Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

Nothing´s been planned yet but that´s definitely a good idea. However, I think it´s way too early to make concrete plans at the moment. I for one won´t even know when I might arrive in Köln on the day until March 17 or 18. The best time to set something up seems to be in the days immediately before the reading.

I don't think I'll be able to come. Well coming there isn't the problem, it's just that I can't get back...

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

While I am brandnew here, I have been a huuuuuge fan of Tad Williams' work for many years now. I have re-read MST so many times now, it's not funny. I just finished Shadowmarch, and was really thrilled to find out about the reading. My spouse and I are definitely going to come, and we'd be delighted to go out for a drink afterwards.

My spouse is hoping you'll still speak in English, Tad, because she's American and her German needs some improvement still. ;)

My friend Michael and I (plus some other people) coming along with us, would also join the drink afterward.

Damm, really wish I could come...

Anyone know where I can get a driver's licence + car in just over a month?

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

That´s simple. Find someone else who has a driver´s licence and a car and persuade them to come along. If necessary, make them an offer they can´t refuse.

Well, that seems to become a great evening.
My birthday is on the 17th and I originally planned to give a party on the 19th - that is cancelled now, but I'm convinced to have a party like no other ... YES I'D LIKE TO COME ALONG AS WELL!!!!

Okay so here it is: Any Dutchies (or even Belgians) driving there? If you do you will most likely pass my location in a very short distance. This means: coming from the west: NO detour!!!.

Sorry, I can't drive distances that long. By the time I'd get there, they'd have to surgically remove me from the car. After one hour my shoulders start cramping. Try looking into going by ICE. If you book it up front (more than a week ahead) it saves you 50%!

Which isn't a bad idea on itself. It is just the fact that I live in just about the worst for doing that.

They even want me to leave before I get there if I want to be back on the same day. (Which is quite neccessary because of my plans the day after.)

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

My wife and I have decided to come to Köln, too.  Our current plan is to arrive early afternoon on the day of the reading, spend the night at a hostel or hotel, explore the city a bit the next day, and get a train back that afternoon/evening.

Sounds like a nice weekend.  I was in Köln once, at the station for an hour changeover while coming back from Brussels. Turned around and said "what the hell?" when I saw the huge Dom.  I definitely have wanted to go back for a visit ever since.

we could do that in Vienna as well... it´s  the peak of lenting season, one day before Good Friday (for those who care), but a little chat would be nice, nonetheless.

any non austrian smarchers coming? to lure you, i still think that the last reading a couple of years ago was for free... or maybe only for those who already were in the building hours before the reading started... ;)

Here in our house, with dogs who can't go out because it's raining, and cats who never go out, it's the peak of the Linting Season.

It's a bad time to be a guy who wears mostly black, I promise you.

Hey, do we have to worry about Köln selling out?

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

The Gürzenich is pretty big, room for several hundred people, so most likely not. As far as I can tell from the koelnticket website, they still have tickets but I might just give them a call tomorrow to make sure.

Related news: I might try the staying awake at train stations option, because of a change of plans the day after.

Edit: There's an 'if': if I can lure somebody to come with me.

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

Why did that not happen six years ago when i lived in Bonn?
Oh, and i just read a review of War of the Flowers in the ZEIT. To be reviewed in the ZEIT is quite something. Another proof of how much the Germans like him.

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

Hi all,
I just bought my ticket for Tad's reading in Cologne. I'm not quite sure yet whether I'm going to drive home (2,5 hrs by car) the same night or stay at a hotel - while actually Tad's suggestion about joining him for a beer afterward seems to make the decision much easier... ;-)
Anyway - if there's somebody else from the Heidelberg/Mannheim/Ludwigshafen region to go to Cologne, we could save money by driving there together. Just mail me.

Ah... one question: I'm wondering how Tad is going to manage the signing of his books after the event, i.e. wouldn't it be too impertinent to bring on all 4 Otherland volumes? AND the MST volumes? AND War of Flowers? AND Tailchaser's Song? (just kidding a bit...) If all people do that, our beer order will be placed at 8 o`clock in the morning, I guess...

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

I say beer first, and then we watch the progression of Tad's signature!

As for number of things to sign, I have no idea what kind of rules there are.  My plan is to bring one thing.  To me, the value in a signature is to mark the actual event, so to do it more than once seems redundant.  But that's just me.

Re: Tad Williams reads in Cologne on March 19th

At the reading in Berlin was a guy who brought a big backpack full of books to get signed. He must have had everything Tad has ever written in at least two different editions in there. Took him several minutes just to unpack all the books and put them on the table. It was quite the spectacle.
