Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

Dogs to the left of me.  Dogs to the right of me.  I must get out of the house for a few minutes.

I'm trying to work, but between barking at every falling leaf or passing cloud, and providing examples of apparently inefficient toilet training, these animals are making me crazy.

Still, life could be worse.  I could have more dogs.

Continue with your cheerful game conversation.  I'll just stand here grimacing, knee deep in poodle and beagle.

How could that possibly be bad?  I rather prefer the company of dogs over people. Well, somewhat.

Hey, I don't think I've ever posted here before!  Nothing like time and boredom to explore the boards.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

Poor Tad. I feel your pain. One of the neighbours apparently received some small representative of the canine world for Christmas- puppy or small yappy dog, I'm not sure which- and this thing has not quit barking for the three solid days I've been home from New York.

It's yapping when I go to sleep.

It's yapping when I wake up again- early, generally, because of the noise.

It's yapping right now. I doubt the thing ever pauses for breath.

I am this close to finding a coupon for a muzzle and taping it to the neighbouring door.

But you're right- it could be worse. It could be my dog.

I think I shall go cuddle my (quiet!) cats.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

Tad, I know your into cartoons and comics and such. I've heard that your working on comics and cartoons, so I was just wondering what is your favorite comic, cartoons, or anime?

I would probably have to say my favorite cartoon/anime are ones like Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, and Inuyasha.

I do admit Inuyasha is overrated, but I still enjoy it. I like .Hack but its not on enough for me to get a watching routine, so saying if I like it or hate it wouldn't be exactly fair.

Oh - This for everybody: Watch any film by Hayoa Miyazaki film, like Spirited Away, Naussica of the Valley of the Wind, and Princess Mononoke.

I watched Spirited Away yesterday, I loved it! Is it from a Japanese fairytale or something? It had the fairytale kinda feel to it. I still need to get my hands on Princess Mononoke!

Not yet. Heard it was great though. I think Spirited Away is a Studio Ghibli interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. I heard that, anyway, and watched it. It could very easily be true.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

saw princess mononoke a long time ago. and by a long time ago i mean like a year. or a week. not sure anymore. in any case, i saw it. i have no experience with animes of any sort other than that three months in which my sister was obsessed with sailer moon, so i refuse to provide some sort of critical analysis of it. i have no idea how it compares to the rest of the world, but my ignorant self completely enjoyed every minute of it.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

That's one of the greatest compliments something can get. Hating the genre, but loving the film.

I only have three other Studio Ghibli films - The Cat Returns, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle.

The Cat Returns just looks utterly delightful, the second in the series. It's also the only one of Ghibli's films not directed by Miyazaki, I think. Kiki's looks good, but not great, and Howl's Moving Castle is an adaption of a novel that is like Wizard of Oz, or so the reviews have said. It still looks neat though.

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

Of Miyazaki's Films I've Seen; My neighbor Totoro, Princess Monnonke, and Spirited Away.
Sadly I missed Howl's when it came through earlier in the year.

Currently I'm on a kick for finding an watching Anime that wasn't about super-powere characters and/or didn't have the Whole Big Eyes, Small Mouth thing going on. So far my favorites in his Category have been; Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (The BEST Anime ever made), Planetes (A story about people who clean up Orbital Trash and their hopes and dreams.) and Gasaraki (Though gasaraki's ending sucked the majority of it was fairly realistic including the combat mechs that were being used.

In general I've gotten very, very tired of the BESM anime where everyone screams  excitedly about everything or cries fountains of tears...the limit has been hit on this stuff and I really think Anime has a LOT of potential that is wasted on crap.

BTW If you pay attention to Music in Anime then GiTS:SAC, the first season has some AWESOME opening music...I even like the closing music...8) Second season is the same singer but I don't like the music. Fortunatley the story still rocks.

*excited* I can give you a v long list indeed XD *addicted* You should definitely watch Wolf's Rain (google it if you need info about it), Gungrave was pretty neat too, until about halfway when they threw in "beyond the grave", Gundam Wing is okay too, though I've heard Gundam Seed is better. RahXephon is good too if you like mecha. It has a high wtf level though ;) I liked Madlax too, but I'm not sure if you'll like it since you're looking for serious anime and this has fantasy elements in it. Aaaaaand, Hellsing! Classic.

I only saw the first Ghost in the Shell movie, need to get my hands on that second one...!

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

Well, Studio Ghibli is not all Hayao Miyazaki; the very famous "Grave of the Fireflies" and some others were not directed by him. Also, the upcoming "Earthsea" project will be directed by his son, I think. (I'm so excited about this! I really believe that Studio Ghibli is the one film company that might do Ursula K. LeGuin's ideas justice.)

And "Spirited Away" is an original conception of Miyazaki's. Of course, Alice must be a strong inspiration, but so are Japanese and European myths. IMO, it can't be reduced to an interpetation of "Alice".

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

I love all the Ghibli stuff.  Haven't seen a one that I haven't really enjoyed, and some are absolutely fabulous.  I watch a lot of the Adult Swim stuff -- I submitted a script to them, in fact, but never really heard anything.

In comics, I like everything from superhero stuff -- well, some, esp. Alan Moore -- to Dan Clowes and Chris Ware and the other usual suspects.  Persepolis.  Lynda Barry.  Ben Katchor.

Actually, I could list comic creators I like for days...

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

I think Studio Ghibli's strongest point is that they are one of the few anime studios to elevate Anime to the level of real art as opposed to more of the same churned-out and re-hashed stuff. Major props to them for proving that animation doesn't have to be for children...8)

Completely agreeing with you here!  Spirited Awaywas so graceful and disturbing... it was wonderfully, comfortably, alien.  Aaaah!  Sweet sweet brain relief.

BTW, Howl's Moving Castle is adapted from the book by Diana Wynne Jones.  Someday I hope to wander into a bookstore and find it there... much like my encounter with Shadowmarch.  That was some double-take whiplash crazy madness.

Happy New Year!

Re: DOGBLOG: Beyond Poodledome.

Great news everybody! Starting January, every Thursday night will have a Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki film. The first showing in early evening will be the english dub, while the later showing is the original japanese cast.

Talk about fabulous coincidence.
