Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

For the evil ceo: ceo test. Of course it doesn't test your evil quotient, but maybe it just assumes beforehand that any ceo is an evil one.

Seven of Nine. I guess I`m either an evil CEO or a Borg Babe in a tight shiny outfit. Tough call that.

5 out of 9.

Potentially evil CEO I suppose. Must try harder.

Aan, do you remember where I posted that quote from the ABC prices? The website now says that the US hardcover is 33 Euros! (I think they changed it after I called them yesterday and ordered it and was surprised that it cost so much and told them the website claimed something else.)

Thanks. And no, the Hague is not an option. :( And it will be sometime before I regain my enthusiasm about ABC again. They've made my book lose some of it's sparkliness.

Re: A Forum 9 Trustee Territory (Rook & Aan`allein)

Wasteland 51
Rantz

Not feeling very coherent today, so here are a few random chewable thoughts:

-----
Sportz

Is anyone out there an actual, factual fan of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks?  I'll be the first to admit that they do have a copious amount of talent (we'll start with Giguere, of course, and we can't forget Kariya, Oates, Sykora, and Ozonlinsh), but ... they're the Mighty Ducks!  If any team was cursed with a lame mascot, it's the team from Anaheim.  They're named after a kid's movie, for God's sake.  And the cartoon didn't help either.  In fifty years, I suppose the name "Mighty Ducks" will sound no sillier than "Red Wings" or "Maple Leafs" (which, grammatically, should be "Maple Leaves"), but in the here and now, no matter how well the team performs, they'll always be seen as a joke.  Disney, ditch the failed marketing synergy now and give the team a proper name... and NOW!  Because it'll be a cold day in hell when the words "Mighty Ducks" are etched on the steel of the once respectable Stanley Cup.

(Frankly, if they rename them the "Anaheim Pirates" as a marketing ploy for this year's Pirates of the Carribean movie, I'd be somewhat happy.)

While I'm on the subject of sports: go Pistons!  Finally, a Detroit team is succeeding in something.... Anyone watch the Dallas/Sacramento series?  Hasn't anyone told them about the concept of "defense"?  Nowitski's goatee, by the way, is the coolest facial development in the NBA since Ben Wallace's afro.  Makes him look like the Cool Lord of Evil it does.  I wish I looked as good in a goatee....  Cleveland finally redesigned their logo to include a sword, so that's good. Anything is much better with a sword....  And why is it "Golden State" Warriors?  What's wrong with calling them "San Francisco" Warriors?  The Golden State monniker makes them sound so Collegiate.

-----
Mutantz

Watching the X-Men movie made me realize that the movie was a perfect gage of geekiness.  Say we have a geekiness scale from 1 to 10, 10 being basically a non-geek.  If were confused about the silhouette in the closing scene, or if you didn't see the silhouette at all, you are a 10.  If you knew the name of the metal guy who saved the screaming girl, you're a 7.  If you know the name of the screaming girl, you're a 5.  If you could tell me wich of the students was the movie equivalent of Cipher, your're a 3.  And if you can identify all the names on the freeze frame of Stryker's computer, you're definitely a 1 and you should be locked away in the basement of a comic book store forever.

Because, you know, you'll be happier there.

I'm never going to buy my cousin drinks anymore, either.  I made sure he went to the bathroom before the movie.  Nevertheless, he still needed to go to the bathroom... and right before the Wolverine/Lady Deathstryke battle!  And, guess what, he still had to go to the bathroom after the movie ended.  The kid has a bladder the size of a walnut.

-----
Cartoonz

My faith in American cartoons has increased exponentially since I got cable.  Notable shows:

Fairly Odd Parents, Nickelodeon.  A nutty show about a kid and his two magical, hyper parents.  (Wishes go very awry: if the kid wishes to become an adult, he becomes a bald, middle-age man.)  The best kid's show to blend silly and sometimes geeky humor in a retro package since Powerpuff Girls got too preachy.

Adult Swim, Catroon Network.  Isn't it funny how some shows get better once you stick 'em on after 11 pm?  I never watched Futurama or Family Guy regularly when they were on Fox.  Now I can't get enough of 'em.  Also, Aqua Teen Hunger Force is becoming my favorite Williams Street show (until "Harvey Birdman" gets new episodes, that is).  Mummy:  "Huuuug!!! Huuug!!"  Fries: "I'm not going to give you a..."  Mummy:  "Cuuuurse!  Cuurrrssseee!!!"  And how about that one where Danzig moves next door?

