I have not. I started ages ago and couldn't get in, which annoys me because I know they're damn good books.

I did something similar with LotR. I started the trilogy when I was eleven or twelve and had to set it aside and come back in my late teens. When I tried the second time, I devoured the books in a matter of a couple of days.

Have had that many times too... some books you just need to "be ready" for...hehehe...

I've started that about twenty times and never got further than de tenth page.....

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

From his post, it doesn't sound like it's even started development yet.  If the deal does go through, I'm guessing the game will be a 2009 or 2010 title, which means we probably won't see any kind of internal alpha or public beta releases until at least late 2008.

Otherland MMO! Oh my goodness :) I'm there. I'm also handy with a 3d app, so when you start hiring (or choose your dev studio) let me know about it and I'll put in an application there.

Great news TAD!

Thanks for this "subterranean work".

I wonder if the french-american UBISOFT will be a partner of your project.

They have done a good job with their game "BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL" (2003) and have recently made a alliance with studios in Quebec for making videomovies linked to new videogames.

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

Ubisoft isn't entirely to blame for the masterpiece that was Beyond Good & Evil.  Michel Ancel's brain deserves much more of the credit, since it was his genius that brought Beyond Good & Evil to life in the first place (along with Rayman of course).

I agree though, Ubisoft would be another excellent choice in partners.

I'm happy as long as you don't go EA's way.  EA has a very bad habit of churning out half-baked games and driving any series they touch into the ground.

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

Tad mentioned this at the reading last night.  He indicated that the contracts were signed or very nearly so and he indicated that the program was being developed by a company in Germany.

And then he admitted that he is David Hasselhoff because they love him in Germany!

LOL!

Oh nooo... the lame David Hasselhoff jokes. Really, no one knows him anymore in Germany, but this seems to be the one thing that the world remebers us by. Why does this continue to haunt us? *sobs*

the joke only makes sense to American audiences (because we are lowbrow and whatever other bad stereotype you can add).

I'm sure the rest of the world doesn't care.

I'd be inclined to naively belive you, but there's this lecturere from Singapore who had way too much fun torturing us with lame David Hasselhoff (and Modern Talking) jokes. The paiiin!

Ditto for that horrid...horrid picture that bandit posted. *more sobs* You have an infinite stack of bizarro pics, don't you, one for each occasion, however marginal.           You're like the S'march Corbis of weird pics!  I draw my floppy, ostrich-plumed hat before you.

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

Well an Otherland MMO would than probably get thematically in competition with Shadowrun, which will appear in late 2007...
they will have a healthy margin of 2 or 3 years...
even though beeing excited about an Otherland MMO, Im although rather doubtfully, to be honest.
There will be simply too many MMOs on the Market to feed all there Wrights

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

I think the Otherland MMO would be best played with the Emotiv helmet (or one it's successors that allows Playstation 9 functionality :P) I think it would be spectacular if Otherland was reserved for the first round of neural input/output games, but who knows how far we are from that being the norm. I guess the military will have to have it's run with the technology before we get in on it.

Off topic, but at the rate Sony is bleeding Bens, I'm not really expecting a PlayStation 9. :P

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

I hope the game isn't mainly set in the realm of virtual reality. It would be sweet to play unhooked too, opening up a bunch more of possibilities. It would be neat to partake in parts of the books, or be able to make your own virtual mod for others to play, and to maybe even be able to get a job in the game to afford things for your real life house, when your not hooked in. And guilds and factions, or whatever, would be incredibly easy. I see a game like this being very mod friendly and expansion-pack gold. Definitely, the ideas are endless.

Well, if he isn't serious, then he sure knew how to yank our chains.

I guess that could be added to the already humongous list of his talents. :P

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

Yeah, but I have a feeling he was being serious. I'm pretty sure he's already tried in some ways to create a video game before. I think that's what he said to me when I visited him during the first Shadowmarch tour.

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

An Otherland MMMO? Hmmm...

I came across a tribute to Otherland in Second Life back when I was playing it--it was unfinished--as in 'very'--but the intent was there.

An MMO is such a difficult thing to do right. WoW has managed to pull it off, after pouring gazillions of money into it. Other games--Vanguard, DDO,--are not that good, IMHO. They just require so much work, so much attention to detail, and so much money.

(Then again, there's EVE ONLINE, which took a very different approach to the MMO world, with much less money, and made one helluva game.)

I'd like to see an Otherland MMO, but one that makes me drop my jaw in awe. It deserves no less.

Re: Otherland could be a WoW killer!

I heard Second Life is a good game, except that the controls are very clumsy.
