SS, this is an amazing index.  I plan to reread otherland this year, and I will definitely be adding to a bunch of these discussions.  Thanks a lot!

By the way, I feel muchly obligated to thank you a million times (but I can't do that to my copypaste keys, really) for making this topic in the first place. Great index. :D

Re: OTHERLAND topic index

SS, I'm sure you already are, but if you could keep a record of this around after Shadowmarch goes through whatever transitions it may, I would really appreciate it.

Welcome to Shadowmarch, PinkGoth :)

I'm glad it's been helpful. (And I'm quite glad your copypaste keys have been spared; a million blushes can tire a girl ever so ;)

Actually, though, I really should see about spending some time on it again; I've only scratched the surface. There are still rather a lot of interesting topics that need to be linked here before it's complete, but at least this is a start. :)

I've also been considering a reread, especially of SoSL, since I've only read that one once so far, and I'm quite sure there's much I missed on the first go. Makes it fun. :)

*nod* I'm glad you mentioned it. I'll be certain to do so, but will likely wait until last minute in order to get the most up-to-date copy of everything. Does make me wonder about archiving stuff...

I know Aan and Peter and Sahi and some others are working on some archiving. Probably should find out how extensively. In any case, I'm sure we'll figure out how before it's all lost (and I'll nab a copy of the OL stuff for certain).

Re: OTHERLAND topic index

SS, I already mentioned this in various other topics I think, but one can't say "Thank you" enough. *smile*  I found this index very helpful in my quest for answers and my attempt at lingering on in Otherland a bit more after finishing the books recently.  Thanks for all the good work.

A suggestion : I also found Sahi's Shadowmarch Meta-index very helpful in finding other interesting Otherland topics that are not in your list yet.

Perhaps I could look up those topics and post the links here.  Perhaps.  Sometime.  When I'm at home and can find everything and my internet connection is working and I have time and all that... :-)

And as far as I know, Peter has done a complete backup of all posts on all forums, but only stripped them of the UBB lay-out.  So all information should be there.  Yet another great job done.

Re: OTHERLAND topic index

I have indeed a full copy of the forums on my HD. I have the origingal pages as well as a version that has been stripped of the buttons and images that point to the Shadowmarch site. This version also has all the links changed so that they point to the local archive and not to Smarch.

If and how this archive can be made available is yet to be decided though. I really hope I can make it browsable and searchable online.

The content of this board is copyright by Tad though, so I can't distribute anything until I've managed to get an OK from Tad, and I'm not going to bother him until he's got a bit more time.

Re: OTHERLAND topic index

Sahi & Marion: Thanks for pointing to the Meta Index here, it is indeed a very useful tool. (Meta Cheers for Sahi and her Fabulous Histories Desk! :) Having the link here in this topic will be very helpful to any others looking for topics that haven't been added to the list above.

One way this differs a little bit is in the categorizing of the topics. It's so hard to tell what's in the threads just from the topic title (especially when the discussions veer as they tend to, being organic and all ;).

At one point, people (mostly those who hadn't finished reading the series) were commenting that they didn't want to read any of the OL topics because they couldn't tell which ones had spoilers for which parts of the books. So, this index attempts to sort it out a bit. Of course, I'm finding most of the topics do indeed spoil all the way to the end of the series, but there are a good number that don't. I also like grouping discussions by the content; one can get close from a topic title sort, but won't catch all of the topics that way (titles aren't always descriptive).

Anyway, it's just a sideline project. Takes a bit more time than just putting the links in here, since I'm also reading the threads again and sorting them out. Glad it's helpful, though, and anyone who wants to jump in is certainly welcome and appreciated! :)

I thought I'd seen you mention it elsewhere. Tres kewl, indeed.

You're right about holding back on distributing anything, though, until more details are settled. (Which means, too, the files will be that much bigger by then. :)

More Cheers for Peter and his Lists and Archives! *G*

Re: OTHERLAND topic index

I is already BIG, StrangeShe. The original .html files are ~1.1GB in size....

The modified files (with fixed links, removed buttons, member ratings, shadowmarch navigation bar and a few minor layout changes) are ~500MB.

A compressed archive is ~25MB with RK and ~35MB with RAR. A ZIP archive would probably be 60 - 80MB...

You can if you like, though I'm not sure what you mean by 'format,' exactly. I like the separation by topic, personally, even though it takes a bit longer -- but am open to suggestions. If what you meant is that you'd like to add to the links, please feel free: you could even just post them here and I can wave my magically mantisly wand and put them in the first post after. :)

Many apologies to all for not having gotten back to this. I have a terrible confession (and those who've watched me awhile probably already know all too well): I have this bad habit of taking on more projects than I can handle at any given time and working on them sort of in the at-a-whim fashion. Flighty? Fickle? Uhm, yeah. ;) But in my defense, I actually do get around to finishing them eventually.

(*thinks of projects in the queue: this, updating the SF & Fantasy Essentials topics, archiving the Rhubarb Pie (Neighborhood) to my home page, finishing final faq tweaks and getting it to the Hierarchs (*double wince*), helping Sahi with archiving the Mints, and loads of ontopic posts that I tend to postpone 'cause I have to think first ;)*)

So haven't forgotten, but they'll all have to wait a couple more days at least, 'cause I have a kitchen loaded with produce that I'm canning and preserving that won't wait. (*g* On the list for today: strawberry jam, salsa, cherry preserves, plum-orange jam. Yesterday I finished putting up a couple dozen jars of peach jam. Yeah, I'm a domestic type. ;)

Uhm. Pardon the unsolicited ramble. Heh.
*embarrassed*

I know the feeling, SS, trust me.

By the way, I think format in this case means what file format... html, txt, doc... that type of thing. My guess, anyway. I might be wrong.
