Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. However, please bear in mind that Tad would like this to be a friendly, civil message board, at least in the relations between users. We reserve the right to remove postings, or even ban postings, from anyone who crosses the boundary of reasonable taste. Basically, you can argue vigorously with someone, but watch your language, okay? We have a lot of young readers as well as grown-ups, so please show them some respect.

But the main requirement here is: have fun.

Re: So, so quiet!

*grins* seriously, though, I don't think anyone should feel obliged to comment on every hot topic or refute every stupid statement, nor do I think that this should mean that things get much quieter in general.  Create the topics you want to discuss; make the community that you want to be a part of.

In those cases, I think we should just say, "Eat garnish, pot stickers of evil!"

Well I'm all for it but I find everytime I yell that at people they refuse to make any further eye contact with me. They're all just jealous of my incomprehensible logic powers.

People should feel free to express their opinions. People should express them.

The only thing I've been bothered by here is the occasional attitude of, "Your opinion is stupid, uninformed and therefor you have no right to express it nor will I have anything to do with this discussion while you are doing so". It becomes personal, elitist, and that disturbs me. Opinions are opinions, informed or not.

Yep, I dislike that distinctly.  Have only seen it every now and then, but I've tried to fight it at every turn :)

Re: So, so quiet!

Well yeah but that was at Night!
Man Daytime Mint is horrible and I KNOW there are hidden/invisible folks lurking around...drop in say hi! Now and again. I loved, and now miss, the old days when we could fill an entire mint room in a matter of hours.
I miss my old mint buds, especially those wacky Aussies I haven't heard from in months. I know people are busy but gods...who wasn't willing to blow off projects for quality Mint time? *grin*
But no, ya'll had to go grow up or somesuch.
Come back! The mint can still be fun!!

I think the problem is (at least in my case) that I want to comment on the hot topics, but, as Libbette said, it sometimes becomes too heated for me, or I become too heated, and though I don't have a problem with expressing opinions, people are going to feel the way that they feel and rather than being frustrated I choose not to be.

And I'll also add that recently I find that you can't just express an opinion without several people trying to pick it apart. I know that value of having points and references to back up an argument, but I also find it frustrating when a post is questioned or picked at because of language or because it may not be phrased correctly. I sometimes choose not to because I don't have time to find links that support my position or because I don't have the opportunity to phrase it perfectly. And I've seen people who aren't even taking part in the discussion swoop in to point out the inherent flaws in someone's post and frankly I find that stifling and frustrating.

Re: So, so quiet!

In other words, I get the impression that some people argue just for the sake of argument and not out of a personal opinion or stake in the discussion at hand.

As for the Mint, I'll just say that the Mint stopped doing it for me a long time ago. That's not a slam at anyone, it's just the way it is...

Re: So, so quiet!

How do you argue with an opinion anyway?

"I think this."
"No you don't!"
"I do too!"
"Liar!"

YEAH!  *raises fist*

The only time I really shut up is when I know I'm gonna open a can of whupass on someone and it's the type of person who'll take refuge with the "I'm so persecuted!" bullshit.  I'm a temperamental cantankerous wench, but I don't hold grudges.  Argue with me and I'll still love you in the morning.  Be a crybaby, and I'll write your phone number on fifty bathroom stalls.

No, just kidding.  :)

Really, I respect people who can hold up their end of a discussion, even if it gets heated, and if you don't want to participate for whatever reason, that's fine too.  It just steams me up when people (and I've see this in EVERY forum or mailing list I've ever been in) jump into a discussion and then start whining because it doesn't go the way they want.

I don't want people to feel that they aren't welcome to contribute their opinion. As long as everyone plays fair, let's rock n' roll.

Re: So, so quiet!

well i donīt think that things are alltoo quite (from the amount of new topics generated, just look into the community section). itīs just the absence of a certain board member...

i think the number of "regular" members that join in a few times a week (or daily) has neither increased nor decreased. of course,  itīs not even 50% of the board members who actually post at all...

@ Paragon

please, donīt forget the "u"

or simply Rimmers :)

understandable. the mint, in the beginning, was a great idea (and got even implemented into the story!), so that it was different from the usual chatrooms, which i donīt like at all). but it was never the place for deep thoughts, and that hasnīt changed. a place to hang around and meet the other smarchers, when nothing else is to do. so the mint has no actual function or something like that. i donīt like to hang around in the mint all the time, but now and then it is fun, not to mention the funny typos ;)

and again, itīs the absence of a certain board member...

Re: So, so quiet!

I don't have the time to post much anymore.  I've got just under 4 weeks until my thesis is due, then up to 3 exams in the week after it is due, then a week of getting shitfaced and generally trying to erase the agony of this year from my mind after that so I won't be around much for at least 6 weeks more.  I check in every couple of days, but when I do it's usually only a quick browse.

I've lost all interest in online debates, not only at smarch but everywhere.  It's probably a cross of my general level of apathy when I'm online for enjoyment and also that I have my opinions and I don't feel I should have to hold them up to the light for everyone to examine, pick apart and dismiss with casual disdain.  (I'm not saying it would happen all the time but I've seen it enough times around the traps and learned my lessons).  I just don't feel like I have the energy to join in the discussions around here anymore.

Also, I want to add that while everyone's entitled to their opinion, some opnions will change / affect the way I think about people, whether I want to associate with them and how much respect I have for them.  Not the "strawberry icecream is better than bubblegum" kind of opinions.  I will have as little as possible to do with people who are sexist, or racist, or homophobic, for example.  Those things can all be called opinions, but I'll be damned if I'll put up with hearing about it.

I don't think there are any sexists, racists or homophobes here. The only places I've seen sexist, racist or homophobic opinions expressed is at specialist boards and on newsgroups.

Well, I consider racism to include believing that the lives of citizens of one country are somehow worth more than the lives of citizens of another.

But I was mostly just clarifying a point about opinions, and people's rights to have them.

Was this in one of the War on Terrorism topics? I haven't been participating in them. Too exhuasted.

Basically, yeah.  And it hasn't been said implicitly, but that's the idea that seems to be coming across.  Anyway.  I've stopped responding in those topics.
