Yeah, I think so. And I've just returned from another raiding party to the library, with more Kurosawa, Carné, and Renoir in tow, along with some Buster Keaton and Rossellini.

Yes! Cops is my favorite short by far. It's ever so funny. Plus you can see a bunch of humor conventions for the first time. I'll tell you later which if you don't catch them yourself.

The best local is AroVideo, but as they point out in their FAQ:
"The globe has been broken into six separate territories (regions) by Hollywood studios in order for them to maintain control over the internatonal release dates and strategies of their cinema product. New Zealand has been designated Region Code 4, (incorporating Australia and South America), and thus all DVD products that we are able to offer for sale on this site are Region Code 4 (RC4).
Current (if somewhat dubious) NZ legislation regarding 'parallel imports' allows us to provide a growing selection of Region Code 1 and 2 DVDs for rental only. These discs are available to DVD consumers who have had the appropriate modification made to their DVD hardware, though RC1 discs also require television monitors to be compatible with the NTSC broadcast system. Region coding currently restricts the use of imported discs on DVD-ROM drives, and thus is not recommended.

I already have a TV and video that can play NTSC as well as PAL, and when I get back from Europe I'll probably buy a good regionless DVD Player. Then I'll just have to import all the films I want from Europe or the US. Expensive, but the only option.

How expensive is shipping for DVDs if you order from Europe or North America? Basically all you need nowadays is a reasonably priced DVD player thatīs capable of PAL/NTSC conversion. Then you look up the regionhack on the internet and apply it. After that all you need is lots of money for the stacks of DVDs that will soon arrive. :)

Hehe, parallel post.
Here in Germany you can buy only region 2 and region 0 DVDs legally. A completely ridiculous policy considered that everyone can just order them on the internet. If someone doesnīt want to order from North America for example, then you just go to amazon.fr and order it there. France obviously has no restrictions on region 1 DVDs.
The other completely ridiculous thing is that orders from german amazon for some weird reason take up to 2 weeks to arrive at my place while stuff from Canada takes just two days.
Some region 1 DVDs wonīt play on a region free payer. So being able to change the code is kind of practical. Itīs no big deal. All it took was pressing a few buttons on the remote.

I encountered region problems for the first time while trying to play something on a DVD ROM. I can't remember whether we managed to region-hack it or gave up and watched something else. Half my DVDs at home are region 1s of things that weren't available for sale in NZ. Most of the DVD sales here are blockbuster fluff I'd never want to own anyway.
Arovideo is 20mins walk from my house, and they're brilliant. They have a PC with IMDB on the counter, and the only problem was that I couldn't get season 3 of Xfiles out because one of the staff had it.

I can change the region on my DVD player by following some cryptic hand-written instructions that the helpful people at Farmers handed over when I bought the thing. I've never actually tried it, since I'm such a good little consumer, I only buy region 4 DVDs.
I think if I was really keen I'd just set up the PC DVD to play region 1 stuff. Or pick up one of those really cheap players ... of course I already have 3 devices that can play DVDs, so adding more is probably not the best idea.

Aren't there supposed to be some screwy DVD Players that can change regions, but after a set number of region changes (about 30, or so I heard) they freeze up and won't change ever again?

The DVD playing software (PowerDVD 2.0) that came originally with my computer allows you to change the region setting 5 times. After the 5th change it freezes. A simple little tool called DVD Genie took care of that little problem. The DVD drive itself is region free.
Edited to add that Iīve only heard about a limited number of changes in conection with software DVD players which was what I originally wanted to say before I got sidetracked by the thought of fixing myself a little snack and lost my concentration.

Mine has a little 4 on the back for appearances' sake, and the manual says 4, but it is effectively region-free.
