Tad Williams' Message Board

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Welcome to the message board for tadwilliams.com. All comments are welcome, whether kudos or brickbats. QM - Necropolis

Welcome to Necropolis.

As a general description, Necropolis Main is like a city. It is a city, minus the commotion, minus the humans, minus anything alive or moving. The lights glow, carkeys are in the cars, in the ignition, as if the people of the town had bee temporarily either evacuated or abducted before they could do anything. All doors are closed, but not locked. Same with the windows. The sky gleams a dark blue, stars sparkle, night reigns and never gives way to morning, as if time had suddenly stopped. Like a city, Necropolis seems to have grown as it was built. It has no center in the regular way. What seems to be it from the oddly sraight orientation and paralell running roads, though, is around at the east end of the city. A tower, marked as a square on the map, whose corners show into east, west, south and north, sits nestled here. From each of those corners runs a road, the west one far into the city, and even to beyond it, off into the wilderness, the others leading out of the city almost instantly. Symmetrical in all aspects is the region around this tower, though the nature of the shops or houses never seems to overlap, just the way they are aligned, almost eeriely. You can, by the way, enter the tower and a staircase will lead you a few stories up, windowless, but the walls are translucent, a feature not visible from the outside, letting you see the silhouette of shapes outside. There are pictures chisled into the stone of the huge tower's base. They are chisled so that their shadows produce the image, not the forms themselves, as if meant to mirror the fact the light here never changes. They are pictures of mid-elements - lightning as a mid-way between fire and air, clouds as a mid-way between air and water, mud ('blank' picture) as a cross of water and earth, and lava as a mixture of earth and fire.

If you exit Necropolis along the north main road and continue to walk along it, after a day's trek through a landscape that continuously continues to get sharper-edged, little rocks scattering the area, jutting out, as if to cut the sky, a vile, martian like landscape, you will reach a crater that reaches maybe 300m into the sky from when you stand at it's foot and is, in diameter ( for it is perfectly round ), 550m across. In the center is a lake, and in the lake's precise center another small crater, still considerably large with 100m diameter, filled with lava.

The east runs into a landscape just as hostile as the North's, but the shapes are smooth, beaten and whipped by a low wind, not too strong nor soft, continuous. After a day's walk you reach a huge rock formation, perfectly circular, unnaturally circular, actually. The wind is so channeled through it that the wind reaches amazing speeds in the disk.

Travel the road southward and you will soon enter a region with more houses, low, windgnawed, if by far not as much as eastwards, all inaccessible. Even if you got into one, it'd do you no good. There is neither something in there, nor air. Instead, there's sand, heaps of it, compactly wedged into each house. The road leads through this village to the beach, where the sun is at home, hint of a radiant sunrise - always there. The glow hugs the horizon like it were slitted and bled, but the above sky's opaque darkness is only pierced by the stars. On the beach, it is as empty as it gets. The waves of the water are stopped like in a timestop, in half crash. Yet you can wade through the water and it will move to pass you.

To the west is the city. There is, on the marketplace, a fountain of steel, waterless, instead, spewing out liquid nitrogen, it acts like water in the metal, though, except for the splashes that touch the outer rim, causing stalagtites of ice to reach out from there as if clawing air. Farther west and outside the city, the world turns lush and moist, much like a jungle, except no tree grows high, they all stay under eight meters height. There is a graveyard of huge bones at the end of the road as it's hardly definable anymore. The bones aren't from an elephant, but something else, not dinosaurian, not draconic, just something. A perfect circle, untouched by the bones, lies bleak in the center of the graveyard, 100m across, framed by perfectly white, curved bones.

Enjoy your stay.

Re: QM - Necropolis

Hey ettelewen. ^_^

For anyone that cares, I was lazy this time around, and copypasted the Necropolis description from the Crimson Feather homepage into here... with a few minor edits. *g* Can't break the tradition of making my QM a place and describing it like I do ;)

Beautiful room, PinkGoth2 dear and nice signatures though you have to look really quickly to see Nokos. If I ever did I never would purposefully ignore you. But now I'm really off, smarch you all later.

Thank you. ^_^

It's kinda fun to roleplay in Necropolis... when you're in danger of your online/offline life and such... heehee. ;) Blame Reykjavik in Iceland. ... No, seriously. I made that description on the laptop for Crimson Feather when I was in Iceland. :D

Aww. Please? *G* It's also nice to read and if you're even remotely gothic you should feel right at home. It's sooo nice and calm... :>

Well, the "the no peoples part might be nice" is the goth bit... *laughing* ;) But hey. The shops are there for you to raid. You're not staying here forever, y'know.
