Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
The last I remember hearing was that Shadowmarch book one wasn't not scheduled to be released until September at the earliest, but the shadowmarch home page says Spring 2004. I'm just curious which approximate release date is more accurate.
(I need to know how excited I should be getting).

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
According to Daw´s online newsletter SHADOWMARCH BOOK ONE will be out in September 04.
For one reason or another the Shadowmarch site still claims "spring 04" but that is most unlikely.
The UK edition seems to be scheduled for late October 04.

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
The site still claims a release date of Spring '04 because that's the last official word I received from Deborah. I actually just requested some updated info yesterday.
As soon as I find something out, I'll update the site. Sorry if the information seems stale in the meantime.

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
I think before the MB went offline Tad had already posted something about the delay. If I remeber correctly, he underestimated the amount of rewrites and revisions that he would have to do. And, of course, the new plotline that he is writing into the book.
Books are frequently delayed. Tad´s books are ALWAYS late *g*

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
I couldn't remember if the information stating spring 04 was there before the boards crashed or not. I thought it might be too good to be true that Shadowmarch would be coming so quickly after War...Thanks for the info.

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
It won't be spring, that's for sure.
The actual release date has been September of 2004 for months, but it's now been pushed back to November, having mostly to do with publication and marketing issues, as it's substantially finished on my end. November was a compromise between my two English-language publishers who had different plans.
By the way, isn't it funny that we still have names of months that reflect a time when there was no July and August? When November was the ninth month, instead of the eleventh, and September and October and December all meant what they said, too?

Hi Tad, Will you be going on a book-signing tour once the new version of Shadowmarch is published? I wanted to make to your appearance at Borders in Sunnyvale in early December but had too much going on that day unfortunately. Can't wait to read Shadowmarch again. Jeff

NOVEMBER!? =)
I guess I need to hurry up and finish that time machine I've been working on...
Since generally the powers that be dont say what they mean, I would think adjusting the names of months would cause serious confusion and mayhem in our government, and we couldn't have that now could we?

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
November now? Man they sure are taking their sweet time for this one. It seems to be the publisher's doing this time, and I resent them for it. I can remember looking forward to this book when "Spring 2004" was still more than a year away.
Anyway, Tad, any idea on the size of it? And what will be the title? Simply Shadowmarch Book I?

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
Actually, I haven't decided on the title, yet. Will it simply be "Shadowmarch" (with the second volume having a different name), or will that be the equivalent of "Otherland" and each volume will have a title? I don't know. Any feelings about that on the part of the reading public?
Length wise, it will be something like a hundred to a hundred and fifty (manuscript) pages longer than what was online. Over two-thirds of that is the Qinnitan storyline. (If you haven't seen the preview, you can find that in the "Story" section of this board.)

New stuff! Glee! Joy!
I really cannot wait until this book comes out; there's something indescribably special about having watched its conception and followed it through its development, and I'm thrilled that it'll be out soonish. I can't wait! November can't come soon enough.
I'd love to know about possible signing tours, as well... ~surreptitiously adds Jax, FL to the list of Dogly Visitations™~

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
Renaming months? Not a bad idea. We could get rid of the stupid caesarean months and rename July and August to September and October, and so on. So the calendar would read:
January February March April May June September October November December Undecimber Dodecimber
Simple.
And while I'm on the subject: name the trilogy Shadowspring (in remembrance of the ephemereal publishing date). The individual volumes would then be Shadowmarch, Shadowapril and Shadowmay.

I'm not sure I can deal with Hollowe'en being on December 31st. But on the plus side, I could get two birthdays every year - one on October 31st and one on December 31st. :)

If the theme of the series is going to be Shadowmarch in the same way Otherland was the theme for Otherland, then I'd say use "Shadowmarch, Name of Book One", "Shadowmarch, Name of Book Two" and so on. But if Shadowmarch is part of the "Something, Anything, or Nothing" saga the way Dragonbone Chair is part of "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn", then maybe it should just be the title of the first book and not the entire series.
Having said all that, my personal preference would be for it to be the title of the first book and the series to be called something neat.

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
Well, the series needs a name, and 'Shadopwmarch' is already so very beloved... as long as there is *any* series name. I remember the German translation of M,s&T didn't have a series name at all that's why they were always referred to as the 'Tad Williams Books' or 'Drachenbeinthron' by us Tad-reading gang, which is kinda stupid. As far as I know they've amended that by now and called it 'Die drei Schwerter' (The Three swords.)
Umm...yeah. If it makes sense to do so, Shadowmarch for Series Name!

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
I like the contest idea, if the contest was for the naming of the first books title and the series was called Shadowmarch.
Due to the nature of how Shadowmarch Book one was originally done, I think it would be really neat to have a contest for the title of the first book since it would incorporate the readers that much further into a book that, in many ways, everyone already has so actively participated in.

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
Tad, speaking of contests, remember a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away when we were trying to name the Mint? The name you fancied was the Queen's Lament which you said had shifted, as names of taverns and inns are wont to do, into the Quiller's Mint. You said you had an idea for a story about why it was originally called the Queen's Lament and that you would pen it for us as a present for having so diligently come up with a multitude of names for the Mint. Is there any chance you still remember why it was called the Queen's Lament and would be willing to share said story with us?

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
I echo Claudia - November is Spring in the Southern hemisphere, all ye Northern Hemisphere Tyrants Begone!
(I won't say 'just in time for Christmas', 'cause I won't wait until Christmas.)
(That said, WotF had a significant delay before coming out here, here's hoping Smarchy Books don't suffer the same.)
(Not that I had to wait for WotF, 'cause some nice Dragenkatten (?) send one for me birfday.)
I prefer 'Shadowmarch' to be the name of the series, and the books themselves to have individual or subtitles to seperate them. Talking about Otherland always gets a bit confusing; out here the first book was only titled 'Otherland', with the subtitle 'City of Golden Shadow' hidden away on a single title page. Never sure if people mean Otherland as a whole series or Otherland the first book.

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
I'm not so sure about a contest for this one. I mean, titling books that someone else hasn't even written yet?
My advice (for whatever it's worth) would be to call the first volume Shadowmarch if more of the action in later books will happen elsewhere in Eion. But if the later books stick to the (I think) original idea of most of the action occuring in Shadowmarch castle, then I would suggest keeping Shadowmarch in all the titles.
Do you have total freedom on this Tad, or do publishers have a strong say in it?
Maybe we should have a contest for worst book title? How about Shadowmarch - Revenge of the Qar Thieves

Re: Shadowmarch Publishing Date?
arrr, publishing dates and marketing issues, the bane of the creative writer ;)
BUT since Tad has great publishers/editors and translators (and this is not self-evident!), overall working together as a good team (i suppose...), we can be sure to get another COMPLETED masterpiece of fantasy over the next years. yay!
and i too vote for Shadowmarch as title, and subtitles for the volumes. that´s the way it works best. of course, if Wolfshade´s thought proves right, and the story moves away into faraway regions, "The Shadowline", reminiscing our fanzine, would also sound nice. just an idea...
