Well, I'm not great with cooking myself (I can actually honestly say that I once burned water) but if anyone else has some pseudo-medieval fare they want to contribute, I'd give it a shot.  As long as it didn't have cow pancreas or something like that in it.

Well, if you leave it boiling eventually it all evapourates and the pot starts to char.  I didn't actually burn the water, but the pot was partly cremated...

Re: Music

If you like enya, you may be interested in Clannad and Marie Brennan.  If I have this correctly, Enya used to be one of the members of Clannad before she started doing her own thing.  Marie Brennan is the main singer of Clannad, in addition to being Enya's sister (I think - it may be cousin, but definately related).

Marie's also done some excellent solo work.  Clannad has dozens of albums out, and has done a lot of soudtrack work (last of the mohicens, 1492, robin hood, just to name a few).

I'd recommend Clannad's Lore for those who like Enya.  For those looking for earlier, more traditional celtic music, II and  Cran Ul are highly recommended.

Re: Music

Mm.  I love Tool and Perfect Circle, but I always seem to get on Steve Vai and Kevin Gilbert kicks.  I listen to so many different things, but it always comes back to those two guys, one of whom is *sniff* dead.

If you're looking for Celtic stuff, I picked up a CD on a whim by a group/guy called Llewellyn that turned out to be pretty good.

You know what makes really good background music for almost anything you're doing, though?  Pat Metheny.  I used to play Alpha Centauri for hours on end with Imaginary Days in the background, and now I can't listen to it without imagining little men exploring a red fungi-covered landscape...

I find that as long as it 's lyricless, or down low enough not to distract me, 'll listen to anything while reading.

Re: Music

I totally agree with ya Matt. I love Enya's sound, and it especially helps to keep me focused when I'm drawing. I've never tried it while I've been reading before, but I'll definitely have to now. (c:
I also enjoy listening to another female singer, but I have *no* idea what her name is at the moment. She's got a gorgeous voice. Blah, when I think of it I'll post her name.

Re: Music

The moods change too frequently in these books to really recommend one piece of music - possibly the best choice would be something classical, however, since the songs are longer, without changing moods as often as a cd or playlist can, and usually classical includes few or no words, interfering little with the flow of the book.

Re: Music

I think one of the exciting things about the medium that shadowmarch is taking advantage of is how much just hasn't been thought of for it yet - music with reading is a great thing, made greater because it can actually be written specifically for the story. normally that doesn't happen unless the media has some form of video / film. what else could be introduced to this?

Re: Music

would it perhaps be possible to get people to contribute some sort of period-style music to be streamed on a chapter per chapter basis? (or similar), perhaps members of the community well versed in the creation of such music?

Re: Music

We would also be happy to have people do music (in addition to art and writing) for the site once we get the legal rigamarole dealt with.

In other words, we can't let people post stuff like that until we can make sure we won't get sued over it.  Because, unfortunately, that's the way it works these days.

Re: Music

Music while reading...I can waffle on for hours about this.

Personally I had the STI mix on while reading, and it happened that Shostakovich's Waltz from the Jazz Suite No 2 came on and was perfect. Also Khatchaturian's Masquerade Waltz and the Largo from Vivaldi's Piccolo Concerto.

Coldplay. But they get distracting. You tend to drop the book and melt while listening. Unless it's William Gibson of course, for which Radiohead is absolutely necessary.

Re: Music

I have just read episodes one and two and they are really cool, but on the topic of music there are a lot of really talented artists out there writing module music (which you may or may not have heard of, lots of information on it at Modplug Homepage)
One artist who rights stuff I reckon could go really well with Shadowmarch is Warder (Vesa Norilo ) at Dreamhaven , He has some celtic stuff that suits the mood nicely.

Just an idea

Sliva

Ps Another artist with some in my opinion well suited music is
Gargoyle

Re: Music

I agree with Matt and everyone else about Enya, and if I'm not mistaken Marie Brennan is actually her sister.  Nobody has mentioned movie soundtracks for reading. John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Vangelis, and Basil Poledouris are just a few I like.

Re: Music

Dogface, very cool signature.

As for soundtracks, they are of course perfect for reading with as they are written specifically to go with some sort of story. I feel that soundtracks tend to be the closest thing to modern "classical" music.

The only problem with soundtracks normally is, is that they are intrinsically tied with the movie that it was written for. Unless of course you're James Horner, whose music sounds more or less the same for each soundtrack he's done, which wasn't a really bad thing, as he has a great sense of giving an epic scale to the music, until Titanic, which due to Celine Dion, I can never listen to!

Re: Music

As regards food...

I've done no small amount of research into the evolution of fine food, particularly around the middle ages and renaissance.  If Tad writes about any interesting dishes, I'm happy to write their recipe in ways keeping with technologies of the "time".

If anyone wants to make suggestions, I'm happy to either collate the stuff in an online database or write "doable" recipies.

Cheers,
  Me..

Oooh, yes please! "Doable" recipies, no point in giving me a recipe for venison! Good venison is so hard to find these days, don't ya know! ;-P

No, but seriously, really cool. I'd love some doable recipies!

I second that - excellent idea.  Could you give us an example of the kind of recipes that are 'doable'?  We'll corner all five senses yet!
