Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: SEARCH Button

Good question!

I responded on the FEEDBACK PLEASE thread.  There's now a Search option in the links in the upper-left corner, by the "my profile" link.

Enjoy!

Thank you, Matt.

Now, can you help me with my homework?

Re: SEARCH Button

hmmm....is it just me or does the search only result in 2004 topics?

Re: SEARCH Button

I don't know if that's what's wrong, but I have also wondered. I did some searches that should have pulled up more results than they did.

Still, I guess it's better than nothing...

Re: SEARCH Button

have you tried a specific search that would yield very few results of which some of them should be from this year? It might be that results are truncated to a manageable number (and then only returning the oldest ones). I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know if that is the case or not.

yalahii.

Re: SEARCH Button

No, there really seems to be a lack of search results between July 2004 and October 2006. (Try for example searching for "dogly" in community. One very recent hit, the rest all in the first half of 2004.)

My first guess was that search requires threads to be indexed, and that indexing only ran while the search was turned on, so that all posts from when it was turned off can't be found - but that isn't it, since search was turned off way before 2004 (if I'm not very mistaken).
So, ehm, no explanation for this (could indexing be a _very slow_ background process that's still running, and only got up to July 2004 so far?) but (unless that last guess was correct) it'll definitely need looking at.

Re: SEARCH Button

Hi all,

I've rebuilt all the index files and stat files that I have access to through the board's control panel.

A quick search on posts by Tad in "The Real #5" turns up recent results, so I believe search should be working properly now.  Let me know if you still notice problems.

Best!

Matt

Re: SEARCH Button

Seems to work better. At least for me; I'm able to pull up stuff from 04-06, now. Pretty nifty. I wish this search thing had been available the past three years!

Also: what causes it to not index? I mean, what caused the loose connection?

Re: SEARCH Button

Hey Aan, is there any way to change the search functionality so you can find the exact post you are looking for? It's not really all that useful to know that the post you are looking for is in a certain Mint room...

Re: SEARCH Button

Yes: in the last selectbox ("Show results as"), select "Posts" rather than "Topics".

I'm glad you can not read any better, Sahi!

I would never have noticed this on my own.

Another shiny feature, Aan!
