The history of Shadowmarch
Yes, you've guessed it (if you're on smarch long enough to have seen me discussing this before) I'm going to make another attempt at putting the history to paper.
I already have a bunch of notes on the history of smarch before the terrible conflagration, but not many on recent history.
My plan is to do a lot of research before November and then write the actual stuff as my NanoNovel for this year. I've no idea how far I'll come, but I'm sure at least something will get written.
And now for the reason I'm posting this. What I need is ideas for stuff to put in it. Especially the more recent events (i.e. everything that can still be found on the site right now).
A lot has happened, also stuff that I might not be aware of. So what I need is topics and a link to the topic where the actual event took place, so I can extract all the information I need.
As for what kind of topics, anything that has added some slang to our vocabulary or has otherwise had an impact on us as a community. For example the story behind the jellybean factory would be a nice addition. If such an event took place in several topics, please provide links to the ones that are important to figure out the actual story.
As for what's already included, here's a link to the history as is written so far. It's a word document. It's mostly notes with a collection of links. The links in it might work, but they might not. I can't remember whether I've changed the links from the old smarch ones to the archive ones. *is too lazy to actually open the document right now*
Anyway, thanks in advance for your help!
Yalahii.

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
Nice list.
I think Pandy would be very, very surprised at how many times he's mentioned in that archive. Really. I'll tell him someday. And he'll be shocked.
Xavie/Xavia will also be surprised that she's mentioned, I'm sure.
There's no mention of Lian, and there needs to be. And Rook played a bigger role in the earlier days than what the list indicates. I would expand those two's respective parts.
More recent stuff? Definitely the jellybean stuff, although I have no idea how that started.
And also the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn group re-read, which has taken up 39 topics and still isn't yet finished. It was Olaf's idea, but the main participants have been: *Ylvs (every chapter) *Neemo (every chapter) *Cyan (every chapter) *Me (every chapter) *JustCharlotte (many chapters) *Queen Sanasu (many chapters) *Ceywren (many chapters) *Elbarad (many chapters) *Terelia (many chapters)
How about Smarch's Anniversary party last year?
Forum 9 doesn't seem to be mentioned. I think that's a must. At least, I didn't see it while browsing the list.
That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure I'll think of more later.

Maybe "No 'H' Day", and "No 'I' Week", or whatever it was.

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
Thanks. Maybe I should prod Peter to help me create an archive of smarch after the crash (at least something I can search locally).

Oh. The "Fourness". I wasn't there, but it was muchly impresive. Four mints in one night. Gotta be a record, at least in Smarch's later years. I do recall, though, those earliest days (first couple of weeks), where, when you went to reply to someone saying hi, your reply would be, like, six pages later.

We'll see. :) If nothing else I'll just have to go stalk him for real. *has visions of hunting all of Austria, asking for a guy named Peter*

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
There have been a few births, deaths and marriages, does the history have a registry?
I was looking to see if the short story contest was in there?
just a thought.

Perhaps a record of each of the Smarchmoots (although I don't know if they count, since they took place off the boards)...

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
I'll add that if someone else makes a list of them... ;) I think it's something that COULD be in the history, since meetings are an important part of smarchly life.

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
It might be a good idea to trawl for Smoots in the Community. I could list the ones *I've* been to, but that certainly isn't all of them.
And the ConJose moot deserves special mention, I think. :)

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
Trouble is, there is SO much history, I can not possibly finish even finding the topics about them before November. I'll just stick with transforming everything I already have links for into notes about what the story should contain (sort of like plotwise). So in the November draft will only be stuff that I can find easily. (It'll take enough time as it is to just create notes.)

Please tell me your story will contain at least one token pun. Make it ironic if that makes you feel better.

"Token pun"? That has a nice ring to it.

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
I'm sorry Stuart, but I'm horrible at puns. But it being the history of smarch there must be one in there somewhere, intended or not. ;)

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
Wow, I just looked at the document and it wasn't quite as I had it memorized. I'm actually stunned that we went through so many Mints in order to pick out all the major topics.
Not quite what I had in mind for November. So I'll have to do a LOT of research.

It started like this: Many moons ago, I was relating the latest evil perpetrated upon me by my employer (the 'EPC'), so Ceywren threw black jellybeans at them because nobody likes the black ones (except Ceywren, of course). The black jellybeans soon became the Black Jellybeans of Doom (tm), which inspired others to come up with different colors of jellybeans with various properties. Then one night, Ceywren, Hiragana, Sam, Genisis and I decided we really needed a definitive list, and thus the Jellybean Factory was born.

'K, that's the way I remember it. Which means Ceywren will prolly come by and correct me.

Re: The history of Shadowmarch
Okay, here's my story (and I'm sticking too it).
'twas about a year ago, I staggered into the Mint, a Mint on steriods. Everything was large. The mood was ugly. The room had existed for over two weeks and no one was visiting.
Having just returned from a piratin' adventure, I rounded up the scurviest crew of female pirates I could find (including Cyan, Ceywren and Hiragana), and set sail for the Valley of the Pretty Pink Ponies. We ran up the skull and crossbones, roamed the waters of Smarch, in our good ship The Quiller's Mint, striking fear in the hearts of all (really good looking) Smarchers, drinking, pillaging, raiding, and generally taking what we wanted.
The Mint has never been the same. a-r-r-r.
