Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

In two minds...

After a seemingly interminable wait for Sea of Silver Light, I love the idea of having new instalments to read frequently, instead of waiting for 18 months to find out what happens.  The site is looking great, the first chapter mysterious and intriguing (as I expected).

On the other hand, I really like to do my reading curled up in bed.  I toyed briefly with the idea of dragging my monitor & keyboard into bed, but I can see this causing even larger problems than sitting at a desk...

Yay!  Another NZer!  I'd suggest that if you're really set on the bed-book experience you could print them out and take 'em with you.

Re: In two minds...

I'm also a big "in bed" reader, but since Shadowmarch is going to be in installments and I *have* to get my reading fix everyday, I'll be reading other things and won't have to set up my computer right off my bed. (Although that may not be such a bad idea anyway.)  =)

Re: In two minds...

hehe.  I got onto the site for the first time last night at 1:00am Atlantic Time, and I loaded all pertinent information and text onto my Cassiopeia Palm Computer, and took it to bed with me.

Re: In two minds...

I could read off my palm pilot, of course, but I like to read outside... and I'm not going to drag the monitor out there.

Re: In two minds...

Hmmm... I guess I'm lucky in that , even though I like to lie down to read, I spend all day at my 'puter so I am terribly used to doing reading here. Come to think of it... I usually only spend an hour or two away from my computer. Does anyone else have this problem? I get up and go right to my 'puter, usually foresaking caffiene until I am in pain. Then after a brief break for tea, I come back, staying at my computer until I am faint from hunger. After I find food, I sit here untill I am nearly exhausted. Oh, I don't just sit there and stare at it! I do stuff with it! Isn't everyone this way?

Re: In two minds...

Yup, sounds familiar - minus the caffeine part, I'm not a coffee/tea person myself. Reader: "What's that? A Brit that doesn't drink tea?!"
Me: "Yes, I'm afraid so..." *hangs head in shame*

:D

Re: In two minds...

Unfortunately, I am that way as well.. Working as a SysAdmin (6+ years at an ISP, now at a geophysical company with their cluster) I have been on a computer with my coffee for the most part of the day throughout that time... It doesn't seem in immanent danger of change at this point either... It's a good thing I like my job :)

Re: In two minds...

I work in a small computer company, so I spend most of my life staring at, or into computers, or planning to... then I get home, check my emails, play some games... but usually I use the computer for finding out information quickly.  I don't tend to spend a lot of time sitting and contemplating what I'm reading, because I ususally don't have time. And printing it out is really not the same (even if I had a printer at home... )

SO I guess I'm just going to have to get used to it.

so much for trying to cut down my computer time :)

Re: In two minds...

If I'm not reading, or cooking some food, I'm usually at a computer.  Work, webcomics, news, bulletin boards, irc, games, lesiure programming, etc, etc, it all adds up.  Although with summer here, and the BEAUTIFUL weather we've been having (ignoring the last few days, that is) I SHOULD be spending more time outside.  Ah well.

Uruloki, Jendaiya: yay! More Canadians!

Actually, I'm fairly suprised how many people there are on here which are non-USAians...

Re: In two minds...

I don't even have a real computer *job* unless you want to count freelance web design. But I do that for free, so it's not a job. I just sit, write, research, ocassionally game a bit, make web sites for fun and it seems to take up all my life. Someone once suggested that I go outside! Can you imagine!? Out there, where you can be touched by the sun, fresh air and... whatever else is out there. Ick! Especially the sun part. I live in British Columbia, on one of the islands. We only get a little bit of sun, why would I want to go out in it? Not only that, but another person suggested I might want to try having a social life! Why would anyone want to talk to someone IRL? Bizarre, I thought, but quaint in an old-fashioned  way. Still, between the thought of sunshine and RL people I will always end up with my beloved computer. He is much more accomodating than most creatures. And I can turn down his brightness at will.

Jendaiya

I'm really much more well adjusted than this makes me sound.

And yes, very nice to see some fellow Canadians here!

Jendaiya:  Really?  What island?  I used to live on Hornby Island, near Courtenay and Comox... Before that I lived on the Queen Charlottes (no sun there at all - only rain....) But as you can see, I've given in to the urge to move to the big city....

Re: In two minds...

I live on beautiful Vancouver Island. At least I think it's beautiful. There are trees and grass and mountains and the lovely ocean staring back at me through the window. Could be fake, but I think it's real.

Re: In two minds...

Ah, I keenly miss the island these days...  I can't even see the water from where I am now, and although the mountains of the north shore are visible, it's not the same when you're in the city.....

Waitasec.  We're supposed to be discussing being of two minds about Shadowmarch.

Well, I'm not of two minds at all - I really, really, really hope this works out - not only because it promises to be an excellent story, but because there has been no successful (commercially) attempts yet to do this kind of thing.  Stephan King tried to do a web-based novel or short story, I belive, but it seems to have faded into obscurity.  If Tad Williams can pull this off, hopefully we will see others following in his footsteps.

Re: In two minds...

Having been raised on computers, having been born into a family of technoheads, having moved in with an ex-sysadmin-come-R&D-programmer and having brought about 5 computers with me...having four in the dining room instead of a dining table...
'bout th' only time 'm not sitting in this chair is 'f 'm sleeping, at work or at uni.
Usually I forget that th' couch is a hell 'f a lot more comfortable 'n end up doing my reading here....hehe
