Re: For the dancing Dutchies (and other mad travelers)

Here's the list of dances Libra and I learnt at Castlefest (I might have made some mistakes along the way, but I'm sure Libra will correct me when she comes by):

Andro
row dance
- hook your pinkies to the pinkies of your neighbours
- step left with your left foot
- step left with your right foot
- step left with your left foot
- pause
- during these four steps your hands make a figure nine, starting at the bottom, going up and forward, followed by a slight loop back down
- step in place with your right foot
- step in place with your left foot
- step in place with your right foot
- pause
- during these four steps your hands make the reverse figure from the one before

Magic circle
circle dance, formed by male-female pairs (in a perfect world) in one big circle(where each man holds two ladies and vice versa)
- the ladies take four steps to the inside of the circle while the men are clapping
- the ladies turn around and take four steps back
- the men now take four steps to the middle (while the women clap), on the fourth step they raise their right arm and turn around
- the men take four steps back and go back to the next lady (who was on their left in the circle)
- the right hands are placed on each others right shoulder and the left hands are clasped
- the couples step-spin round (in 8?)
- the man takes the ladies hand from his shoulder with his right hand and spins her so she is before him (taking her left hand in his left in the process)
- 16 steps forward (= 2 times 8)
- the man spins the lady so they form one big circle again

Gigue (French jig)
circle dance, formed by male-female pairs (in a perfect world) where the pair is side by side holding hands, the males forming the inner circle
- four steps forward
- turn around (so you face the other way) (switching hands)
- four steps backward (i.e. in the same direction as before)
- four steps forward
- turn around
- four steps backword
- skip-step towards your partner
- skip-step away from your partner
- change your position and hands (i.e. the males are now on the outside)
- skip-step towards your partner
- skip-step away from your partner
- the male spins the lady and steps forward and in (so he is on the inner circle again and with the next lady)
- repeat until the music stops

Scottish

polka

hogo or horo (I think)
circle or row dance with hands clasped (iirc)
- cross step right with left foot
- step right with right foot
- kick right with left foot
- kick left with right foot

Other dances that I don't know yet:
bourrée
mazurka
hanter dro

OOH, nice, I just discovered a Dutch site about all kinds of folk dancing events: www.folkbal.nl

What the... Last february there was an event in my own village!

*giggles at Sahi's dance-mania*

I'm soooo sorry, but I do not have the cash to join you at Folkwood.... I'm so unbelievably bummed out about it, I could cry... Because I miss Castlfest... and it would be absolutely perfect to have one more day of that free-feeling...

But never mind... I'll join in next year (am already looking into finding a place to dance regularly)

I just have one adjustment to your dance explanations.. (see next post)

Magic circle
circle dance, formed by male-female pairs (in a perfect world) in one big circle(where each man holds two ladies and vice versa)
first everyone takes four steps towards the middle of the circle and then they take four steps back (repeat twice)
- the ladies take four steps to the inside of the circle while the men are clapping
- the ladies turn around and take four steps back
- the men now take four steps to the middle (while the women clap), on the fourth step they raise their right arm and turn around
- the men take four steps back and go back to their lady (who was on their left in the circle)
- the right hands are placed on each others right shoulder and the left hands are clasped the couple put their right foot against each other's
- the couples step-spin round (in 8? Yes! in eight...hehehe)
- the man takes the ladies hand from his shoulder with his right hand and spins her so she is before him (taking her left hand in his left in the process)
- 16 steps forward (= 2 times 8)
- the man spins the lady so she is now on his right in the big circle again (everyone facing inwards)
now the dance starts over, but now when the gentleman steps back into the circle he takes the next lady as his dance-partner

Gigue (French jig)
circle dance, formed by male-female pairs (in a perfect world) where the pair is side by side holding hands, the males forming the inner circle
- four steps forward
- turn around (so you face the other way) (switching hands)
- four steps backward (i.e. in the same direction as before)
- four steps forward
- turn around
- four steps backword
- skip-step towards your partner I would say it's more like a little jump
- skip-step away from your partner
- change your position and hands (i.e. the males are now on the outside) the gentleman spins his lady in front of him to his left
- skip-step towards your partner
- skip-step away from your partner
- the male spins the lady underneath his left arm towards the next gentleman
- repeat until the music stops

Scottish

polka
Quite an easy dance much like the quick-step.
First the pose: The gentleman's right hand lays in between the lady's shoulder blades. The lady's left hand lies gently on her gentleman's right shoulder, she hangs back a bit with the gentleman supporting her. The
gentleman's left hand lightly holds his lady's right hand.

