Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Shadowmarch Community v2.0

Hi all,

After the catastrophic failure of our web server and the attendant damage to our message board, we've directed some energy towards a possible upgrade.  Basically, now's as good a time as any.

Please post here to offer your thoughts on what works and what doesn't, what you'd like to see and what you wouldn't.  Chime in and let us know your opinions.  If you've got a specific piece of software you'd like us to take a look at, say so here.  We can't promise we will or won't incorporate things just because someone posts, but we promise to take all of your comments into consideration.  Obviously, we'll continue to be guided by practical considerations (low cost and low maintenance are high priority).

With that said, I turn the discussion over to you.

Thanks!

Matt

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

ooh! a wish list!

* a preview post button so you can check stuff before posting it.

* the ability to jump to the last post of a thread by clicking on it in 'active topics'.

* a 'view posts since last visit' link; helpful if you've been gone for awhile.

* a PM counter above the magic mirror link like guthy has.

Yes.  We need a smight/smite button.

And I agree with all of DD's suggestions as well (smartie pants dragon).

Hmmm, how about an Insta-Succinct button that turns endlessly long posts full of quotes (including self quotes), and dissections thereof, into brief 3 line summaries? :)

I'd pay good money for that.  In fact, a LOT of good money.

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

I've recently gone about setting up a board and ended up liking YabbSE and XMB over the rest, invision, phpBB, etc.  I ended up going with XMB, but a new release in Alpha with some very nice features (1.9) so if you do go with 1.8 you'll probably spend time adding hacks to the code etc.  Which is kinda fun to me. :)

I know some of the larger boards offer database conversion services (invision is $85) if you want to try and integrate the old smoldering remains into the new one.  I'd be up for starting from scratch and having the old one archived if it'd make things easier / faster.

Re: Shadowmarch Community v2.0

I would like it if in the fora there would not only be the date of the last post, but also the name of the last poster. That would make it a lot easier to track your own posts.

I'd like to see notice of PMs on the front page of the BB.  Guthy's has it - convenient feature, because I never check mine and sometimes miss PMs for days at a time.

Any particular reason you want the function, Ian?

I think the problem with it is that sometimes people post argumentative or volatile things that cause a reaction, and then if they were to completely delete the post there is no accountability for their words... (of course, they can and usually do edit, but at least that shows that *something* was said)

I'd like that too. Guthy does it, so it is an option with ultimatebbs.

One thing I don't want to see, though. Several BBS systems out there are set up to put up a separate page for each and every post (sometimes appending a tree of the forum to it). I find this a pain. Please no. The ulitimatebbs approach is much better. If I were being picky, I might suggest that I'd like to see it count backwards from the latest post when building a page, rather than forward, but I suspect that would not be easy to do.

John Homes.
