Dare I say..another poll
Apologies if this has already been discussed, BUT, what are people's favourite fantasy epics by authors other than Tad. My own personal favourites are the Dark Tower by Stephen King AND a Song of Fire and Ice by George RR Martin.

Re: Dare I say..another poll
Well, I have to say that the Dragon Prince trilogy by Melanie Rawn is FANTASTIC as well. I'm also going to recommend, The Ruins of Ambrai, by this fabulous woman too, although she currently is still writing this series. UMMMMMMM......the only other RECENT fantasy series I'm reading is The Eye of the World series by Robert Jordan, but that is starting to turn into a rather lengthy series, I don't see it ending before 10 books as he's only on book 8 I think. And for the sake of good memories, The Narnia Chronicles will always have a special place in my mind.

Re: Dare I say..another poll
The Gene Wolfe's New Sun series is really good. But one of my favoite books, although not an epic series, is a book by Lee J. Hindle called Dragonfall. I'm not sure if he wrote anything else after that, but this book he wrote as an entry into a SF/Fantasy contest and won, so it was published by the company. I found a used copy years ago and thought it sounded cool, and it was! A great story, but it seems hard to find a copy now. I looked on amazon.com and the name didn't even come up, but if you can find a copy, snag it. Yu can read it easily in a day, it's not long, only a couple hundred pages, but it is a wickedly cool and creepy tale.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin - abslutely stunningly captivating!
Wheel of Time by robert Jordan - as has been said he went through a 'less than optimal' period but I think Winter's Heart was a pointer in the right direction, even if it was too short by 3-400 pages.
The Dark Tower by Stepehen King - what can I say? The man is a twisted genious.

My favourites are all of Melanie Rawn's works (Dragon Prince/Star, Exiles, The Golden Key), GRRM's Song of Ice and Fire, all of Guy Gavriel Kay's stuff too - re-read Tigana recently, that one gets me every time.... Also Katharine Kerr's Deverry books. I have the newer ones (Dragon Mage series) on my summer reading list. Oooh, I don't know if you'd think these count, but the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. Love that man to death! :)

Re: Dare I say..another poll
I went to lunch with Melanie Rawn at the worldcon in Baltimore in 1998, and RoBF had just come out a couple months earlier, so we spent half the time chatting about Tad. She had all sorts of amusing anecdotes to tell us.
I've been getting antsy for Diviner and Captal's Tower (she even showed us the cover art for Diviner in Balto, for petessakes), but it looks like it'll be a few more years before we'll ever see those. *mutter* I just want CT just so I finally know who the heck Collan's parents are!
Other favorite fantasy? George RR Martin. That's how *I* want to write, man. Not that I don't fully appreciate less gritty styles of writing, but that's the sort of style I've been trying to achieve for a long time.
Diana Gabaldon (well, she has some fantasy *elements*, darnit) Sharon Shinn, Janny Wurts, Kate Elliott, Jennifer Roberson, Stephen R. Donaldson... the usual. Though I don't read too much in the way of "epics" these days...

Re: Dare I say..another poll
Other than OL and MS&T, I'm a big fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, LOTR, of course, and I think I'm getting hooked on the Continuing Time thingamagummy by Daniel Keys Moran. This is really a bad thing, and I don't reccomend it at all, because there are 33 short books planned in the series. The porblem is, ther are only four published, and it's been that way for a while. They're all out of print, and I can't find Armageddon Blues *anywhere* for less than $30. For a little dogeared paperback, no less. Aaagh! So if anyone has a copy of Armaggeddon Blues or Emerald Eyes that they'd like to give me, my birthday is February second, so feel free to send me an early birthday present.

Let's see....MS&T of course. Jordan's Wheel of Time, David Eddings, I see Melanie Rawn's Ruins of Ambrai was mentioned, I'm a fan of that. Tolkien is classic....Terry Pratchett is hilarious....there's others too that evade me at the moment.

I don't know if this counts, but since Tad has written Sci-fi, I also wanted to include Douglas Addams' Hitchhikers Guide series. I LOVE that whole series. It is such a perfect blend of Sci-fi and humor.

Uh... *ponders loudly* I think I'd HAVE to say... Um. I have absolutely no idea. I think I like the whole Robert Jordan thing just because it amuses me, and I'm still not sure if I like his writing style, even though his inane attention to detail has crept into my style. I really liked The Book of the New Sun but just could NOT get into the The Book of the Long Sun. Perhaps I will give it another try someday.

Re: Dare I say..another poll
My list of favorites include the six 'Dragon' books by Melanie Rawn, Guy Gavriel Kay's books except for the two Sarantine Mosaic books, 'A Song of Ice and Fire' by Martin, just about anything by Barbara Hambly, the Chaos and Order books by Louise Cooper, Wolfe's the Book of the New Sun, Cherryh's Book of Morgaine, Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy, the Taltos books by Brust, the Hawk and Fisher books by Simon Green, almost all of the stuff by David Gemmell I've read...um...um...is that enough?

I really didn't care for the Long Sun books either. Different tone and style than the New Sun books. Not as good, I think. Have you read any of the Short Sun books? I've been leary of buying them sight unseen (do most of my shopping at amazon now.)

Re: Dare I say..another poll
Favorite series:
* Reality Dysfunction series by Peter F. Hamilton (Doesn't count since it's sci-fi, but I don't like enough fantasy to make a good list without it)
* Faded Sun trilogy by C.J. Cherryh(sci-fi)
* Ender's Game and successive books by Orson Scott Card(sci-fi)
* Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan(even though I haven't read Winter's Heart yet
* Death Gate saga by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
In that order, too. I don't know why fantasy is so far down the list.
I went to the bookstore yesterday, and looked for George RR Martin, but I couldn't find any books by anyone with the last name of Martin(should have been between Lynn and McCaffrey(sp?), but it wasn't)
I've read A Game of Thrones, but I'm not sure yet whether or not I like it.
What about Robin Hobb has anybody read her Assassin's apprentice trilogy.....really good
Actually, I have read two of the Assassin series, but lost interest.
And, everyone prepare to gasp because I haven't read Lord of the Rings!*hears everyone gasp*(My mother read Hobbit to me when I was little, and I think she started the Lord of the Rings series, but I don't remember it, so it doesn't count)
And, get ready to gasp again if you've read these books, but I didn't find it funny.
All generalizations are false.

With Long Sun, I just didn't care about the plight of the main character. VERY leery of the Short Sun books, as praised as they are.
Robin Hobb is following up The Farseer Trilogy with The Tawny Man Trilogy book 1: Fool's Errand. Picks up Fitz's tale some 20-30 years later.

lol Flagg - very true.
My two personal favourites (which I am dissapointed have not yet been mentioned) are:
The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
In case you havn't heard of The Malazan Book of the Fallen: Its actually a series by that name. There are two books released to date, "The Gardens of the Moon," and "The Deadhouse Gates," with a third to be released in Britain this September, "Memories of Ice." Very good reading. Check out:
