Otherland The movie?

I really think that the otherLand series would make the most kick ass movie series. Way better than the matrix. Please let this happen That series is one of my all time favorites. Right up there with the "His dark materieals" golden compass series and anything by mercedes lackey.

Re: Otherland The movie?

I've thought about that too. Well seeing all those Characters moving and hearing them. But I think it would be quite hard to make a movie out of it, and it would be sad, if the movie would turn out to be most horrible.

yeah, and I guess now one below 18 would be alowed in the Cinemas to see it anyway ;D

Movie? I can't see that, not without butchering the story all to hell. There is just too much that is important enough that it should not be left out of the story. A movie would have to be 20 hours long to capture the story IMHO.

I think Sci-Fi channel series is more appropriate for Otherland. Think Farscape, but the Otherland story and worlds instead, as an ongoing series. Hell, depending on how you do it, you could probably get three complete seasons out of the Otherland series just as it stands now, if not more.

What I truly want though... Otherland the MMORPG!

Re: Otherland The movie?

Yeah, I guess it head to be a series and I would like it best animated, well, you have to do most scenes animated, for they play in Otherworld.

RPG would be pretty cool, but there lot's alike those already. It's like me wanting to play a game of shent ^^

Dream on.

I don't get it. Why would everything that plays in OtherLAND (!) have to be animated? I mean, there's so much great special effects stuff out there now, that this would probably be the smallest problem.
But it's true - you couldn't possibly make it into a movie without really hurting the story or the characters. Maybe a series but then that's not really the same thing, is it?

Mini-series on TV? Like Gormenghast, maybe, but completely different?

all otherland scenes animated ala animated LOTR (1978) or American Pop then real world gets live action, that would be cool :D

Re: Otherland The movie?

i like the idea of live action otherland. it's constantly emphasized how life-like otherland is. so why kill that with animation?

i agree with the TV series, since it would be way too long for movies, even if it were done as a three-parter like LOTR. but not an ongoing one, just the pride and prejudice and gormenghast kind, that only exist for six episodes or whatever. i would not want someone to come along and massacre the story for the sake of ratings so that they could drag it out for endless lengths of time.

Re: Otherland The movie?

Before they made a Live Action adaptation, they would be better fit to make it animated, and a series or miniseries at that. But even than, Live Action would butcher this perfect story.

Re: Otherland The movie?

I'm actually glad that I'm not the only person who has envisioned an Otherland movie.  I would really like to see it.  I would not like to see the story butchered so if they made just a quadrilogy that was jam-packed with every little detail, it would be one of the greatest things ever.

Re: Otherland The movie?

I don't think it would work as a movie, the main reason being, I guess, that the movie would end up being made for the people who haven't read the books and everything important would get cut. I think it would be entertaining as a animated feature, but Hollywood seems to be leaning away from that. :( Oh well :P

But one of the unique attributes of Otherland is how realistic it is.

Re: Otherland The movie?

Animated would take away from it. Since parts of it would be animated anyway, I think a combination of animation and live action would be the best. And incredible. And I think they could be just one really long movie for each book. Even though every detail is important to the book, this story deserves full length film attention, and not just sci-fi special attention.
Please make it and make it amazing!

Re: Otherland The movie?

I think it'd be an okay animated movie as long as it's done like FFVII: Advent Children (as opposed to, say, Toy Story or Shrek).  But in terms of making it a movie in the first place, it'd take a lot of effort to make sure it's done well.  It'd be hard to convey a lot of ideas, and I'd hate to see it turn out like the Harry Potter movies, with holes everywhere in the plot.  So maybe I'm happier with it just as an awesome book series.  :P

Re: Otherland The movie?

I can see it as a series on the Sci-Fi network. But not as a continuation from the end of the series but a new work based on the books. So many (generated) realities to explore, it could go on for 6-8 seasons!

Hear Hear!! Otherland the MMORPG! Mwah-ha-ha-ha!

In other thoughts though, I will think back to the days of yore when I was but a girl reading through LotR for the third or fourth time thinking to myself how sad it was that that selfsame series could never possibly be rendered on the silver screen.... "Surely it's too long! And how would they encompass the variety of creatures?!" =} Makes me not give up hope that maybe Otherworld could become encapsulated as well, and not terribly diluted.

First post!
Just about to finish reading Volume 1 - I'm hooked!

On the DVD for the movie instead of commentary it should have a Picture in Picture of the characters in their real life environment, using the VR equipment. That'd be great for the bit where Dread kills the Atascos.

Scanny!

Re: Otherland The movie?

I would prefer Otherland to be a series on HBO so nothing would have to cut out. And if live-action isn't an option, I think some sort of animated series would be fine too.

Re: Otherland The movie?

Those series never work, apart from Stargate, which I don't think is much cop anyway. A movie would be fine, provided it was one per book and they were about 3 hours long each. LOTR sorta style.

Pity the Matrix stole so many of Tad's ideas...

Re: Otherland The movie?

Well, they just made a tv series of "Legend of the Seeker" by Terry Goodkind, and some of the storylines were left out or were changed, which is disappointing. I guess some sacrifices have to be made in order to make a movie from any book. Otherland is very complex - there is the real world and there is the network, the sim-worlds, and a lot of different characters. It would be difficult to keep track and at the same time not to confuse the audience. I'd love to see an Otherland movie, though.

I'm with you on this one. I don't know whether HBO is ready to support this project with the appropriate money and time, but I hope they will someday (I certainly don't want another aborted series like the shortened Carnivale--one of the worst cancellation decisions HBO has made). Maybe if A Song of Ice and Fire hits big, Otherland will have a chance. I don't want a movie, or even a series of movies, unless they can get most of the story in without compromise. An HBO series has the most promise.

P.S. I definitely don't want it to be animated. So we differ there.

Re: Otherland The movie?

Hi, I'm new to the series (only about 3/4 thru CoGS), and I'm loving it so far. I think in the right hands, Otherland would make a great adaptation. I don't want to sound like Mr. I-think-random-director-who-just-had-a-popular-movie-would-make-a-great-director-for-a-hypothetical-movie, but I think Neill Blomkamp (District 9 director) would be perfect for the job.

I mean, the guy's incredible at blending fantasy tech seamlessly with reality.

Re: Otherland The movie?

Technical I could imagine two major problems: many completely different settings would be needed making the whole thing incredibly expensive and screen time consuming, and just think about those different visual appearances the main figures will have during the whole story - that will make it way more difficult for the viewers to identify with the characters.

I heard it from different people now who only had the audiobooks that the plot was hard to follow, so to shorten the story without destroying the whole flavour of Otherland would be tough as well (the fun stuff is imho that the plot is long and overly detailed ;)).