X-Men: Evolution, Cartoon Network.  Let me start off by saying that I hate X-Men: Evolution.  They turned the X-Men into a superhero version of Dawson's Creek.  (Given that it first aired on WB, that may well have been the intention.)  Still, they did get some things right: the velvety Goth design of "Scarlet Witch" is the best look that Wanda has ever sported.  And, if the Sentinels make it on X3 like I predict, I want them to look like the updated models in Evolution.  Other than that, phooey on show.  (It's even warped my cousin's mind, too.  He rationalized that "Spike", a made-for-TV character, would appear in X2 because another "new" character, Nightcrawler, is in the movie as well.  I felt horribly geeky recouting Nightcrawler's debut in 1975.)

Other CN shows: Where is "Whatever Happened to Robot Jones?"  That was one of the best newcomers to Cartoon Network! ... And there was this one short (a Dexter's Lab one, I think), that spoofed superheroes.  One was a Thor-clone called "Van Hallen", who wields a magic guitar.  Pure, pure genius. :)  ... Which also reminds me: someone needs to put "The Tick" cartoon back on the air.

-----
Furniturez

I finally admit defeat when it comes to home decorating.  I'd wanted to go for that "Euro chic" look, so, initially I purchased "trendy" designs from IKEA.  I soon came to discover that "trendy" also means flimsy.  These things were designed for svelte persons, not 190-lb lumbering oxen like me.  My chair didn't last 5 months before the backing snapped and I was sitting on what felt like a plank of wood.

So this time I'm going to to get a friend over and we're going to see what look will suit me.  She insists that I leave the room messy so she can envision the room in its natural state, to which I said, "Ah, you're not going to like the smelly socks lying on the floor and the piles of unwashed dishes, so I'll clean the house all the same, thanks."

I picked up a Dania catalogue, just to see if I could reaffirm my faith in the Euro style, but everything looked so flimsy and, er, tacky that I may have to go severely Colonial this time.

(Heh heh... maybe even... ExTreme Colonial!  I envision it looks something like a cross between Pier 1 and the Temple at Jerusalem.  The possibilities are endless.)

-----
Segwayz

I have just been informed by dragondan that Segways can be rented, here, in Seattle, Washington, for a mere $20 per 30-minute ride.  See y'all on Alki Beach, my homies.

(Seriously.  I like to bike on Alki, but my reckless style and disregard for pedestrians have earned me more than a few evil eyes.  At least now I can be reckless and socially responsible.  I don't know how that last part adds up, really, but image is everything, you know.)

Ok, no, I did see it, I was just waiting for something to come out of the water, so I didn't see exactly what the shape was.  I also blame that on seriously needing new glasses.  Yes, it's all the glasses' fault.

Re: A Forum 9 Trustee Territory (Rook & Aan`allein)

A-yup... dragged my brother down to the local theater to see it.  It was OK, but not great.  (My brother also felt burned by the "Enter the Matrix" game.)

A list of improvements we came up with:
-  The part of the Architect should have been played by ... Christopher Lee!
-  Upon entering the Architect's room, Neo should have said, "Oh my God!  Christopher Lee!" with awestruck wonder.
-  At the end of the Architect segment, when he says, "We won't meet again," Christopher Lee hops onto an anti-gravity Honda scooter and zooms into a scenic vista displayed on one of his many computer screens
-  Ghost (from the game) should have actually been in the movie.
-  Ditto to Jada.
-  Less of Keanu's butt, which was a equally vomit inducing as the rave scene.
-  At the end, when the camera panned from Neo's body to the body inhabited by Agent Smith, they should have freeze framed the screen, and had a transparent green image of Matrix-world Agent Smith laughing maniacally

All in all, not a bad movie, but not great, either.  It did give us countless hours of enjoyment watching other movies and joking that he or she is the Keymaster or that an auto racing game was ripped off the Matrix, leaving the both of us to hop around the room in fits of deranged merriment.  All told, it won't stop me from watching the conclusion in November, anyway.
