Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

I know!  The screen is so much clearer now!

Rimm, that's three times in a row you've been first person posting after the site is; are you always online at this time of the maen?

Feedback:

Pixel Lab: This one sent me on the road to find a workaround for linux's inability to deal with shockwave and quicktime. Spent most of yesterday on that. No luck. Grrr!

Computer stupidities: Thank you for this one. Since Techtales.com update their site only once a month, an alternative is most welcome.

Squeegee: Oh, wow! Everything is so clear now!

Well, we all know that's not going to happen.  The next Mint topic should be 'QM - The 24hr Peter Depot'.  :)

Oh great, now I have guilt!  (52 cool-points to whoever tells me which movie that comes from)
I'll avoid the flash/shock-heavy sites in future, although I do know of at least one (involving a man riding a mobile nose) that I'll be using some day.

Oo - I hadn't seen TechTales until you mentioned it now.  Thanks - I'm gonna go read :)

No need. I'm in a distinct minority here, after all. That's no reason to deprive the others of cool sites.

I always have the option to boot into windows, should the need arise.

I think that Kehv was having problems as well; but I'd hate to force anyone away from the halcyon Linux and into the horrors of Windows, so I'll keep them to a minimum.

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

***December 22***

I had better use these Christmas links before they become obsolete for another year:

Hoopla Advent Calendar

Electric December Advent Calendar

There are little games, e-cards, pieces of Christmas historiana, recipes, and movies (December 11th of the Electric December has a few nifty Aardman animation [they're the guys who made Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run] for example).  The first link is relatively low-tech, the second needs the various Flash, Shockwave and Quicktime plugins.  Merry Christmas!

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

my site is all flash. i don't even have meta tags in case someone wanted to search for me. FLASH FLASH FLASH!!! it rocks. i can play with code easy, in fact my site used to be pure HTML, way back when. i just work better with the visual right there in front of me. well that was my random post of the day. oh wait, they're all random, NM.

Oh, and talk about computer stupidies... my roommate insists that she does computer programming for her parents' business. and i quote, "computer programming." I was surprised when she stated this, because she is an anthropology major and her windows 95 laptop crashes constantly--i have to help fix it a lot (as much as i can, anyway.) i asked exactly what she was doing that she considered "programming" and she said "oh you know, installing the programs (i.e. clicking the next box over and over, then the finish box when it's done,) and entering data into excel."
HEH--i told her that people go to school for four years or more to be computer programmers, and that it's a little bit more complex than what she's doing, and she insisted that she was programming her computer. at that point i just had to shrug...

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

***December 23***

Today's site is a nifty history one:

The Mad Monarchs Series

Containing little bios of all the unbalanced, disturbed, insane, mad, lunatic, unhinged, deranged, doolally, round the twist, or just plain nuts rulers from around the world.  Read how Domitian of Rome tortured flies or how Eric XIV of Sweden was poisoned by pea soup ala arsenic.  The Caligula bio is a must.

***December 24 (Christmas Eve)***

I doubt that many people will be around on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, owing to the stress and worry and general business of the holiday season, so today's topic is intended purely for stress-relief.

Perpetual Bubblewrap (Flash)

Virtual Bubble Wrap (Java)

Yes, sometimes you just have to pick up all the bubble-wrapping plastic and pop those little air pockets until the stress goes away.  And now you can do it online.  How helpful. :)

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

hehe! this is fantastic!

i actually had an architectural installation for one of my studios last year where i lined an entire stairwell with bubblewrap--the big kind, inch bubbles. It was on the windows, the walls, the floors, the railings, EVERYWHERE. i kept people out while installing, and put up strobe lights all over the place. then i let people all in at once and the place exploded! it was wonderful fun, people went nuts. the strobes flashing and the constant explosions made people crazy. i loved it.

BTW--i spent $200 on the bubblewrap, and about 2 days finding it and driving to get it. it's much cheaper if you click the link!

***December 25 (Christmas Day)***

A duo of Christmassy links today:

The History of Christmas

For the cynics, an examination of the pre-Christ Christmas celebrations of the Mesopotamians, Scandinavians, Greeks and Romans.

Christmas Around the World

For the non-cynics, Christmas traditions from around the world.  See the Chileans waiting for Viejo Pascuero, the recipe for Russian Nesselrode Pudding, and the Ghanaians eating goat stew.
