Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Going to be starting up a new Role-playing campaign as GM. This time Legend of the Five Rings, on of my all-time favorite games for ease of playing, flexibility and fun. Coure it's tough to geta really good crowd of people that really know how to roleplay the Samurai and Japanese cultural mentality. For those not familiar, L5R the RPG is based on a still-popular CCG of the same name. It's set in a fantastical world called Rokugan, which is filled with Sword-wielding Samurai, Spirit-calling Shugenja, Sharp-tounged Courtiers and Horrific Oni, demonic beasts from the darkest Hells. Rokugan culture revolves around Seven great Clans/Houses and their vassal-families as well as several Minor Clans. The Crab Clan - Brave defenders of the Empire and Rokugan's first line of defense against the Shadowlands. Considered the rudiest, most disgusting an barbaric of the Clans and they could care less, they havea Duty to perform. The Crane Clan - Beautiful but deadly. They count the Greatest swordsman in Rokugan amongst their numbers, their skills at the blade are exceeded only by their Skills at court. Often considered the epitome of Samurai culture. The Dragon Clan - Enigmatic, wise and introspective. The Dragon are know for their enlightened ways, deadly swords skills and the Keen eyes of their Magistrates. The Dragon also have some of the finest Swordsmen in Rokugan and are best know for their two-sword technique. The Lion Clan - Aggressive, haughty and brilliant. The Lion are the masters of the Battlefield and have amongst their numbers the brightest tactical minds in all of Rokugan. Universally reknowned for their Brashness. The Phoenix Clan - Masters of the Five Elements, the Phoenic are best known for their Magical Prowess, few can stand to face the might of an enrage Phoenix army. Their Samurai are some of the finest Bodyguards in Rokugan. The Unicorn Clan - Masters of mounted combat. They become one with their steeds and are a froce to be reckoned with on the Battlefield. They are also only recently returned to Rokugan in the last 200 years, having been gone to explore the lands outside of the empire. They are considered barbaric and uncivilized. The Scorpion - Assassins, Saboteurs, Spies, Courtiers and generally, dirty, underhanded and deceitful. what can you say about a clan that is universally know for the masks that it's members wear? Despite what the rest of the Clans think the Scorpion are most dedicated to the health and well-being of the Empire, why? Cause it's their Duty. At any rate part of the set-up for the game I'm going to run is that all the Characetrs are members of the Scorpion Clan. This way I can run it as a Spy Campiagn set in medieval Japan. Lots of fun to be had. I recently aquired a nice little supplement from the Spycraft game a random mission Generator...and WOW does it have some good ideas. I got about a third of the way through the sheets I have and already have ideas and notes for around 15 seperate missions! Only took a little creative thinking to tweak them form a modern-day setting to the world of Rokugan. I am SO looking forward to running this game!

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
No it wasn't getting cheaper Peter. I merely said that I wasn't going to wait until it did. Especially since the shelves in our stores aren't buckling under the weight of the game now that it IS highpriced.

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Yep, that's the problem with games made in Germany and distributed by an Austrian publisher. They aren't nearly as popular anywhere outside the German speaking countries...
From your recent posts in the Mint I would assume you like it and have been spending way too much time playing it? :)
It's all my fault... sorry :))

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Still playing through Diablo II right now, started up another new Character that I'm so far doing pretty well with. Really liking the Barbarian, simply due to it being low-matinence, ie- not a lot of Hot-key action to monkey with like I do with the Assassin. But I'm doing my usual Scatter-shot approach and balancing out the things I want, which may be less effective. About the only hting I've denied almost is entirely are the Warcries. The exception being Potion Find and Item Find...or will be Item Find when I gain a level. Most of the websites I've been to keep saying how useful these are fro keeping monsters from resureccting, but I find Ice weapons do the trick just fine in most cases.

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Don't worry Peter, it's an addiction I love. I haven't even been able to spend way too much time on it. :( This pesky thing called social life has kept on dragging me away from it. No matter how hard I try not to have one, it keeps right on coming at me. ;p Right now I'm in level 3 or so (on my way to Shiel). And I already noticed it was German, some of the texts weren't in English even though the spoken text was. :)

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Well what's a good day for you? And time? heck what is our time difference anyway? I know we've played Starcraft Online before but i was up fairly early for that as I recall, which doesn't bother me much as I'm usually up around 6am on the weekends anyway.

My time zone is GMT+1 and I should have time. I don't tend to organize that kind of thing, so just ping me if you want to play and see if I'm on and available ;)

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Wow. It's the first time I've posted in Renfield's Game Lab. :)
Anyone else here play Magic: The Gathering?
I've got a PS2 and a Gamecube. Here are some quick observations:
Gamecube: Is really worth getting, even if you only decide to buy a few games. The games themselves are usually cheaper than XBox or PS2, and you can get generic memory cards for as little as $4.00.
I've only got a few games for GC, but for me it's been well worth it.
If any of you are planning on getting The Sims for PS2, don't. All you can do is live with your nagging mother and be her slave. Not my idea of fun. PC version is so much superior, in so many ways.

