Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

The Xenodochium (Paragon)

In fantasy literature there are many examples of Places Between, places that allow travel between different realities, different worlds, like a hallway allows passage between different rooms.

Sometimes they are a world unto themselves, like Amber or the Hall of Worlds, the Wood Between the Worlds or Cittàgazze.  Sometimes they are a metropolis, like Tanelorn or Sigil, the City of Doors.  Sometimes they are confined to a single building, like the Temple of a Thousand Doors or the Great Library of the Dreamlands.  Sometimes they are merely a state of being between, as one travels L-Space or goes from Stone to Stone, along the lines of ‘if’, between the worlds that might be.

There is a small stone building huddled against the Southmarch city wall on Fitter’s Row, quite unexceptional from the outside, just another anonymous abode.

Once one passes through the entrance, however, the function of the edifice becomes immediately apparent.  The building is completely hollow, from the inside much larger than its façade should allow.  The interior walls are covered in hundreds of doors: stout wooden doors barred with verdigrised metal; plain townhouse entrances sporting ornamental doorknockers; archways with elaborate oak fretwork; eldritch portals leering with latent menace; cupboard doors and sliding panels; rotating bookcases and the doors of safes; transparent panes of glass with hinges and handles; fleshy-pink doors that seem to throb with an edificial heartbeat.  The floor is covered in trap-doors and pits; the ceiling offers egress to innumerable attics.

This is the Xenodochium, a building designed for the reception and entertainment of strangers and pilgrims, containing passages to and from a thousand different lines of reality.

Each and every day, usually at just after midnight board-time, a link to a different website will be posted, derived from a dozen of the better weblogs, news sites, and ‘site of the day’ pages available online.  Each link will either be funny, informative, entertaining, or just plain weird (lots of this last category).

Welcome to the Xenodochium!

***December 18***

Today's link is a four-in-one deal, following on from the popular what-X-are-you sites come:

Get your
Viking Name
Cereal Name
Exotic (Stripper) Name
Hillbilly Name

For the record, I'm Myrkjartan the Dreadful, Cracklin Banana-berry O's, The Boy Toy Warren Cox, and Bobby Joe Stanton (but everyone calls me Hound Dog).  My brother's stripper name came up with 'Smooth Forrest Hump' *chuckles inanely*

Also, if anyone has a suggestion for the Xenodochium, just send me a PM!

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Viking - All hail Jokull the Ruthless. Yggdrasil shall always protect you.

Cereal - Available in low-brow convenience marts everywhere, it's:
Sugar-Coated S'more Hoops

Exotic - The stage clears, and all eyes turn to you, The Boy Toy Hugh Johnson.

Hillbilly - Your name is Hank Arthur Stanton but everyone calls you Reggie.

Wow, that was lots of fun!

I'm hungry

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Hrm, I think I'm going to have to stay away from here... Already have trouble attending to all my regular haunts - certainly can't use links to more and more places to visit every day. *grins*

btw, remind me... Tanelorn? Sounds awfully familiar, but unlike the others, I can't pinpoint this reference. Barnes maybe, or Walter Jon Williams? *ponders*

Anyhoo, really like the description! :)

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Isn't Tanelorn Moorcock? I could be wrong, since I only read one monography and two stories by him.

Hrm, that could be... I only read Moorcock once, way back when... Six, maybe seven years ago.

Studly Warren Cox!
*tries, and fails, to contain fit of giggles*

Not to worry, Aan, most won't be daily sites, so there's just this one :)

Tanelorn is a hub of the Multiverse, from Michael Moorcock.  I'm impressed that you got all the others, although I'm not surprised about the Stone to Stone one!

Ooooh...cooool...*ahem*
well, just mention Sigil, and I'm in. Is there a Lady of Pain somewhere here...? (oh. that would be Paragon himself, wouldn't it? Something's wrong with this idea...~_^)

well, anyway -- look! I brought you a little housewarming gift: A tiny Lady of Pain doll to worship! C'mon you guys, worship it! let's see if we all turn up in the Maze (aka Forum 9) ;)

Re: The Xenodochium (Paragon)

Well...umm...that'd be pretty overbearing, hm?

*shouts*
Of course I wanna be! I mean, the Lady of Pain is just painfully cool. Iccce cold, in fact. Adorable, anyway. Never wanted to meet her, Paragon?
(ha, well, you obviously do. wouldn't worhsip the doll, otherwise!)

But then to be honest, Annah is more like me personally...*grins wickedly*

*worships the doll some more*

(well, was that just, self-worship..?)

*wondering lian*

Nice digs, Paragon.

I can only imagine the temptation to name this place the "Temple of a thousand doors".
