WorldCon in ... 2010?

Assuming nobody seriously throws their hat in the ring this year, the only bid for WorldCon in 2010 is Melbourne, Australia.  Shads says it's our turn to hop to her side of the Pacific, and I am planning on doing just that.

(I'm not going to ACTIVELY do anything til they actually win the bid in August, of course...)

Anyway, it seems like a good excuse to go Down Under, and make a two or three week trip out of it at that - make it a multi-destination flight there or back and hit up New Zealand while I'm in that end of the world, things like that.

Re: WorldCon in ... 2010?

It's way too far out to plan, still - but I at least am always up for a trip down under. (Any excuse to return to Lake Tekapo, really.) :)

[also: moving this to The Meeting Place to live alongside the other worldcon threads.]

Ooooooooh....!

You totally know you're going, Miiru.  I mean, we already leave great sweeping tracks of destruction through every city we visit and Melbourne would be no different, but just imagine what we could do to a couple hundred people in a metal tube hurtling at 600mph through the sky WHO CAN'T GET AWAY FROM US.

Re: WorldCon in ... 2010?

Which reminds me, I will have to invest in a new digital camera before then.  I lost mine in Santo Domingo last spring.  :/

...in fact, I ought to get one before I go to Portland OR at the end of May.  One cannot travel without a camera!

ZOMG!!1! I doubt Damon and I can make it across to Oz as we have a trip to europe to fund at the end of this year, but if anyone makes it over to NZ we'll happily put you to work. Put you up I mean, put you up. We wouldn't dream of sending our guests to our death mines. No no no. Did I say death mines? I meant happy fun sugar mines. Yes. *shifty eyes*

Actually, depending on when it is, I might be persuaded to visit Melbourne.

When in 2010 will it be? It'll be the (hopeful) last year of my Ph.d. Candidature - and I dunno when the Government is going to order me back to my country that year. But if I can make it, I am SO TOTALLY THERE.

Re: WorldCon in ... 2010?

The con should be in early-mid August - which is late winter in Australia, mind you all, but based on what I've read, it's not too miserable at that time of year.  Not much snow, seem to hit around 40-45F for the low and 60 for the high.

And I will *totally* go mooch off Damon & Bandit and Binky.  I mean, houseguest!

There is a distant possibility my mother will go (because she's also dying to go down under), but I suspect that's not a decision she'd make until six months out.

Ahhh, but you missed the fact that it's in Melbourne.

Sure, it may not be freezing cold and snowing, but I certainly wouldn't count on it not being miserable...hehe

Re: WorldCon in ... 2010?

Melbourne weather is not that different to Wellington in winter, in that it's unpredictable and on the cool and wet side without any reasonable expectation of snow.  It's a great city for indoors stuff, and there are a whole heap of good shops and cafes, especially if you like cakes and chocolate.

August is winter in this part of the world.  December-February can be pretty uncomfortable at times in Melbourne, I've heard, but it can also be quite nice.

I've always wanted to visit Australia, and this would be an excellent 'excuse' - though I'll hold off making plans until the bid is successful.  ;-)

I can deal with chilly and wet - that's what the Elf Fantasy Fair was like in the Netherlands, after all, and about the same time of year, too!

Re: WorldCon in ... 2010?

*LOL*

Too bad I already have other plans for 2010... Yes I really am mad that way. Since I'm planning/hoping to go to Canada again next year, we're planning to hike the coast to coast in 2010. And as we want luggage transport and b&b's it'll be expensive.
