cover art
I was just wondering what the cover art of SoSL had to do with the story. I mean, the golden city, the blue river, and the black mountain were all obviously taken from each volume of the story. But the cover of SoSL has who I assume is Rene holding a child (Cristabel? Cho-Cho? the Other? Steven?)on a hill or something while the inhabitants of the system look on. Did that happen in the story, or did I just miss it? I was just wondering where this idea for cover art came from. Thanks. BTW, I do love the artwork of these covers.

Re: cover art
I believe that that was Renie crossing the bridge-of-teeth in the fairytale land at Otherland's centre. I had some trouble placing it myself.

Re: cover art
page 394 in the hardcover:
"A large crowd had gathered on the near side of the river at the first stone of one of the most unusual bridges Renie had ever seen. It was made entirely of rectangular stone pillars stretching crookedly across the river like a linear stonehenge. Although they were of slightly different heights, none of them seemed to be more than a meter or so from its neighbor."
This is exactly the scene on the cover.

Re: cover art
Well, I also thought at first it was the Stone Girl, but if you take a closer look at it, the depicted child doesn't really fit to the description of the Stone Girl. On the other hand, I think Michael Whelan took some freedom, which is okay, because I think the cover artwork for all the novels is really well done. And for example the mountain of black glass he drew doesn't really fit to the description in the book either. Check out http://www.michaelwhelan.com , there he comments on his works for Otherland, and also shows some of his previous ideas , very cool different pics of the Mountain there, too.

Re: cover art
Yeah, Michael is certainly allowed some liberty in how he paints, I think -- he's earned it.
Also, with the fourth book he had to work without about half the manuscript, first draft, so I don't know how well I'd described the Stone Girl in that draft.
Did you know Michael's in the picture?

Re: cover art
Y' can't go around telling Michael Whelan to be faithful. Jeez how many Hugos is he up to yet? He's one of the High Ghods of SF/Fantasy Art, with a whole industry built around selling his paintings and photoprints, comanding absolute top dollar to do cover art for A-list books! Not to diss him. I think his art is beautiful. And it's available on t-shirts and coffee mugs and about three coffee table books by now and signed and numbered limited editions and....

Re: cover art
My bookmark is a Michael Whelan :)
I'll have to search the cover of SoSL when I get it back (currently on loan to borrowing-friend #5), even though I have no idea what Michael Whelan looks like.

Re: cover art
@Tad: Really ? He is on the cover ??? Hmm, wait, let me guess.. Is he the guy with the glasses and the green cap down in the middle ? To the right of the girl in the pink dress ?
And I never wanted to criticize Mr. Whelan's art just because something wasn't drawn as described in the book. It's ART...and he has done a great job. Right now on his page there is this gallery of the covers he drew for the Sepultura CD's...I soo loved the Arise pic, looks so weird.

Michael Whelan's cover of The Golden Key by Melanie Rawn,Jennifer Roberson and Kate Elliot features himself as Sario Grijalva - a sociopathic painter!

Re: cover art
_The Golden Key_ was an interesting attempt to bring historical progression to a fantasy novel - right up to a faux-renaissance. Worth a read, but not quite a classic.

thanks for the clarification, Wolfshade. It's so funny because in my mind I pictured that bridge so very differently that I just didn't recognize it on the cover. Sometimes I'm just a little slow on the uptake.
