Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Nope, I don't know.

*looks pleadingly in Tad's direction*

We'd love to hear the story of Tad's first book...

no he's just the only good looking author ever. the rest are too scrawny, too old, or just to dorky looking to have their picture posted online.

Re: Tads firts publisher try??

Tailchaser's Song is Tad's first book. It was published in hardcover by DAW in the US in 1985. It is my understanding that Tad was not only extraordinarily talented (as we all know), but extremely lucky, landing a sale with the first (iirc) publisher he contacted.

He's way off the norm. ;)

Re: Tads firts publisher try??

Actually, SS, according to the info in the Tad section (copied from the DAW site), DAW was not the first publisher he went to. The first one "didn't do animal books" (I paraphrase) and it was DAW he went to after that.

Doh! You're right. I'd forgotten the "we don't do animals" thing. *shrug*

Still, making the sale on the second shot is pretty exceptional.

And no, I don't think I've ever heard who that first publisher was.

Re: Tads firts publisher try??

I think the reason that we don't know who it was is that Tad wasn't willing to disclose it publicly.

Iirc, he was just going through a list, and DAW wasn't first on the list.

If the Mantidae have more influence, it's only because they've been here longer, and with more regularity.  They were made Mantii because Tad respected them, not the other way 'round.

You get respect by earning it, not by wearing a magic label.

Oh, and the rule 'round here on spelling the plural of Mantis is that you can't spell it the same way twice in a row. :-)

Re: Tads firts publisher try??

I heard that Tad originally sent TailChaser's Song to Penthouse because he heard that they published books and periodicals about pussy cats. They sadly turned him down but they did however like title. :)

I think I saw this on a VH1 behind the music special they did on Tad's band Idiot.

I suspect that from the tone of the post you may take that statement with a grain of salt - for example, I doubt that Tad first sent TCS to Penthouse :)

Cody, Tad will listen to you just like he would listen to us Mantids. :) Maybe he would listen to you sooner, than he would to us since we've asked so many questions already. :D

I bet Tad was going down an alphabetical list.

1. Ballantine---nope. "no animals"
2. DAW---Jackpot!
3. etc.

*grin*

I doubt he'd miss Ace, Arrow Books, Aspect, Avon Eos, Baen, Bantam (Books/Press/Spectra), Colin Smythe and Corgi though. :)
Admittedly, several of those only publish a little bit of fantasy or science fiction, didn't exist back then, are imprints of other publishers or are UK publishers, but still... (besides, I've got this table with publishernames in my book database - you can't really expect me not to utilize that, can you?) ;)

Re: Tads firts publisher try??

The list of publishers gets a lot shorter once you research who actually takes unagented manuscripts. DAW is definately tops in the "no agent" category, with a three-month turnaround time (aside from being just generally cool people.) TOR is second, with four to six months; Baen is third, with up to *twelve* months turnaround time.

None of the other imprints Aan allien listed will accept a manuscript directly from an author. Agents that will accept unsolicited manuscripts are getting thinner, too.

Of course, I don't know if this was true when Tad was trying to get published. Just showing off my research and trying not to sound bitter. <grin>
