not doing that, I'm working on a book (which is fun, and for once, fun just for the sake of writing, not because I think it will someday rescue me from "real work"), and reading books. I'm re-reading Shadowmarch right now, and did you notice that on his map, Tad made a little abbreviation so it says "S'march castle"? And how he put us in the acknowledgments? I mean, how can you not love Tad? He makes his readers feel so appreciated.

-I still teach at Gold's Gym, but my two BodyFlow classes were just cancelled, so I'm just down to two Yoga classes a week. I do love yoga, but... still stings a bit, and I'll be nursing my wounds there for a while.

- My next job is probably going to be as (my usual fall-back) nanny, which I hope brings a little bit more ease back into my life and allows me to pursue writing a little bit more on the side, and maybe helps me to find a line of work that doesn't completely make me feel like a zombie.

Re: Marian's Living Room

The Grey Cup (The championship game of the Canadian Football League.) is on a week from tomorrow.  Maybe we all  can watch it on Marian's big screen TV.  If she has one, that is.

22 by 16 inches.

You'll have to do your own metric conversions.

I do not think that a conversion is necessary Marian.  I like your TV as is.

Re: Marian's Living Room

may i suggest intelligentsia black cat expresso coffee, sold in raging bean coffee stores, made in a french press. the best i have ever tasted, unless you want top count blue mountain java, which wasn't strong enough in my opinion, as for the coffees that pass through cats or monkees, havent tried those, not sure i want.
but this is the best ive found for daily coffee intake, i pity the world if coffee production ever fails.
Nice living room Marian, good company here.

Thanks, Klynn, good to see you!

I'll note the coffee recommendation for when I'm employed and can splurge on good coffee again.

I will try it, KlynnGrey. Always up for a new adventure.

I got addicted to Peet's 101 when I was living in the Bay Area. Sadly, I have not mail-ordered it much. I should.

If Teyo plays for Calgary, then the answer is yes Marian.  The Calgary Stampeders will play the Montreal Alouettes at Olympic Stadium in Montreal next Sunday.

Nice place Marian!

Hah, I'd been wondering how he got such a Dutch name. Teyo, that is. Though in Dutch we'd spell it Theo (which I know you'd pronounce differently, hence my wondering).

Re: Marian's Living Room

Thanks, Sahi. :)

Okay, update!
***

[cross-posted to LJ]

****

No sign of impending employment. I am a little scared, but also resting in my Crazy New-Age Thought for the Day: I feel like universe wants me to clean my apartment, and open my heart to people around me, and then will give me a job.

****

I love Barack Obama. Just because I haven't said that once today, and it felt weird.
****

Twitters annoy the living daylights out of me. I try to avoid saying negative things about things people do who are on my LJ friends list, especially since I hardly hold blogs to terribly high standards, but I've been holding this one back for a few weeks now, and yesterday pushed me over the edge. At first I didn't even notice Twitters, because they just looked like gobbledeegook splattered in a little block, nonsense words. Then a friend mentioned he had Twitter, and described what was happening and how it showed up and I started keeping an eye out for it. Now I hate it... loathe it.

It reminds me of the first time I saw any LiveJournal - and what kept me away from it for years, I might add - the guy had posted, "I just went down to the hot dog stand for lunch, and they were out of mustard," and his next post was, a half-hour later, was, "The hot dog was pretty good, even without mustard." Seriously!

The ability to say something worthwhile in one sentence is beyond 95% of human beings, or at least on the average day. "I am about to go under anesthesia" would be interesting from just about anyone, just as "I am about to eat a hot dog" is boring from just about everyone.

What made me go over the edge, you ask? I was watching CNN at the gym yesterday and they were posting Twitters at the bottom of the screen. Here's one: "Okay, CNN, we get it, homes are burning, we get it."

My first two reactions are, "Why are you watching CNN if you don't want to hear the same news repeated over and over?" and "CNN, what makes you think we care what this moron thinks?"

I hate this new world of technology sometimes. I hope we evolve past this phase. I hope we grow beyond being people who make phone calls just because we can. (One seatmate on my last trip: "Hi, mom, my plane just landed, I'll call you when I'm in the terminal." "Hi, Joey, my plane just landed, how are you?" "Hi, my plane just landed. I said, my plane just landed....") I hope we stop throwing our words out as fast as we can, wherever we can.

Re: Marian's Living Room

Marian -

Reminds me of a conversation I was having with my boss -- my point was that this society is getting to be a society that demands everything NOW!!! They want their entertainment NOW!!! Their phone calls NOW!!!! They want to buy things NOW!!!

I don't like it.

Someday will find you.

I gotta agree with you many people my age can't wait for anything. Please don't get me started on facebook, one of my friends puts almost all the pictures she takes on it, which is fine with me, except that she takes a lot of me, so I don't know how many pics of me are out there for any one to look at. Scary isn't it.
