I just started Ship of Destiny.  I haven't wanted to, its been sitting on my shelf staring at me.  I don't want to read it because then I'll be finished.  I don't want it to end :(

i'm just trying to get through the second book in the Liveship series. I love her writing, but this series, as intriguing as the characters are, move much more slowly for me than the Farseer trilogy or he Fool's trilogy. which, by the way, i am waiting desperately for the third book to get into my library so i can finish the series.

ooo... I know completely what you mean.  Luckily, I haven't hit that point with Hobb yet.  I think I still have 5 books to go.

That's what I thought... until I finished the series.  Trust me, trust in Hobb.  You won't regret it.

STOP!! Hazel do not read anymore of the Fool series until you have read the Liveship Traders series. Trust me. In book two of the Fool series there is some interconnectedness that will hurt your enjoyment of the liveship series. at least it did for me.Take the advice of someone who did this the wrong way, and read her books in order. They are actually meant to be read that way.

Re: the Library

well since the subject's come up already: what do you guys prefer? do you read a series in the order they're supposed to go in, or just randomly?

i'm an "in order" kind of person, but i have a friend who has a deep scorn for reading series in the order in which they're presented and always makes a point of reading them out of sync.

just curious about the smarch-wide additude towards this.

Re: the Library

I'm usually a very anal in order person myself.  But I read the Hobb trilogys in the wrong order and I think (although I haven't finished the last liveship book, so I reserve the right to change my mind) that I can survive my life knowing I did it the wrong way....

Re: the Library

I had no idea I was reading them out of order.  I tend to read trilogies in order, but didn't realize that Liveship had anything to do (beyond same world) with Fools...  but the problem is that I am deeply engrossed in the Fool books, and have started my way through Golden Fool... and I don't really want to stop...

I did see soemthing somewhere that referenced the LiveShips and it was clear that whoever saw them felt the magic or whatever to be some sort of abomination...  and I wondered at the time why she had written books about them - but then chalked it up to Hobb writing about cultural differences and perceptions.

Hmmm.... conflicted now.  See, my TBR pile is so large at this point and none of the LiveShip books are physically present yet on my side table...  I think my husband would kill me if I went out and bought three more books....

oh dear...  I must ponder....

Re: the Library

Maybe you could pick them up from the Library, Hazel. Trust me. You have to read them in order. The way Hobb unveils the mythology of her world is seriously spoiled by taking them out of order.

And I've picked up the Tawny Man series to reread at nighttime. Though I may have to go put in some afternoon reading as well. :)

I don't own the other trilogies yet, but I did get them through the library in order.

I'm kind of a freak about order. I was looking at another author recently but decided not to read his stuff because the first novel in his first triolgy was out of print atm. I'll check him out again later.

:)

Re: the Library

I read the MST series out of order. Actually, it took me another year or two to even realize there were two books that came before TGAT! I was young and foolish... but it didn't even marr the experience of reading the first two, even after I had read the ending. Sure I had read the synopsis at the beginning of TGAT, but actually seeing the Norns sack Naglimund was much more impressive!

Re: the Library

I am sad to report that I have no faith in my local libraries.  They suck and never seem to have any scifi/fantasy books I would want to read.  And ordering hasn't been working either (see above point about suckage).  I will check again, but I was seriously spoiled by the libraries up in San Francisco....

*continues pondering*

But thanks for the advice folks!  :)

Don't ponder too long because halfway through golden fool is where the liveship mystery ends. It is major spoilage and has really slowed down the books for me. now that i know what i know the liveship series holds little tension.

but is still an enjoyable read. my last warning. :)

Re: the Library

hmmmmm, I still kind of disagree with you fangler.  To me its more about the story & the characters ~ a little less with the mythology ~ but maybe that's what spoiling things did to my POV.  I still find it a very interesting story & am quite anxious to see how it all ends....

I kind of liked having some of the end of the story in place before reading this part.

I will say I am in a cantakerous mood & willing to argue with anyone so you may not want to pay attention to me right now.

why? that's the best time to pay attention to anyone. :)

and to me, knowing how the story ends kinda spoils the getting there. sure the characters are still great, and sure the various weavings of the plotlines are interesting, but i often find myself saying, "yeah yeah yeah, just get to the part where blah blah blah happens," because i know it is going to happen and i fell the thousand pages before me are just in the way. but in a good way. :)

Re: the Library

i agree with you fangler.
i like to read in order.  especailly the first time through.
the subsequent times i may bounce around a bit, but that's because i know the plot and i'm interested in rereading particular parts.

*gasp*  did i just say 'i agree with you fangler'??

Re: the Library

I didn't hear it, but I sure as heck SAW it!!

Well, I've stopped reading Golden Fool.  I realized that the situation was probably just as fangler described above and I didnt want the LiveShip series spolied for me that way.  Now I'm reading magazines and the backs of cereal cartons to tide me over until I go on vacation this weekend and can start reading the books I want to review for the Shadowline!

Thanks folks!

Re: the Library

I'm partway into Golden Fool. this is the second time. I read it just a few months ago but had a delay waiting for the library to send me the third. Finally I bought the series. Hopefully I'll get to the third book soon. :)