-Jump onto left foot (from lady's point of view, right for the males).
- Pull in right foot
- Small skip on the place
- Jump on right foot
- Pull in left foot
- Small skip on the place
And repeat until the music stops or you and/or your partner tumbles onto the earth due to exhaustion...
Of course the gentlemen are free to spin their ladies as much as they like (and their ladies can support)

hogo or horo (I think)
circle or row dance with hands clasped (iirc)
- cross step right with left foot
- step right with right foot
- kick right with left foot
- kick left with right foot

Re: For the dancing Dutchies (and other mad travelers)

Yes and what a lure it was....

Had such a great time... *still bouncing*

And two more dance-explanations:

Scottish:

Take the pair-dance position. (see polka)

- small skip to left (ladies-description), pass on place (1.2.3)
- small skip to right, pass on place (1.2.3)
- four slower steps in which you can fit endless variations (see below) (1_2_3_4)

Var.1 Simply stay in dance position and make a turn.
Var.2 Spin your lady (once, twice, thrice or, if you're really fast, four times)
Var.3 Let go of partner and walk a circle ending up in the same position)
Var.4 Spin your lady and then spin yourself
Var.5 Hold both hands (of partner), bring them up into the air and turn around underneath them, ending up in the starting postion
Var.6 Think of anything you can do in four counts and make it look good.

Mazurka:

Take the dance position as described before.
This is not a very easy dance, it's in six counts, but on the third count, instead of putting down your foot on the ground, you lift it up in the air, so...

- Walk to left counting: one two SKIP four five six.
- Walk to right counting: one two SKIP four five six.
And repeat.
And once you get this, you can start putting in spins etc...

I'll try to think of a better description, but sofar this is the best I can come up with.

Bouree:

It's also a pair-dance, BUT with a difference. This is actually a seducing dance, the partners do not touch each other. It is danced in lines, gentlemen on one side, ladies on the other side.
1. Using a "shuffle"step, starting on the LEFT foot the partners come near to each other,
2. looking into each other's eyes they do another shuffle step, now starting with the right foot.
2a. two shuffle-steps back to the starting position, the first starting on the LEFT foot, the second on the RIGHT foot. (leaving your left foot free to start shuffling again)
3. This we repeat four times.
4. Now the music changes and with the same shuffle step the partners near each other, then do a one-fourth of a turn facing each other Lady on the right, gentleman on the left(forming with all the other pairs one big line)
5. Now comes the difficult part. We need to get to the other side and we do that in a clock-wise spin, which feels very weird as we just did one-fourth of a turn counter-clock-wise.
6. This we repeat also four times and then we start from the beginning again.

Well, if I missed anything, Sahi is sure to help out...

Have fun!!

Re: For the dancing Dutchies (and other mad travelers)

I had a smashing weekend! I am positively going to drag Ivo along next year. (As being too shy to ask people to dance and not having a dance partner is nowhere near as much fun as having a dance partner along.)

hanter dro
Simple row dance

- step left with left foot
- step left with right foot
- step left with left foot
- pretend to step left with right foot (right foot touches left foot or makes a small kick to the left or something like it to mark the fourht count)
- step right with right foot
- pretend to step right with left foot (see step four)

- repeat!

tricot
A mixture of An dro and Anter dro. You have to listen very carefully to the music to know which steps to use, as it switches to and fro.

Well, lets see if I can find the guts to ask Ruben along...

Maybe someone at work will come along... I still have some time...

Although, of course I do have to leave on holiday the next day...

Lets ponder this for a while...

Re: For the dancing Dutchies (and other mad travelers)

You'll have to go to the balfolk site to find out, cause I don't know.

But I just asked Ivo and he doesn't want to dance. *pouts* Of course I'm not giving up on it just yet, but I'm not quite sure I can change his mind before the workshop.

Re: For the dancing Dutchies (and other mad travelers)

Great, no plans for september 30th yet. And it's far enough from other events that I can go there without feeling guilty. :)

11.30 - 15.00 workshop (15 EUR)
16.00 - 22.00 balfolk (6 EUR)

So are we going to both? We'll need to bring our own food. (They say it's going to be a picknick if we all bring food.) Drinks are on sale there.

Location: Moira in Utrecht (Wolvenstraat 10)

Well never mind, we'll figure that out...

I say we go to both, but I'll not stay until the end, because the next morning my flight leaves at 7.20 in the morning, so I'll have to get a bit of sleep.

Yay!!! Another dance event!!!