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
I used to play Magic and the L5R CCG and quite a few other CCG's. Fortunately I've given up the flat-crack habit and have saved a lot more money, which is good since I need it. I still have one magic deck I kept after I sold off my collection of goodies two years ago. It's a colorless and blue multi-player deck built around the Urza's lands and Tolarian Academy and LOTS of Artifacts. Also includes the Chimeras and Phyrexian Dreadnoughts and many, many fun tricks.

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
@Ren: It sounds like you have one killer deck! :) The latest Magic editions and expansions are all extremely artifact-heavy. I expect the next set will be anti-artifact.
I've got 7 decks, only a few of which are built around artifacts. My best deck is a Green/White Cat Equipment Deck, with lots of leonin-themed stuff, a few Cat Legends, (and 4 serra embraces, for flying). Very similar to that one is my White Griffin Deck, which also has lots of equipment and 4 Whispersilk Cloaks (rendering the griffins unblockable), but obviously no flying spells.
I've got a Red Artifact 'cheese' deck that's good at picking off enemies slowly until I get out my big artifact creatures that have artifact-affinity. Then I have a Black/White Life/Death deck with a pestilence theme and lots of plague rats, along with 4 Life Bursts.
I also have several decks that have never performed very well: a Green Dog deck, a Red/Green creature deck, and a Red Burn deck.
I don't play Blue. Just never could get into it.

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
I never did either, hated all the counterspell crap. So No Counterspells...8) The blue helps with some of the trick cards I have to bounce artifacts back to my hand etc...I do have direct damage via 4 Rocket Launchers...with the Tolarian academy I have more than enough mana to use them even at a 2:1 ratio, but for real fun I put in a Karn the silver Golem Legend to animate all my artifacts and lower the activation costs of the rocket launcher. So I use my mana to blow up someone's creatures, then swamp him with my now-living artifacts...8) It's a multoi-function deck. hey, if you can do it, get your hands on all the Legends from the Weatherlight Crew and build a deck around it. Including the Legacy Weapon, the weather ligth adn the Predator. Sure it'sa 5-color deck, but WOW the fun I had with that deck. The trick is in color changing artifacts and creatures, ie that change one color into another, used a bunch of item I can't recall the name of but worked very well...and were colorless to put out!

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Sounds like you had some really neat deck ideas, Ren! :)
I'll look into seeing if I can build a deck along those lines. We'll see. It seems like the best cards get snatched up at the local card shop, and no one ever lets them go.

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
heh if you liked that...of the last few decks I had assembled my favorites were the nigh-creaturless multi-player deck that could kill everyone else at once...the creature in the deck was obstiante familiar, only draw as many cards as you like, no matter how many you are forced to draw...
Horn of Plenty; Play a Land, draw a card Cauldron of Storms; Tap a land for mana bounce it to your hands and can play one extra land per turn. Sphere of Protection:Green; All damage from green sources reduced by two. FastBond(green card): Play as many lands per turn as you like, take a point of damage for every card beyond the first. Soul Drain (?): 1 Black, 1 White + X. Do X damage to target oppnent, gain X life. with Obstinant Familiar Draw as much as you want, play as much as you want build up your mana pool until you get the Soul Drain...blast somebody for however many Mana you've built at that point..."Eat 4 million damage!"
The other fun deck was the Animated Land Death deck. Dingus Staff; take 2 points of damage every time you lose a land. Burning Sands(?); Every time you lose a creature, you lose a land. Various ways to animate lands. Animate all of an opponent's Lands, zorch one of their newly animated lands...watch their man go poof! AND they take damage for each land they lose! other cards to cleanse other creatures from the board so they can't hurt you and enough life-gain to stay ahead of the opponents damage curve....8)

Re: Renfield's Game Lab
Gamers Wanted: Hey gang, the Legend of the Five Rings RPG I wanted to run here at home is not happening due to lack of playerage so I am contemplating running it as an online game. I would utilize IRC/IRQ one of which has a bult in die-rolling utility, or will when I set up the game. The idea for the online si that it would be LIVE not via e-mail. Grnated there will be some e-mailing back and forth for characetr Sheets and subplots. If anyone is interested in this let me know. Later on I will post more requirements and set up for the story etc...
I do require a commitment of time so we can sit down and play once a week for several hours at a time. I will try to arraneg this at the most convenient time for everyone to be able to show up at the same time and be realtively awake...8) So if you have an interest in Japanese Culture and fantasy RPGing and have the time to commit feel free to post. There will be also a requiment to purchase the Core Rule book for the system so we're all operating from th same info. I already have 3 potential playes and would like to see between 2-4 others as well. This will NOT be a hack-n-slash game, in fact if things devolve to the point of Combat then people will die. Not to say there WON'T be combat, but it's a muc more politically-oriented game.
