Canadian Smarchmoot: Aug 6-10 2009, WorldCon, Montréal
Ok, so this is two years away still. But hell, if we start creating some buzz for this now, everyone can start saving money and actually manage to be there. And if no Canadian smarchmeet happens before then, it'll be so staggeringly overdue that I'm at the very least expecting each and every single Canadian smarcher to show up. (Y'all hear me?! *prods into the darkest corners of the mint to make certain all Canadians are paying attention*)
I've already seen Miiru and dd say they intend to be there. I'm as of this moment also firmly putting it onto my schedule. (There's some things which might push it off, but not many.) Who else? ...You know you want to!

There's also the World Fantasy Convention in October of 2008. Tad will be there, it says. :)
I'm planning on being there, and Calesta's in Calgary already.
WolrdCon, though, eh? Montreal. It had to be on the other freaking side of the country... *sigh* Two years. Who knows?

I'd like to be at the Fantasy convention, but it doesn't look feasible at the moment (I can try, but no promises, you know?) 2009, though, is two years to save my pennies and angle to go. It'd be so cool to meet the Canadian contingent. :D

Re: Canadian Smarchmoot: Aug 6-10 2009, WorldCon, Montréal
and it's not that far for the NE smarch contingent to get there as well. a carpool or something like that could work possibly.
i hate to be a grown-up, but i'll take this moment to remind all of us U.S. smarchers who're planning on going to be aware of the new passport rules for travel to and from canada. from what i could google up, at least until mid-2008 one won't need a passport to enter/come back from canada. by the time we'd be going to montreal, it seems safe to assume that we'll need passports instead of regular ID/birth certificate. since the new passport rules were announced a year or so ago, the demand and thus the delay time has increased enormously. what i plan on doing is starting the process a year ahead of needing to leave; i figure that should factor in enough bureaucratic delay time to get it to me with a week or so to spare.

I'd certainly consider it, but of course there's only so many other side of the world trips I can manage in a row...

Yeah, but you still have two years to save enough pennies too!
Ooh, this topic almost had me wondering why I wanted to go to Canada next year. Fortunately then somebody posted about World Fantasy to remind me.
Heh, so now Ivo has a choice. He can accompany me next year or the year after! *MG* (This is no promise yet, but I'm going to try to attend both. Will first have to be a grown up and figure out finances and stuff though.)

Less than that. 'cause I've got at least one other side of the world trip as a strong probability for next year already.
I'd actually rather go to World Fantasy, since one Worldcon was enough to tell me that a con dedicated to fantasy-bashing doesn't make for enjoyable panels for me.
However, that's unlikely at this stage unless the other trip doesn't pan out.

Sorry mabs, that was a crosspost. It was aimed at Calesta. :) (Who wouldn't need to cross half the world, only all of Canada.)

Fantasy bashing? That's not what I remember from Interaction at Glasgow. I had quite enjoyable panels about cats and scifi authors. A reading by Carol Berg (very much on the fantasy side of scifi). And tons of other fun stuff.

Re: Canadian Smarchmoot: Aug 6-10 2009, WorldCon, Montréal
heh, it must've just been something about the atmosphere, because I just looked through the programme from LACon expecting to be able to list all the anti-fantasy panels in it, but now they've all gone ;) But I know that at the time, it felt like the (very few) panels with a Fantasy angle to them existed to mock it. But re-reading the programme doesn't show that, so maybe I was just letting my paranoia get the better of me?

I haven't been to Canada in almost 20 years, so I think I may plan for this as well. It's the year before my passport expires, too, so I don't have to worry about the backlog until afterwards.

I've found their website. Doesn't mention much yet, but the blog is asking for volunteers. And I must say I kinda liked being a volunteer last time with Gigi. http://www.anticipationsf.ca/

Hmm, my french insofar as it is existent is a bit rusty. But I just really loved having a purpose the last time. Just running around and bugging people if they had already finished the stuff we needed to fetch. The last time it was highly appreciated too.

Sweet! Montreal is a direct flight from Richmond, as of now. Doesn't get much better than that.
I've never been to Canada before, and here I'm already planning two trips there. Exciting!

What is this WorldCon which is coming to Montreal? Is Tad going to be there? If so, amazing! I live in Montreal so finally getting a chance to hang with him would be fantastic. If he is not coming to Montreal, that is okay. I will most likely check it out anyway.

Yeah, WorldCon is the Sci-Fi Fantasy Convention. Your city is going to be over-run by Klingons!

Cool, Montreal over-run by Klingons!!! I have a co-worker who would love that. We already decided we would check out these conventions if they ever came our way. Rest assured, I will be there! Will there be Cylons also? I can only hope.
Thank you for the info Marian.
