Help me, Gods of Shadowmarch, your my only hope...
Howdy guys.
I received a PM off a new user called James Scott today. He signed up a week ago and still canīt post and is wondering how long the whole thing will take.
Of course, I know its to do with the infamous SpamBot invasion and how Matt is trying to get TadWilliams.com up and running but I was wondering if anyone <cough>mantidae </cough> may be able to nudge this along a bit for him? Maybe?
*puppydog eyes*
Thanks from Genland.

wow, we must be getting very dedicated smarchers these days then - if I'd had to wait 2 months before I could post, I'd have given up, dog or no dog ;)

Re: Help me, Gods of Shadowmarch, your my only hope...
That's the best we can do right now. I'm sure the spambot problem will be addressed by the new software. Recently here, however, we've had invasions which take the Who's Online pages up to 4 at a time nearing 100 on the site at once. With things in transition (& no, I still have not heard a go-date), patience is the best counsel. Yeah, I know that's not an answer people want to hear, but that's what we've got.
Hate to say it, but I've personally gone to bat for a number of these folks who were persistent in trying to get on, managed to get them in the gates and then... well other than a post or two, they disappeared entirely. Which to my mind isn't much different than lurking in Guestdom.
Obviously that's not everyone, though -- sisterdew is a good example!

not only did i wait that long,i was even refused registration, cos matt obviously thought i was a bot - one email later my soul was doomed all he can really do is be patient-either matt will approve him or smarch moves

Most of those Guests are bots the vast majority of the time. I know all you can see is "Guest," but the Mantises get to see IPs as well, and I can assure you they are bots. Even when you see them trying to "Reply" it doesn't mean anything other than they've clicked the link to the reply window. Last time I checked a big invasion it was from Yahoo.
I understand that not all of those guests are bots. Some of the non-bots are people who prefer not to sign in and be seen; some are people patiently waiting approval. Can't really tell from the Magic Mirror.

I didn't mean the guests, but those who're already registered - and if you look at the profile, most of the time you can guess whether they're a bot or a real person.

Re: Help me, Gods of Shadowmarch, your my only hope...
*nod* I get what you mean. But for instance right now 15 out of 18 guests are bots from the same IP. Guests themselves are not 'clickable' for profiles, so I'm not sure how you can tell they're registered.
Other than them getting in touch via PM, it's hard to tell when someone is in Smarch Limbo.
ETA: And if you can click their profile, just seeing them in the Magic Mirror reading or posting still doesn't tell us whether that person is just looking around at the topics and considering posting something or if they truly cannot post.
Frex, I've seen members I know for certain can post (they do it all the time) sitting on a "reply to" slot and they never end up posting a reply to the topic. I think many of those are of the "thought I would post but changed my mind" variety (I've done that myself many times).
Anyway, my point is you can't really tell much from watching the Magic Mirror.

registered and logged in, I mean. Because log in they can (and send PMs, which is kind of weird... they can't post, but they can send PMs).

I've had the same trouble with a new member that pm'ed me. I got in touch with both Matt and Tad and nothing happened.
I just hope our ghost smarchers can be patient.

Let's save Smarch Free or Die for the third board sequel.

Does anybody know if they're holding off accepting new users until the new site comes round? I just had an email by a new user asking that question.

Re: Help me, Gods of Shadowmarch, your my only hope...
No timetable yet, though things are still in the works and moving right along. Some of the delay has been due to the project having changed hands a couple of times. Here's what Deborah sent me recently:
"Well, re the site development, please tell people that it's being handled by a San Jose company, Baytech Web Design, because it's a big job and it couldn't be done without lots of work involved."
As far as maintenance on the current Smarch boards goes, I really don't know. I am assuming Matt is still on watch (and I saw him post around here somewhere fairly recent). Don't have an answer about new memberships, but observationally I'd say patience is the best, though perhaps not very satisfying, answer.
Think I'll crosspost this in the announcement topic, too.
