I love how they are trucking in 150 loads of snow per day. No great cost associated with that is there???

Re: Infinity's
No, can't cost much. And I'm SOOOOOO happy to have my taxes spent on it. *sigh*
Oddly enough, as much as I hate how Vancouverites are being treated and how much money is being spent, I'm looking forward to watch the events. I'm not going, though some of my family is. I just would rather sit home in comfort than brave the crowds.
I do have this odd feeling that the opening ceremonies will be horribly embarrassing. The people in charge seem to consist of a bunch of fuddy-duddies with little taste. Though the red mittens are freaking cute. :)

Re: Infinity's
I have the red mittens -- I'm such a geek.
And I've always been a geek about the Olympics so I am pretty excited for them as well. I got to go to the opening ceremonies & some events in Atlanta in '96. I am also excited for the kids to watch the opening ceremonies to sort of put it all together - they saw the torch come through Calgary so... did you see it in Revelstoke? I will be geeking out over the whole thing actually, who am I kidding? It will be me and my TV for a couple of weeks!

Re: Infinity's
You are not alone Calesta!
I do not have the red mittens, but I do have to know who wins 1,2,3 in everything!!! I will be watching a lot of coverage and what I do not watch, I will read about in the newspaper the next day so I will know who won what the day before and each day's current medal count of all the medal winning countries. The only misgiving that I have about the Olympics is that it is not being broadcast by CBC this time around. I have issues with CTV and am somewhat leery that the network will give clear, concise, objective coverage.

Red mittens are hella cuter than chrome pick-up trucks, aren't they?!?!

Re: Infinity's
I've got the read mittens, too. They are not only cute, but they're warm. :)
@Peter-- I didn't realize that CBC wouldn't have the Olympics. WTF? I don't want to watch them on CTV. *sigh* I have always enjoyed CBC's Olympic broadcast.
@Calesta-- I didn't get to see the torch when it came through town. I kinda regret it, but town was so jam-packed I prolly wouldn't have seen it if I had gone. I have a family member carrying the torch on the 11th. That's pretty darn cool, I think. :)
I'm really looking forward to watching the events. We should start an Olympics watch thread.
I'm worried about the opening ceremony. I haven't looked it up to see what's happening--if they're even saying--but I have this fear that it will be terrible. Something involving Celine Dion or Shania or, god forbid, Anne Murray singing and then some cute school kids doing something and then a performance by First Nations that could have been awesome if they were allowed to do it their way and not have it choreographed by someone who hasn't a clue then some fireworks, which will suck because it'll be daytime and raining... Does that sound paranoid? Have I put too much thought into this? I just can't imagine it being anywhere near as good as what China did. If we get a quarter that good I'll be shocked.
That said, shouldn't Stompin' Tom sing The Hockey Song to start off the hockey tourney? :)

Re: Infinity's
@Jendaiya--I do not think that you are being paranoid at all. I think your analysis of the opening ceremonies is clear, concise and very realistic. I would expect that some of the elements that you described will be part of the opening ceremonies.
Likewise, CTV is not my first choice for Olympic coverage. CBC, for the most part, always approaches the Olympics in a very objective manner. I am somewhat suspicious that CTV will not follow that approach. This leaves us then with NBC as our only other option. Though, in my case, I have a third option of watching the Olympics in French on "V".

Re: Infinity's
I'm reserving judgement on CTV. I am hopeful.... maybe I'll be crushed within the first few hours. Who knows?
My favorite entertainment gossip website has spoilers for the opening ceremonies (she's based in Vancouver & a CTV correspondant). I did NOT look. I'm most curious about who is carrying the torch into the stadium & lights the cauldron. two more sleeps!
@ Jen - that's really cool that someone you know is in the torch relay! What an amazing experience to have.

I'm trying not to get excited, then I won't get all let down if the opening sucks. :)

Re: Infinity's
I am rather curious as to how they are going to light a cauldron inside a domed stadium without literally burning the roof off!

And most important time/date in my household is the men's hockey final on Sun Feb 28.... have I mentioned that the way to get my son to do anything is to ask him what Sydney Crosby would do?

Re: Infinity's
*sits down with Jen and Calesta*
I'm supposed to be researching - but i'm watching Canada V Russia - the scores 7 to 3 four minutes left of the 2nd quarter....
I was lucky, i thought I wouuld be chasing the torch through the region and back to Point Claire, but I was lucky in that Hubby picked up both boys from each of their schools, met me from work and we managed to watch it go through our village. It was pretty cool. My youngest was very lucky as someone who carried the torch took theirs into the school talked about it and let the children hold it - I thought that was pretty neat.
I am really, really enjoying these Olympics
One of the best bits of the opening ceremonies was Rick Hanson bringing the torch into the stadium - has there ever been a disabled person bring in the torch to an Olympic event(besides the para olympics)?
It was about time, i think.
I love the Rick Hanson 'The difference Makers' segments - It makes it a bit more personal when you see the athletes compete.
What is your favourite sport?
Usually I'm all over the skiing, but this year I've even enjoyed watching the curling - I hadn't realised how tactical that can be.

Re: Infinity's
They have been awesome, haven't they?
I've enjoyed the new ski type events, the moguls, the ski cross, the aerials. Mr Calesta loves the curling, but I haven't been watching too much - and of course lots of hockey!!

Re: Infinity's
I haven't seen any result for todays events - it's been curling since I sat down this evening.
It looks like Sweden is playing better than in the round robin game...still these Canadian women won't go down easy if at all I think.

I felt so bad for Cheryl Bernard. She really knew she missed the shot.
*sigh*
Such a fun olympics. I think I will be sad tomorrow. Plus I will have to find something other than my canada hoodie to wear.

Re: Infinity's
To assuage my sadness that the olympics are over I watched the first two episodes of the Xfiles today.
It helped a little.... I forgot how much I loved the show. Although didn't forget altogether or I wouldn't have finally acquired the series.

Yeah, I did that, too. It feels so strange to have no Olympics--but the X-Files sure rock. :) We're already about halfway through season one. And loving it. :)

Re: Infinity's
oh, the X-files!!
When that series first came out I watched it religiously.
I ought to go and buy those....we've started buying series we enjoyed and it's so much fun. We watch a couple of episodes when there's nothing interesting on TV (which seems to be most nights recently, excepting the Olympics!)
I'm revisiting Battlestar Galactica at the moment, seeing as I missed the beginning of Caprica on Space.

Re: Infinity's
I've only got 4 episodes done - pesky kids & their field trips get in my way!! But I am loving watching young Mulder & Scully before the whole conspiracy stuff really got going.
@AJ - did you guys watch The Wire? Mr Calesta and I picked up the DVD's last year and LOVED them. Its so nice to be able to watch a show straight through with no breaks in between seasons.
