Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

And another question: What happens if I subscribe to a topic?

Do I get emails whenever someone posts there or what?

Re: Notes on the migration from Shadowmarch to here.

I subbed this topic, but no email after my last post. I may not have waited long enough, so we'll see. The main thing that I can see about subscribing is that you can use it to watch your favorite topics. There's a link at the bottom of the index page -- "show your subscribed topics" -- which you can use to get a list of just the ones you're watching.

Could be a handy feature.

In profile, privacy there's the option to "Include post in subscription e-mails." - so I guess subscriptions do indeed send out emails.
The system probably is smart enough not to send emails if you yourself reply though, figuring that you already know about that reply.

Re: Notes on the migration from Shadowmarch to here.

Btw, I realize I should give a shout-out to Sahi. The reason The Meeting Place forum is filled with some old topics is because she started the neighbourhood thread to keep track of such, and so I could quickly refind those threads and move them there. (In fact, probably the entire existence of the forum is thanks to Sahi; at least, she's been most persistent with requesting it, I think.)
So: Thanks Sahi! :)

(I also intend to every so often - whenever I'm particularly bored (like just now *moves over two dozen threads*) - dig through old threads to see if I can refind some other meeting threads to move to that forum. If you happen to stumble across any which definitely belong there as well, send me a PM and I'll move them.)

Unfortunately no. :( The main website is on port 80, and that's ASP.NET on IIS, while this forum is PHP on Apache. We did mention the non-standard port would catch some people at work (including myself at my current project, I suspect), but... :/

Although! I didn't know as much about the current server setup at that point as I do now. There might be a way with the DNS setup. I'll have that looked into, but it could be a couple of weeks before anything is known for certain.

Well, I ended up setting up my own reverse proxy to solve this for me.
I'd post a link, but I suspect flood control is probably IP based like it was with UBB, so it'd become pretty useless with more than one user at a time.

As far as I can see, it's actually user based, checking purely on datetime of the last post by the current user.

That's terrible!, how will members of the same household be able to have flood control fights anymore?!?
That's completely ruined my fun for next time I visit Ceywren...hehe.

Re: Notes on the migration from Shadowmarch to here.

There is a lot more scrolling needed on this board than on Shadowmarch.

Comparing http://shadowmarch.com/bin/ultimatebb.cgi and the equivalent page here, http://www.tadwilliams.com:9080/bbs/ , the new version is longer. Part of the reason is that the graphic on the top is much, much larger. It's also because of the Kurt Vonnegut quote, a larger font size, having more forums (16 vs 13), and moving the works forums on top of the other forums also makes a big difference.

I like having the three extra forums, but I do not like all the extra scrolling. When I visit the site on my laptop, without a mouse, it is a pain to scroll so much. If the "Tad Williams" text at the very top was moved down a couple of inches, you wouldn't have to have that inch of mostly blank space at the top. And is there really a need for the Vonnegut quote if it's already in Tad's sig? I actually like the larger font size on the rest, and I do like the concept of having discussion of Tad's works come before the community pages, so I won't complain about those changes.

Re: Notes on the migration from Shadowmarch to here.

I agree with most of that, but I don't think there's much chance of getting the design trimmed down. (The Vonnegut quote is easier to remove, but such content decisions are up to Tad & Deb. At least it's already hidden on all the other forum pages, because the way this board works, it was originally included there as well. (View source to see.))
What you can do if you use Firefox or another gecko-based browser is to customize the design to your own tastes. To do this, create a file called userContent.css in the chrome/ directory of your profile (or open it if it already exists) and - for example - paste in the following lines:

Code:

@-moz-document url-prefix("http://tadwilliams.com:9080/bbs/") {
  table#Table1 { display: none !important; }
}

...and poof, no more Tad eyes following you around on the message board. (For the tadwilliams.com domain. www.tadwilliams.com would remain as is with the above code, so you can toggle based on mood.) :)

I agree as well, and as Aan says, this was a decision from Deb and Tad and unlikely to be changed in the near future. You can thank Aan for the magic that took the intro box text off the other pages in the forums (thank you thank you thank you Aan!!). As for the graphic banners across the top, well, see this post. Could be chihuahuas. Thank our mozilla magic man again for the way to browse as you see fit. *g* (That is tres kewl, Aan.)

& yeah, the forum list expanded mainly due to the works needing to expand since we're no longer Shadowmarch oriented and "other works" wasn't going to cut it. Sorry about the extra scrolling, Firs.

Actually, this brings up an interesting (to me, anyway) discussion. Several years ago I recall seeing some study or other that said surfers preferred sites that had fewer sub-pages and kept most of the content on the upper pages -- ie preferred scrolling to clicking/"drilling down". That was before laptops became as ubiquitous as they are now. I suppose laptops change that preference a bit. Would you say that now it is better to have shorter pages and click through more, then? Just idly curious...

No, longer pages are actually even more preferable nowadays than they used to be, for various reasons:
1) Larger default screen resolutions.
2) Faster internet connections mean a "long" page still load swiftly, so the largest hit in loading a page is making the initial connection. The fewer connections to be made, the better.
3) Even the most novice internet users have grown used to scrolling. It used to be that content underneath the fold was never seen by them, but now everyone knows to scroll.

Also, most laptops scroll quite well. Might not be set up by default everywhere, but I know synaptics trackpads (one of the most common kinds) are surpremely easy to configure to treat a sliding motion along the right-hand side as a scroll (with speed of the slide determining how far you scroll, which actually works better than limited mouse-wheel scrolls).

Re: Notes on the migration from Shadowmarch to here.

*G*

I'm pretty happy with scrolling; especially compared with going hunting on sub-pages. On message boards it's not as obvious, but on sites like, oh, say, the United States Postal Service, I get so frustrated that really obvious links aren't on the front page - like holiday hours, or procedures for businesses to put holiday mail on hold. It usually takes me three or four clicks to get to a page that has what I'm looking for there.

As far as this site goes, I am quite thrilled with the board's top page, and because of the awesomeness of viewing new posts, I do most of my topic-reading either through that or through the active topics.

So... question... might've missed this or simply not understood it if I read it... what's the 9080? I only see it when I'm on the message board... is it a port number or something?
