Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'
-    Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: IMPORTANT SHADOWMARCH INFO!

News!!!!News!!!!News!!!!News!!!!News!!!!

With the various comics just finished or coming, I want to see release dates well before the item is released. Paticularly if there is any future small press stuff like the Subterranean collection where the print run is so small.

Possibly a blog if Tad has the time and inclination. As I always find him so damn amusing, it might be fun to hear the period rants.

Also, I agree with the tour schedule info being a required.

Finally, I would like a section of the site dedicated to me personally with monthly notes from Tad how he would be nothing today without me. Nothing flashy mind you, just a periodic "Thanks Brad!!!!"  ;)

Re: IMPORTANT SHADOWMARCH INFO!

Well, since I mentioned it in this topic, thought I should post the link now that I've found it. Off topic, but only mildly in our usual manner.

Guthwulf's MST thesis
and
the full site, indeed linked from guthwulf.com

To get to the old message board, click on the "interactive" link. It's still there, though the last post was in 2003 or so.

Okay, now back to your regularly scheduled topic and the Avatar Wars. And yes, I'm pretty sure we'll be having a News page of some sort on the new site which will be a Good Thing(tm).

& in fact, I believe it's Olaf's site (shadowmarch.net) that already has a great deal of the news and bibliography and more in German. The Interviews page is amazing. As I recall, the bibliography that's there started from a list I was running years ago, but Olaf's been much better at keeping it up to date. Now if I just read German. (Oops. Almost had a smilie moment there.)

Olaf has some of (all of?) the various covers for War of the Flowers and some covers for Shadowmarch & Shadowplay. Guth's MST site had a gallery of pre-Otherland covers as well, iirc. Ah yes, here: The Covers. Get there from here.

Re: IMPORTANT SHADOWMARCH INFO!

Hee - just looked up myself on the Treehouse and found me, in 2001, mixing it up with Jaime on the subject of whether some of the more adult relationships in Otherland and MST were appropriate reading material for kids.  I think I got into an argument with Marian at one point about inside-out cows, of all things.

I think most of all, we need to keep the people.

Re: IMPORTANT SHADOWMARCH INFO!

Some other boards actually tell you the total amount of time you've been logged on, like ever; in days, hours and minutes.  I think most of us probably don't want that as it'll scare the wullies out of me if I try and think how much time I've actually spend on here, and I'm kinda part time.

It would be sweet if our user pages were more customizable. That might satisfy the avatar-need to some degree.

Oh, another thought... Just like being sent to the last page of the topic instead of the first page after posting a reply, it would be nice to see the last page of the topic while writing a reply. You know that box where you can re-read and quote the other posts while writing a reply?

No thumbscrews for that one, though. I must remember the value of my thumbs and set priorities. Just imagine - what would my VR life look like, ifIcouldn'tusemythumbs?

When posting a reply, could the little window below that lets you review the other posts in the thread be listed in reverse order so the likely most significant posts are more readily readable?

The site you remember, Binky, is the old Tad Williams Message Board which was put up by Eric Neuman. Damon/paragon, Firsfron, bandit, sam, Rook, lian, and quite a few others including some of the Lysters hung out there. Marian & Pandy & Maladroit found that board prior to the Lyst, as I recall, but there was quite a bit of member crossover between the two.

Ah, memories!

[b]
Prior to Eric's TWMB, however, was Guthwulf's Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Thesis project, which included a MB which was quite active. I think it predated the Lyst (though not by much) and the TWMB. Several old-timers (like myself*) managed to keep an eye on all three.

I never kept an eye on the Lyst, but was a frequent visitor to the TWMB and the Interactive Thesis, starting in November 1997 when I first got online; my first post to the TWMB was in November of 1997 (I know because I later looked it up). Both the boards were thriving in those days, with many active users, and it was obvious they had already been around for a while.
http://web.archive.org/web/200105030122 … euman/tad/  indicates the Tad Williams Fan Page was around since at least Octover 1996. http://web.archive.org/web/200107150110 … tbook.html  indicates the Interactive thesis began around December 1996.

Actually, I had first seached "online" (and I use the word "online" loosely) for a Tad Williams message board as early as 1992, but either nothing existed, or my high school didn't subscribe to the right electronic message board services, or I wasn't looking in the right place. Or any combination of the above.

[b]
For a short while, Tad had a MB thread over on SFFnet. I have not checked there in over five years, though, so have no idea if it's still around. Seems like there was also an MB on the Tor publisher site sometime around the time the first LEGENDS was released. Tad posted occasionally to both of those (he's so generous to his fans; really is remarkable).

Yes; it must have been crazy for him, back in those days, to keep track of a half-dozen message boards. It's remarkable that he ever got anything written.

[b]
Yep, 10 years is forever on the net. Also really remarkable.

Yeah. Only 9 years and 2 months for me, though. ;)

Since the topic of Shadowmarch.net  has been brought up, I would like to point out that my site will vanish in mid-April. So, if there is anything up there that you would like to save, now would be the time to do it. Feel free to copy and re-use any of the original content of my site.

2006 has been a difficult year for me and I do need to make some changes. Letting Shadowmarch.net go is one of the changes. I have been doing the site for almost three years and it has been lots of fun.

I can, however direct you to
Tad Williams Online that is also providing news about Tad's upcoming works.
