Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

of course, it would be good if I gave you an email address that worked:

lizarincreel@yahoo.com

As to what kind of game, I would prefer to get a yeah or nay from Tad prior to mentioning anything -- and even then, I will need to be a little careful about it.

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

Actually, slight change of direction.  It looks like one of the other licenses I was pursing is going to work out.

However, I would still like to talk to you about potentially making using of you as a "Creative Advisor".  The time commitment would be failry low (at least for the next year or two, and even after that it shouldn't be too bad).  I think I have a compensation package you may find of interest.

The avisory work you would do would not even apply to the first title we are working on.  HOWEVER, we are doing that first title to build a revenue stream to support the product we really want to build.  That product was inpired, in part, by Otherland and this site.

Basically this second product will have the technical infrastructure to support what I think you were exploring with this site and that is true online interactive fiction.

Imagine an online episodic story where your readers weren't just reading the story and interacting with you about it (which I loved btw), but were able to actually be characters in the story.  That is the product we eventually want to build.

I have spent the last seven years building a base technical infrastructure for online applications and the last year playtesting interactive fiction events in MMOs (massively multiplayer online events).  The largest event I did had 90 actors, several hundred participants, and lasted a week.  Other people I coordinated with had a series that played to a smaller audience, but had five-seven episodes.

Anyway, because you were such an inspiration, I would love to get you involved (and hopefully properly rewarded!) But if not, I just wanted to say thank you for the imagination and the consideration.

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

Sonjaya, I had a reply ready to go out to you, but it didn't get sent (for various reasons, none of them having to do with you or the message's contents.)

I'll send it.  I've been very interested in the massive-multiplayer environment issue for years, and in fact Houseworld (from OTHERLAND) springs from that idea.  Just as an example...

If you wish to contact me directly, tad@shadowmarch.com works just fine.

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

I received your message, Sonjaya, and thanks.  I'll be sending you something back soon, but I'm in final 72 hours or so of deadline on SHADOWMARCH, so it may take a few days.

Cheers!

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

Sounds good.  I have a lot I am doing on my end too, so not to worry about that time frame.  You were my top pick, so now that I know there is potential interest, I can hold off on the other authors on my list.

And beside, the last thing I want to do is impact Shadowmarch.  I am looking forward to getting that in my hands to read!  I can't wait to see how it has developed.

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

I was so bummed when the bug game that Tad was working on got canceled.

I forget what it was called, but you rode around on big bugs...it was supposed to be an organic world or something like that.

Dark Zion.  Yeah, I was bummed, too.  I put a reasonable amount of work into that.  That's two in a row.  (A more recent one went belly-up, too.)  One of the reasons I approach these things cautiously.

Bug riding sounds a bit like Kunohara's otherland sim.  Was his domain inspired by the project?

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

No, not the killer wasps.

*use the english explorers accent if you wish*

When I was in the rainforests of Brunei, we had a praying mantis visit out camp one evening and although it was but a few inches high it was incredibly aggressive towards us.  If you pointed your finger at it, instead of retreating it came forward like a boxer and I swear it actually said 'come and have a go if you think you're hard enough'.

Carry on.

Caution is definetly recommended in this instance as well. Games are a tough ventures ... they really are a bit too risky from a business point of view, so you have to be slighlty insane to actually develop them ;)

MMOs and things like I mentioned above are the worst of the lot to try to get out because the costs are so high and they profit margins are actually pretty low.

The strategy is to build a profitable game studio based on another genre (which we actually have a license for).

Then, if there is interest on this end -- the project mentioned aboved can really be run as an R&D project -- and it would have to be done in a way as to NOT burn certain authors time ;).  Tad definetly has some interesting ideas I would love to explore techinically -- but it would be important to do it in a way that is not instrusive on his time.

Re: I am interested in licensing Otherland...

Like say getting other writers to expand on some of Tad's ideas in their own way? *grin* I bet you could easily find a few authors around here up for the task. I for one would love to see an MMORPG version of Otherland and it's domain, including options for adding fresh new domains as the game expands.
