Did we ever tell you your kids are brilliant Tad? Guess we did, just don't tell them we said so until they are totally ruined (as in spoiled, incorrigible and beyond any hope of recovery) anyway.

Oh, forgot -- Devon, of course.

Of course you tell em to be an elf.....
How many chicks did you see falling over the dwarves?
hmm for that matter I didn't see any baby birds falling over the elves either.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
Well, it depends on how tall you wind up.
It's no good wanting to be a dwarf if you're six-foot-two or something. Well, I suppose you could say you were a pituitary-giant dwarf. But it kind of spoils the effect.
Busy as all hell today. Much to do -- household chores, book work, being wrestled and pounded by children. Oh, and licked by foul-breathed beagles and poodles while trying to do the aforementioned household chores.
Hi, Simcha. I'm in and out all the time. You'll see -- it's not that exciting.

What do you mean "it's not all that exciting."?
For me to be on a board with you, is very exciting..... You see, you saved me from a very bad time I was having a few years ago....
I was in a very deep depression, and a friend of mine who knows I love computers, Sci-fi books, and the internet, turned me onto Otherworld.
The way you dragged us into that series, locked us in, so that we couldn't escape.... It brought me out of myself, and sucked me into your world.... It was the best therapy I had found....
So to be able to be on the boards with the man who created it... well it is exciting to me.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
Don't worry Simcha, he's got himself a board full of groupies, but somehow he's not quite caught onto it yet. ;)
Although people coming from all over the place to see him and hear him talk should have been a good clue. ;)

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
Tad, I've got a question about writing, if you don't mind.
I've recently been writing a fantasy series, and world creation is really a bear. There are a couple theories out there: 1)Research everything in as much detail as possible and then write from what you know; 2)Write, and research as needed. Obviously these are two exremes, but at least they give me an idea of where to begin.
What's your take on world creation?
I think the fact that you have this and actually respond is the coolest thing! Thanks.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
I disagree with the second extreme. That's not quite the extreme. It is also possible to write without researching. It's probably not possible to do that and still write good stories, but it is possible. ;)
[edit]Oh, and I'd also guess that over time you would evolve from the first to the second (your second, not my own suggestion). As you write more and have researched more, it becomes less necessary to research everything and anything up front (as there already is a lot you know by that point).[/edit]

Most of the stuff I research never makes it near my writing. I just do it for the hell of it :)

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
I think it deprnds on your writign methods...some people are good with super-detailed worlds and background etc...some are better at writing as they go along...
I like ahveing a framework to work within, but my problem comes from getting too involved with the details and lose the story somewhere...8P But I'm lazy also and prefer to write then research as need though it tends to interrupt the flow of my writing....8P

can we get a chat room? I think that would rock! we could then all talk to each other in real time.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
A little bit of all those, sv. As Sahi says, the more you research in the course of projects, the more you know. That doesn't mean you don't have to do any more research eventually, but it means you get better and better about knowing WHAT to research, and you also have a larger field of knowledge and familiarity to choose from when you're creating.
Let me make a suggestion. Make your imaginary cultures as much like real-world cultures as you can, and then read at least one book on each of those cultures. Also, try to keep the technological levels close, or have a good reason why.
Let me come back to this when I'm not going out the door (as I am in the next five minutes now) and recommend a few books that I've found useful in providing a historical/anthropological overview for world-creation.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
To all,
Thanks for all your input. It's truly appreciated.
To Tad,
Yeah, that would be great! I asked one of my anthropology professors for just that, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet, and it's been over a year. Besides, I'm sure your recomendations will be more applicable to the subject matter. If they worked for you, well, that's just about as good a qualifier as can be hoped for.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.
somewhere at home I've got a big file i was sent by someone on world-building that was written by some Lady Author whose name I forget now...8P
I can take a look when I get home if you want to take a look at it...I have't look at it in maybe 2 years msyelf, but I've done so much gaming i don't tend to need a lot of help with world-building...staying on track is a whole 'nother issue...8P

I know the file you're talking about, Ren; I have a printout somewhere that I made like ten years ago when I was on AOL. It's been very handy in the past. Too bad I can't remember her name either. (Want to say Holly Lisle?)

Cool thing about forums, though, is that people in different time zones can communicate more effectively and there is a record of previous conversations so that newcomers can go back and see what's gone before. I took great enjoyment in retelling Tad's story about his son wanting to be a ladies man through math and manners. Might have missed that otherwise (and it's such a great story, that would have been disappointing).
