Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

The Concordance

A concordance is a book that tells you how much, and where, any given word appears in another (usually famous) book.  This site is the best online version of this: they have everyone from Dante and Cervantes (in translation) to Shakespeare, Melville, Wilde, Chaucer, Conrad and Byron, plus dozens more.

It's fascinating to me that Edgar Allan Poe, that master of the Gothic, used the word 'gothic' but nine times.  Or that 'thou' appears 5474 times in the King James Bible.  For the record, 'hell' appears 54 times and 'smite' 125 times.

Hmm - this topic is nearly full to the brim.  I'll have to do something special for the relaunch next week :)

Yikes! I've been meaning to make a tour of the Neighborhood -- there are so many new places I've not visited yet, this one included!

Looks like I'd better get clicking if I want to check out the Xenodochium before Housekeeping gets here ;)

Hiya StrangeShe!  Don't worry, I'm working on a plan now to archive all the old links once this particular topic ceases to be (btw, did you see what Aan did with the first Forum 9 Trustee Territory? clever clever)

All You Need to Know About Aphrodisiacs

Okay, I know about oysters and antlers, but snake blood and toad skins?
And I'm not too sure about mathematics as an aphrodisiac either.

Now I know why I never cared for liquorice. But I'm a sucker for pine nuts.

I was a little disappointed about the mathematics section. Not a word about angle computation or triangulation. Friendly numbers, my foot.

Marginal note: There's even a link toTAD on that site.

Hmmm...many of these were the old familiars but several were a surprise...Green M&M's? Friendly numbers?...I've obviously missed the potent call of a quadratic equation...

*goes off to buy large quantities of M&M's with which to eperiment* :-)

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Having lived in Taiwan for four years I once lived near a snake-restaurant. Buah! I always turned my head when I had to go by. And of course Taiwanese men are somehow obsessed with aphrodisiacs - from tiger penis to snake blood to the rhinoceros horn.

I most hated to go over nightmarkets and see the turtles get decapitated, with their cut off heads still moving in their own blood.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Turtles?  Poor little guys.  Of course, I'd probably say the same about cows if I went to an abattoir, and they don't even have any aphrodisiac qualities that I'm aware of.

Bizarre Record Covers

This one is just too strange (well, admittedly, many of the links here are strange, but this one...), but there's a kind of perverse amusement to be had out of seeing Devastatin' Dave, the Turntable Slave's "Zip Zap Rap", or Dave Stephens' disturbingly pictured "Organ Fascination" (they're talking about pipe organs, thank you very much).

And is that a black Michael Jackson with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial?  Oh the irony!

Hey, I actually got this Michael Jackson ET-album. Friend of mine bought it for me in the US once. Must be worth something now. It all comes in a box with a booklet. Wow, just remembered that thing...

Strategic Air Command Symphony Band?!?!?!

Music for Expectant Fathers?!?!?!

MUSIC TO GROW PLANTS?!??!?!

Well, I've always thought modern music was in a thematic rut.  I can't even recall the last song I heard that wasn't about "love".  So, I guess singing to plants is a welcome relief...

But I can't believe they don't have more under the "Dorks" section.  I have quite a few vinyls that would find a good home there...

From the far-too-addictive files

Bejeweled

Normally I don't post anything from the Dreaded Microsoft, but this game is just too damn addictive.

The game surface is several piles of gem-stones; click on two adjacent ones to swap them around, if there are three in a row they disappear and you get points.

My high-score so far is 7562.  Hopefully you can beat that within a few minutes :)
