Mabinogi's Recording Studio
So I'm finally going to stake my claim in the Neighborhood.
There's monitors (speakers that is) on the walls, a comfy couch in the corner, and racks of interesting equipment with lights and knobs and sliders, and an enormous mixer in front of a window through to the next room.
Through the window there's a room with a piano, a drum kit in the corner, guitars on stands against the walls and microphones scattered haphazardly.
This is a place for creating and performing music, talking about the process, and just hanging out with the musos :)
..and then one day you find, ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.. My Musical Experimentations

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
And to start things off - I just had a new addition to my harem ;)
Caitlin's grandfather gave me the long term loan of his clarinet, so I could play along with Caitlin when she's practicing. Of course, I'm going to do a hell of a lot more with it than that - I printed out a fingering chart yesterday, and I've pretty much got the hang of the lower register, just need some more practice to get my embouchure in shape so I can reliably manage the middle register, and I'll be able to start recording with it.
I would have tried something already, except I still don't quite have a functioning setup at the moment - I thought I'd got my laptop set up, but I can't seem to tell it to record from line in, rather than the integrated microphone - I had hoped that I'd be able to avoid purchasing a real audio solution in the short term, but it looks like one of these is closer in my future than I thought.

You know how you used to have your 'Tuesday challenge'?
Jonathan Coulton did that. He called it the 'thing-a-week'. He's kinda famous now, y'know. :P
So when is the next tuesday challenge dammit?

As soon as I get a functional recording setup again :) Which could in the next week or so if I can beat my laptop into submission, or a little later if I have to throw money at it...heh

I am contemplating, far far in the future an electric drum kit. That would be ace!
And an electric piano. And a violin. And a 5000W swr head with not one but two gigantic Hartke stacks. That would be the shiz nizzle.
*dreams*

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
Yeah I want an electric piano or keyboard. I started composing Lady Dissonance on piano. Just hooked up my laptop near the piano and set up Audacity. The soundcard/mic setup for this laptop is pretty good. I miss that.

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
I want a set of Roland V-Drums or similar - that way I can practice without disturbing the neighbours (or more importantly, embarrassing myself infront of the whole street), but also, I'll be able to record my playing as MIDI - the money I'd save on microphones would more than make up for the price ;)

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
Meh.
Listening to the tunes on my /buskers directory I am newly reminded of how pitchy and reedy they all sound, but that was mostly because of the non-existent recording equipment and meh, suckiness. I really need to practice and rerecord everything. Rusty. So rusty. And I didn't bring my djembe's to Australia either.

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
Saving all the songs on the directory, I'm thinking of taking them all down and slowly rerecording now that I have something resembling a semi-decent audio setup. My newer "Squiggle" files are of far superior sound quality. (the artisan-made classical guitar helps too ;) )

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
So, after an evening of fighting with my laptop - I finally managed to get to the point where I could record stuff again. So here's the result. It's just a short improvisation, with clarinet and guitar solos. Very rough, and not particularly interesting or unique, but it served its purpose.
Also, the trouble with saxophonists attempting to play the clarinet - even ones that haven't played in years - is that it ends up sounding more like a soprano sax than a clarinet...heh

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
I like it. The clarinet sounds really good, nice and crisp.
I think I'm going to come to canberra and steal your recording studio.

Uh, I mean, no. No I'm not... >->

Yes, overall I really liked the production of that piece. I can't tell the different re: saxophone and clarinet anyway so it sounds good to me :)
And sooo prog-rock, hehe.

heh, yeah it's shamelessly Pink Floyd influenced. The original piano sounded like the beginning of Us and Them, and I had to forcibly stop myself from using the chord sequence from Echoes. It's well and truly in my comfort zone - and the sort of thing I used to do when at high school.
Next time I'll have time to be more creative...

I was thinking of Pink Floyd, but more of you making a direct allusion/tribute. Very nifty, either way :)

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
*grumbles about reverb*
Also there's a lot of night sounds the laptop's mic is picking up.
I deleted my "buskers" folder, I really couldn't bear to listen to how bad the old files are. And I'm really (finally!) reworking some of those songs but I worry I am not being fair to songs like "And You're There", because it's the kind of song a young girl (which I was) would write and I can't sing it these days without a cynical slant. I even changed the I to "she" and the "you" to "He", but it was like writing a completely different song, heh. Also, now the chords annoy me. Heh. Maybe it is time to install that drum machine program. Maybe drums'll help.

Hang a really big thick heavy blanket or doona behind you and, if you've got some, to each side. It will help stop the sounds from bouncing off the wall behind you ang going into the mic. That should help with the reverb a bit.

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
Or you could get an acoustic pickup instead of a microphone which won't pick up as much background noise but the tone of the recording will be slightly different.

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
I tried recording on the bed yesterday, set my laptop up, w/ pillows around etc. Sounded slightly better but still not too happy w/ the sound. Also, my playing needs a heckuva lot of improvement. The rustiness is apparent. Practice, practice and moar practice needed.
And yes, I really should invest in proper recording equipment at some point.
I also want a digital piano for my Lady Dissonance. :(

Re: Mabinogi's Recording Studio
For an acoustic guitar you'll want a condenser mic.
I use a Behringer B2, which was relatively cheap, and seems to do a pretty good job. I've heard good things about Behringer's C- series condensers too. The B-2 is about $300 Australian (it was 350 when I bought it), and the C-1 is around $89. Of course with condensers you need to make sure you've got a preamp or mixer that will provide phantom power - so that pushes the cost up, but then you'll probably want a mixer at some point anyway.
