Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

Definitely no smileys - can you imagine what Miiru's posts would look like if you let her use those?  You wouldn't be able to see the text for the graphics!  hehehe.

Really, it's a foofy graphical thing that just clutters up other forums and annoys me.  The text variety is much less intrusive.

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

What's wrong with what we have?

Sure a few added features would be cool, but many of us seem to agree that we want smarch to remain smarchy. Is there some serious issue/reason why we have to get a new system? A few add-ons or upgrades might be all we need to keep us happy, unless of course there's some reason why we have to get rid of what we have.

I don't mind changing but I'm firmly in the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' camp.

The features that most people are mentioning seem to be things that Guthwulf's board has, surely ours could be amended to add those features?

Or did I really miss something? Was there a big reason why we have to ditch this system?

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

I don't see a good reason to upgrade feature wise, either. The only big problem with this board is it's stability.

At the current level of activity, that doesn't seem to be a problem. When the Smarch books are released, a lot more people might come here to visit this site though.

And we'd better have a more stable board by then...

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

I agree on the NO-images policy. It makes the boards soo much faster too load without them. And it also prevents the location of certain things to stay constant (rather than zipping around the screen as the images load).

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

I'm the late comer again. The ideas are all great and I even agree with the board is great anyways.. I'm just agreeable today.

Seriously, some other features could be nice true, but I just love Smarch and the Smarchies.

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

I *think* YabbSE would be more stable than XMB for large amounts of users, its boards seem to load up very quickly and supposedly use less bandwdith than other php/mysql solution s and vertainly cgi ones.  It is free to boot.

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

Hi all,

No ETA on the new boards.  With the UBB up, I've been taking a more leisurely survey of the field.

I have a sandbox phpBB installation that I've been messing around with.  I also took a peek at XMB.  I was a little put off by the minimal information on their web site, and more put off by the planned ground-up rewrite.  That doesn't mean it's out of the running, but I don't like the idea of being two releases away from a major overhaul.  Next on the list is to start kicking the tires on YabbSE.

Thanks for all the input, everyone.  Keep it coming.

Best!

Matt

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

I went with XMB due to the minimalist feel of it and the fact that it was, at least to me, more flexible than phpBB.  It is used on some fairly major boards, but my application for it will (hopefully) not be as popular as this board or as resource heavy.  It does have it's flaws though there are hacks/mods to overcome them.

I really would recommend yabbSE over phpBB and invision.  If you want any help with the templates etc I'd be willing to pitch in.

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

Thanks.  I'm not knocking XMB; for all I know, it's fabulous.  Being new to it, though, I could stand to see more info on their web site.  The bigger concern for me is the announced ground-up re-write not too far off.

A bit on the late side, but I agree. No evil images. Being a global moderator on a 700-members community, I can safely say, images... are... hell...

:)

And yes, I'd agree to no graphics smileys, too, I like the text ones best anyway. ^_^
